The Right MedicinePresident Bush gave a speech today, Veteran’s Day, at a Pennsylvania Army Communications center, signaling a switch to offense: President Bush forcefully attacked critics of the war in Iraq on Friday, accusing them of trying to rewrite history and saying they are undercutting American forces on the front lines. This is, hopefully, just a start. For too long, the President’s been absent from the debate. Maybe he thought it was over. After all, it’s been a couple years now. But, of course, anyone watching the news knows it's never stopped. The left has continually criticized the U.S. presence in Iraq, undermined the effort and move to build Iraqi democracy because success there would mean they were wrong. The moments of triumph, purple fingers and Constitutions, have shamed them into semi-silence only momentarily. They won’t stop. And neither should Bush. Time will tell if this speech was just a one off job. It shouldn’t be. The loony-left needs be combated like the viral infection it is. One time shots won’t permanently suppress it. A steady course of antibiotics, continued long past the point its fever seems broken, is the only prescription. Bush must follow up on this speech. posted by Dr. Reo Symes at 02:03 PM
CommentsHaving planted my tinfoil hat firmly upon my noggin, I will advance the following conspiracy theory: The Dems went on attack mode against Libby and Rove last month in preparation for the recent elections. They probably coordinated the bullshit legal attacks on Tom Delay, knowing that Frist is not the leader that Delay is. Although the recent elections themselves were forgone conclusions for the Dems, the Dems got some momentum there. The Delay/Libby/Rove travails plus the Dem wins in the elections, combined with RINO assholery in the House, has distracted the White House and caused it to pull back like a turtle pulling into its shell. W. doesn't like the press, and he doesn't like having to justify himself to the press. (Note that he doesn't dislike people; he correctly judges that "the press" and "the people" barely coincide these days.) He may have just been laying low and wating for the storm to pass. But this inactivity has exercised his base, who were already cranky from the Miers debacle; conservatives are in no mood to brook continued shenanigans from the Left. The Dems played a beautiful hand in the last couple of months, beginning with the spin on Katrina. They've had the Republicans on the ropes both politically and in a P.R. sense. Bush needs to push back not just on Iraq, but also on the domestic front. He needs to get some party discipline going in both the House and the Senate, and to start getting the economic message out. And since I have said this, it must be true. Posted by: Monty on November 11, 2005 02:14 PM
Monty makes a good point - the conservative base is made - they want Bush to fight back - the corollary is that Bush cannot do it alone - now that the base is energized, it needs to focus outwards and hit back hard. The Dems have controlled the agenda for the last few months - time to take it away. Posted by: holdfast on November 11, 2005 02:25 PM
Monty, you said it. Posted by: Uncle Jefe on November 11, 2005 02:26 PM
just saw Jim Sasser on Fox peddling the same "we wuz mislead" crap. remember how funny he sounded when he talked about the "dafficit"? Posted by: Dave in Texas on November 11, 2005 02:43 PM
One off. Bush couldn't sell free Viagra to old men in nursing homes on a field trip to a whore house. He's let me down more than he's impressed me, and I just don't think fighting back now is going to help one bit. The lies have already been packaged, sold, and carved into stone as truth now. Had he been doing this from the start, then we'd be in better shape, I think. Posted by: Sharp as a Marble on November 11, 2005 02:49 PM
I agree with Monty. Getting rid of Delay, Newt, Barr and Rogan-all of the ones who did not even think of pulling Rino McCain moves, has been a long plan, but worth it-to the dems. What we are left with are spineless less than Rinos who actually think they will get reelected. We need a completely new set of real Repubs. Although I have been angry with Bush for not saying anything, it is understandable. It's not like he could count on any of the Senate or House member to have his back-more like he could count on them to stab him in the back. Posted by: someone on November 11, 2005 03:03 PM

The only way democrats can excuse the fact that they also supported the war and exploit for maximum effect the unpopularity of the war is to continue to use this "we were misled" crap. Now that they have established the misconception that we were misled and that the WMD threat was all a lie, the democrats enmasse will soon start advocating the immediate withdrawal from Iraq and this will be their major issue in upcoming elections. Once again as they did during the Watergate scandal, the Democrats will betray our allies and the national interest to take advantage of the unpopularity of a war for short term political gain. Democrats will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory Posted by: john brown on November 11, 2005 03:23 PM
Same old speech. Bush is still misleading: ``More than 100 Democrats in the House and Senate who had access to the same intelligence voted to remove Saddam Hussein from power,'' the president said. Except, of course, that the IWR vote was NOT to remove Saddam Hussein from power. Bush Bush: But I am very firm in my desire to make sure that Saddam is disarmed. Hopefully, we can do this peacefully. The use of the military is my last choice, is my last desire. More examples here. So the disarming part started with the UN inspectors – and they weren’t allowed to finish their jobs. You thought I was going to take exception to the "same intelligence" part? Well, that's BS too. Hadley was ripped on it yesterday, today Bush gets his lumps. If you want to understand why this NIE was so, uh SPECIAL, read Jane Hamsher on it. Bush lied two years ago, and he's still lying today. More glimpses of truth from the MSM. This is from a Knight-Ridder story on Bush's speech (if you read down far enough): Before the war, the President and his aides contended Hussein was concealing nuclear, biological and chemical warfare programs in violation of a U.N. ban. None have ever been found. Posted by: tubino on November 12, 2005 03:56 PM

Oh no! Hamas' de facto press agent at the UN complains that she can't use her credit cards or rent a card now that she's been sanctioned as a terrorist operative
Why does this keep happening to members of the "political organization" (per Tucker Carlson) of Hamas?!?!
Tucker Carlson claims that it's weird that Ted Cruz is interested in the massacre of Christians by Nigerian Muslims, because he has "no track record of being interested in Christians," then blows off the massacre of Christians by Nigerian Muslims, saying it might or might not be a real concern
Tucker Carlson enjoys using the left-wing tactic of "Tactical Ignorance" to avoid taking positions on topics. Is Hamas really a terrorist organization? Tucker can't say. He hasn't looked into it enough, but "it seems like a political organization to me." Are Muslims slaughtering Christians in Nigeria? Again, Tucker just doesn't know. He hasn't examined the evidence yet. He knows every Palestinian Christian who said he was blocked from visiting holy sites in Bethlehem, but he just hasn't had the time to look into the mass slaughter of Christians in Nigeria that has been going on since (checks watch) 2009. He doesn't know, so he can't offer an opinion. Wouldn't be prudent, you know? Don't rush him! He'll sift through the evidence at some point in the future and render an opinion sometime around 2044. Of course, if you need an opinion on Jewish Perfidy, he has all the facts at his fingertips and can give you a fully informed opinion pronto. Say, have you ever heard of the USS Liberty incident...? You'd think that the main issue for Tucker Carlson, who pretends to be so deeply concerned about Palestinian Christians being bullied by Jews in Israel (supposedly), would be the massacre of 185,000 Christians in Nigeria itself. But no, his main problem is that Ted Cruz is talking about it, "who has no track record of being interested in Christians at all." And then he just shrugs as to whether this is even a real issue or not. Whatever we do we must never "divide the right," huh? Tucker is attacking Ted Cruz for bringing the issue up because he's acting as an apologist for Jihadism, and he can't cleanly admit that Jihadists are killing any Christians, anywhere. There is no daylight between him and CAIR at this point. One might conclude that Tucker Carlson himself isn't interested in the plight of Christians -- except as they can be used as a cudgel to attack Jews. Just gonna ask an Interesting Question myself -- why is it that Tucker Carlson's arguments all track with those shit out by Qatarian propaganda agents and the far left? That if Jews crush an ant underfoot it is worldwide news, but when Muslims slaughter Christians it elicits not even a vigorous shrug?
Garth Merenghi is interviewed by the only man who can fathom his ineffable brilliance -- Garth Merenghi
From the comments: I once glimpsed Garth in the penumbra betwixt my wake and sleep. He was in my dream, standing afar, not looking my way, nor did he acknowledge me. But I felt seen. And that's when I knew I was a traveler on the right path. I'm glad he's still with us. Now that's some Merenghian prose. Garth Merenghi on the writer's craft Greetings, Traveler. If you still have not experienced Garth Merenghi -- Author, Dream-weaver, Visionary, plus Actor -- the six episodes of his Darkplace are still available on YouTube and supposedly upscaled to HD. (Viewing it now, it doesn't appeared upscaled for shit.) I think the second episode, "Hell Hath Fury," is the best by a good margin. Try to at least watch through to that one. It's Mereghi's incisive but nuanced take on sexism.
Update on Scott Adams:
Scott Adams had approval for this cancer drug but they hadn't scheduled him to get it. He was taking a turn for the worse. Trump had told him to call if he needed anything, so he did. Talked to Don Jr (who is in Africa) , then RFK Jr, then Dr Oz. Someone talked to Kaiser and he was scheduled. Shouldn't have needed it but he did and he says it saved his life.

Schmoll: 53% of New Jersey likely voters say their neighbors are voting for Ciattarelli, while 47% say the cheater/grifter Mikie Sherrill
The "who do you think your neighbors are voting for" question is designed to avoid the Shy Tory problem, wherein conservative people lie to schmollsters because they don't want to go on record with a likely left-winger telling them who they're really voting for. So instead the question is who do you think your neighbors are voting for, so people can talk about who they themselves support without actually having to admit it to a left-wing rando stranger recording their answers on the phone.

Interesting football history: How the forward pass was created in response to the nineteen -- 19! -- people killed playing football in 1905 alone
The original rules of football did not allow forward passes. The ball was primarily advanced by running, with blockers forming lines with interlocked arms and just smashing into the similarly-interlocked defensive lines. It was basically Greek hoplite spear formations but with a semi-spherical ball. As calls to ban the sport entirely grew, some looked for ways to de-emphasize mass charges as the primary means of advancing the ball, and some specifically championed allowing a passer to throw the ball forward.
