Oliver Reed plays General Graziani who Mussolini (Rod Steiger) sends to Lybia to put down an Arab rebellion led by Anthony Quinn. Khadaffi funded it, so there was a lot of money for detailed Italian armored cars and proto-tanks and a cast of thousands for huge battle scenes. Great stuff, although long and preachy. Still, can't beat armored columns having it out with Arab nomads. A shame about Akkad, who directed the movie, too.
