Real Open Thread/Pimp My BlogBumped so that people's blog-pimping isn't buried under the Atrios parody. Feel free to link to your blog and best recent post. Include a good snippet to draw attention. Shelby Foote passed on this summer (at a grand old age, to be sure). He was the author of the masterful three-volume history of the American Civil War, and he gained fame after appearing in Ken Burns' documentary of that conflict. He had a perfect voice, a voice I could listen to all day long. I'd link to the interview here, but hey -- my poor blog needs the traffic. But since I'm a nice guy and all, here's an hour-long Booknotes interview (alas, you need the crappy RealPlayer to see it): link. Why do I bring this up at all? Because you're all a bunch of culture-free retards who desperately need some literary churchin' up. Posted by: Monty on November 22, 2005 03:32 PM
I was so taken by your inspirational comments on Dana Milbank this morning that I thought I would try my hand with Chris Matthews--birds of a feather, those two, although that's kind of hard on the birds. It's a cheery little holiday post called "Chris Matthews and the nature of evil :" With bombs going off in Tel-Aviv and fires re-igniting in Paris and the United States hamstrung by its own understanding, those "on the other side" will have a word for the urbane westerners who feel their pain, such as Chris Matthews. Evil. And what will he call them then? Posted by: AcademicElephant on November 22, 2005 03:38 PM
Always one to take advantage of such offers... If any of you are the least bit interested in Central Asia news, you should be reading my blog, Registan.net. There's been nothing incredibly fascinating lately unless you're into geopolitics or political intrigue in the region. But, posts on how batshit crazy Turkmenistan is are always worth reading. Ace, You've got to read Uncle Jimbo's Rumsfeld letter on Iraqi Troop Withdrawal. It's pretty damn funny, and right on target. Have a good one today. Posted by: El Capitan on November 22, 2005 03:49 PM
At World Mag Blog, I posted about the author of South Park Conservatives giving Hollywood the secret to boosting their sagging box-office numbers - make more conservative movies. At Two or Three.net, I wrote about Disney trying to play to both sides of the field - marketing Chronicles of Narnia to both secular and Christian audiences. The strategy could bring in millions or it could back fire. I think the film will rival Lord of the Rings in box office success and franchise viability. Posted by: Aaron on November 22, 2005 03:50 PM

Thanks for the opportunuity to link. One of my posts concerns the effect Islamofascism has had on Holland. "From The Australian comes this bleak picture of sic transit gloria Holland. Doomed by a cultural relativism that was only too happy to favor cultures other than its own, and a too easy immigration policy, Holland has limited chances of regaining the sort of society that enabled it to be a European leader. Only the legendary Dutch resiliance offers me any hope that Holland can shine again." Posted by: Pigilito on November 22, 2005 03:59 PM
In the "oldest post" competition, I just threw up a review of NBC's Martian Chronicles miniseries, which I started re-watching on DVD last night. It's more painful than a Tubino comment, but at least I get to drag out and dust off the Rock Hudson jokes from the attic. Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on November 22, 2005 04:08 PM

Dave at Garfield Ridge: Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles stories didn't age as well as some of his other fiction, either -- but if you read them as "fables" rather than as science fiction, they work better. And yes, the TV series was utter horse-hockey; I remember even hating it as a kid. On the other hand, I loved the Saturday-morning Shazam! show, and upon catching a re-run of this laughably-horrible show, I wondered what they hell my mom was putting in my Cheerios to make me think that show was any good. Jack Sparks' profanity-gilded review of the Country Music Association Awards was hilarious. Okay, here we go. Finally, Alison Krauss & Union Station plus Jerry Douglas, the best Dobro player on earth. Great Ed, your fucking monkeys in the booth fucked up her mic. Jesus Christ, pause. Hey Ed!!! You dumbass!!! The most talented performer all night just kicked off her song with a fucked up mic level. Is it that fucking hard? Who's running this show? I'm sorry Alison. I'm sorry you've graced us with your beautiful voice and talent in a genre and industry that appreciates you about as much as the porn industry appreciates a 57 year old grandmother with the clap. You deserve better than Ed and his minions of evil. You've played in bombed out shit-holes, just this side of Branson, Missouri where there was barely more than one outlet, and yet your mic was on when you started singing. Guess what? You just launched into a song on the stage of Madison Square Garden and that wasn't the case. How long, oh Lord, how long? Posted by: Les Jones on November 22, 2005 04:50 PM

I don't have a blog, but I'll put in a plug for "noted blog personality" Jack Michaels' brand new blog from Hawaii at Letters from Desolation Row, where Laura, skinbad, sobek, civetta, Retired Geezer, jayne and I are currently about 95% of the commenters. I'm told that Jack formerly blogged at the now-defunct All Around the Blogtower (discontinued when he moved to Hawaii), where Laura's infamous drunken poem was originally published. Jack is sponsoring a war against Iceland (it has to do with Bobby Fisher), and Marlboro Lights are the official cigarette of this blog, due to a paid endorsement by me. Seriously. You can buy an endorsement too. $50 for 50 words, but rates are likely to rise when Jack starts to actually get some traffic. If you piss Jack off, he will threaten to use Bill Ardolino as a guest blogger to punish you. Need I say more? Posted by: Michael on November 22, 2005 07:04 PM
Since I already got my monthly Acealanche for my World's Ugliest Dog post, I'll second Michael's recommendation for Jack's blog. Don't miss Ask Jack Thursday. Wuzzadem has his usual, funny post up also. RG Posted by: Retired Geezer on November 22, 2005 07:18 PM

opps...posted on wrong thread: I read that Redstate got an email from Chris Matthews http://www.redstate.org/story/2005/11/22/184622/30 He says the reporter mis-represented his speech or to quote his email "I told the students that my way to deal with terrorists was to do what Golda Meir did after the killing of Israeli athletes at the Olympics: track them down and kill them one by one and be rough about it. I don't know why the reporter chose to ignore my clear statement was the appropriate response to terorism, why he chose to skip to my strong belief that we need to get behind this massive hatred we're facing in the Muslim world." Hmmm, he seems to have a few typos in it. Anyway; as one of the comments noted, "Matthews gets his words twisted by the MSM? Oh, sweet poetic justice." lostinspace Posted by: lostinspace on November 22, 2005 08:34 PM

"I support the troops," said Y reflexively, "but....they enlisted knowing what they were getting into in Iraq so if something happens to them, well..." And so began my conversation with Y. Read more of my adventure into Blue State America where I was surrounded by those that "Support the troops...but.." http://opinionator.blogs.com/the_opinionator/2005/11/i_support_the_t_1.html Posted by: The Opinionator on November 22, 2005 10:02 PM
(Moonbat-length post follows; apologies. I was going to post this on my own blog, but...meh. I'll post it here.) Writing about Shelby Foote coincided with something I read earlier about how the support for the Iraq war is waning as the American casualty numbers rise. Right now, we have about 150,000 troops deployed in Iraq. Since the 2003 invasion, we have suffered about 2100 killed and perhaps four times that many wounded. By any historical measure (especially considering the type of combat), this is an amazingly low number. Shelby Foot once noted that a battle in which 10% of the troops engaged were casualties would be considered a bloodbath; however in the Civil War it was not uncommon for battles to result in casualties of 20 to 30% of total forces engaged. And that was in battle after battle. In the Battle of Gettysburg, approximately 150,000 troops were engaged (North and South). Over three days of hard fighting, between 7,000 and 10,000 young men were killed, and another 40,000 wounded. Think about that before you nod and move on: 50,000 casualties. 23,000 Union men, and 28,000 Confederate men. When the Confederates disengaged and retreated back to Virginia, the wagon-train of wounded stretched for seventeen miles. And this awful toll was only the worst: other battles were nearly as bad. Antietam, Shiloh, The Wilderness, Fredericksburg, and others resulted in casualties of between 20,000 and 25,000. And yet...the country endured. We are not weaker than the people who lived then. We must be able to tell the ghosts of our falled soldiers that they did not die in vain; that their sacrifice helped to bring us to victory. If we are going to ask our soldiers to go into battle and perhaps give their own lives in service to our political will, then we owe them clarity of purpose and moral vision. Posted by: Monty on November 22, 2005 10:11 PM
Falled = fallen. Fat fingers. Posted by: Monty on November 22, 2005 10:13 PM
We are not weaker than the people who lived then. Monty, we are physically stronger than those Americans were; healthier, with better food and water, and with far advanced medicine. Our bodies are not torn down as easily by illness or exertion. Would that such also benefitted our character. But unfortunately there seems to be an inverse relationship. True inner strength, grit and determination...let's just say that easy living is hard on the spine. I'm not saying that Americans are fat and complacent. I'm just saying we ain't what we used to be. Posted by: lauraw on November 22, 2005 11:57 PM
Good comment, Monty. I've been to many of those Civil War sites when I lived in the D.C. area, and wondered at the horrible carnage and awesome heroism that was displayed on that sacred ground. So much has already been given for us. And moral clarity is exactly what we owe to those who gave it. Posted by: Michael on November 23, 2005 12:00 AM
