Margaret Cho Just Still Isn't Funny

Yep:

What's the difference between the Paul Wellstone funeral and a performance by Margaret Cho, comedian?

In parts, the Wellstone funeral was funny.

Pow, zing.

...

Here's Margaret Cho's routine: say something nasty about a conservative. Wait for applause and "woo-woos" from partisan crowd. Make declarative statement about a liberal orthodoxy ("You don't choose to be gay"). Wait for more applause. Repeat. Imagine a less funny, more sour, double whiny Maureen Dowd, and you've got it.

Cho's jokes are all bile-soaked grenades, most too vicious to repeat. But even worse is her timing. The classic joke formation calls for a few beats between setup and joke. The late master Robin Harris was a genius at this: "My friend Tiny needs two tickets when he goes to the zoo" -- beat, beat, beat -- "one to get in, one to get out." With Cho it's like this: "Does the pope look like a transvestite or what?" Pause. Applause and woo-woos. Pause. Pause. Pause. Look around. Wait. Pause. "I mean, what's with that dress he wears?" Woo-woos, applause, etc.

Yep, that's her act. She doesn't tell jokes or make funny observations. She just says something mean, gets applause, says something pro-gay, gets applause.

A while ago a liberal reviewer from Slate, who was a fan of Cho's, admitted as such. Even while trying to claim the woman was funny, she had to admit that actually she wasn't:

The funniest part of a Cho gag is neither the setup nor the punch line, but that in-between moment when the audience is left in suspension, wondering what kind of character will emerge to take over her voice and body.

Ah. So the best part of a Margaret Cho show isn't when she's actually talking or telling jokes. It's when she's got her mouth shut, and you're filled with the tantalizing hope that This joke might actually turn out to be funny.

Then she tells the joke, and the frisson of comedic promise is dashed, dashed and shattered like a ceramic bong dropping to the floor out of Andy Dick's drunkenly-gesticulating hands.

Talk about damning with faint praise. The best part of 95% of movies is the opening credits, when you're filled with anticipation that this might actually be an enjoyable, smartly-made movie. And then the actual movie begins, ruining everthing.

But Margaret Cho is going with what works for her:

With each successive tour, Cho extends the length of these liminal moments, and a viewer new to her comedy will no doubt think, "Jeez, this woman's timing is really off."

If I had her act, I'd extend my periods of absolute silence as well.

I know I'm taking this waaaaay out of context, but you actually wrote "Ah. So," in a post about Margaret Cho.

Pause. Pause. Pause. Look around. Wait. Pause.

RACIST!!!

Remember when Margaret Cho actually attempted stand-up comedy on TV? Yeah I caught five minutes or so of that once. Tripping on acid. I remain scarred to this day.

True story.

I saw her on that MTV comedy show, I think, way back in the early '90s. She did this riff on her mom going to Mongomery Ward. It was okay--off-the-shelf comedy bits, like "My crazy family", "Isn't flying just the pits?", and "Shitting is funny".

To move your act in a worse direction, while bold, seems to be a poor move.

You know that Pope dude's hat is kinda funny lookin' too.

True dat. I also remember MC when she was merely competent at bad comedy. It's one thing to ride your career down the hill as long as you're collecting a regular paycheck, but it takes a special someone to fly down that hill at 200 mph with your hair on fire while simultaneously eating a bowl full of your own feces. This woman is going to GREAT lengths to entertain us, and I don't know whether to look away or stare. What I can assume from history is that she'll probably die at her own hands and leave a note blaming Chimpy McBushHitler for her premature death. You can't work with hate like she does every day and not get some of it on you. It's like asbestos of the soul; it'll eat through you and leave cancer in it's wake.

In South Korea she's known as "Cho-Cho" which is the Korean slang word for what's left after the first flush, when a second flush is needed.

Why be shocked that a left leaning hollywood type is given undue praise and promotion. This is par for the course. The thing is, all the promos in the world don't actually put butts in the seats. I doubt anyone except the demographic of selfhating rich white people dig her schtick. If you were smart, you would go after the stupid leftwing money too.

Just think about it, its like a service industry catering to a small set of dumb people with too much money. Usually radio stations exist to get big audiences, but Air America is now the catered station, where they live off of the money donated by a few rich idiots. Same thing with comedians and NPR, just court jesters for the terminally deluded.

Haven't seen her in ages. Does she still wear the black leather pants that accentuate what appears to be either an incipient beer belly or the internal organ sag resulting from birthing about 12 children?

As far as I can remember, she had one mildly funny bit in her act about her mother being in charge of the gay porn section at her parents' store. I think that was about six years ago.

Listening to her now, it is difficult to conclude anything other than the fact that she is off her meds.

It works for Michael Moore.

I watches several episodes of that tv sit-com she used to do, what was that called, anyway, I thought it was mildly funny, and kind of new, being about an Asian family and all. Must have been before she turned into a deranged moonbat.

Google... all-american girl, that's the name of that sit-com. 1994
And lookee here, also on google, she was in an episode of Red Shoe Diaries. Soft-core porn? Eeeew. I'll bet that caused some of you to lose your lunch.

Here's a quote I copied from imdb by the divine Ms. Cho, illustrating her deep wisdom:

"It is tragic that people who are incarcerated are unable to vote. They are probably the most important voices to listen to because they can tell us what we need to change. Yet they are arbitrarily silenced, as if forfeiting their right to vote punishes them. In truth, it punishes the rest of us because it turns the right into a privilege. Whenever privilege is introduced, there are problems. We cannot afford any more problems."

What a moron. Where's Dick Cheney when we need him?

Posted by: OregonMuse on December 6, 2005 04:42 PM

Huh. Disenfranchisement based on felony status is now "arbitrary"? Thanks for that pearl of wisdom.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
