Peter Jennings Dead At 67

Lung cancer.

Guess they're not kidding about smoking. Something to bear in mind.

Seems shocking that he would be gone so quickly after his diagnosis just four months ago.

His voice was pretty raspy on that last TV appearance, though, and I remember reading that was an indication that his cancer probably was pretty advanced.

And from what I'm seeing on the web tonight it sounds like 3-6 mos from diagnosis is common.

I had never realized lung cancer killed so quickly.

Posted by: Ted on August 8, 2005 01:21 AM

Well, he quit like 20 years ago. I read before that by 10 years after quitting smoking your chances of getting lung cancer were almost "normal".

Posted by: Dave S on August 8, 2005 01:27 AM

He started up again after 9/11. I've read also that he had smoked unfiltered cigarettes, too.

Posted by: Ted on August 8, 2005 01:29 AM

Ahh, here is a timeline.

Did he actually start again after 9/11? Or did he just smoke "over 9/11" or however he put it?

Dave

Posted by: on August 8, 2005 01:39 AM

I had just heard that he started up again. I assumed it meant he didn't quit a second time.

Posted by: Ted on August 8, 2005 01:46 AM

Lung cancer has a pretty high death rate. I think most people are dead within 5 years of diagnosis. And by most, I think that means >90%.

Posted by: meep on August 8, 2005 06:27 AM

Trying to get away from all the endless Jennings tribute bullshit this morning. That crazy old bugger Imus is on MSNBC, muttering darkly to his desk about injecting a "more lethal form of mercury than is found in fish" into human babies, and how if you do that then, well, "something's gotta happen."

I don't have much to do right now so I'm drawing up a warrant for his arrest.

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 08:43 AM

Yeah, Megan, I was surprised by the extent and manner of the coverage this morning, too. I was wearing out the presets on my radio trying to find other news. I mean, yes, he was a public figure and it was a bit of a surprise, but it's not like he was a head of state or Elvis or anything. Then it dawned on me: I was listening to newsreaders discussing the death of a newsreader. Oh.

Posted by: S. Weasel on August 8, 2005 08:49 AM

Y'all nailed it there, SW. Unfortunately, I suspect we'll be hearing about this for a while, maybe the whole damn week.

I'm not rejoicing in Jennings' death or any of that shit - I just didn't like him, didn't respect his sloppy, unprofessional work, and I don't particularly give a damn that he's dead. I'm not going to pretend I'm sorry or all broken up about it.

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 08:54 AM

Fox is back on the War on Terror, thank goodness.

Wayne Simmons, former CIA op saying all the right things. "Life as this guy [Haroon Aswat, recently captured terrorist] knows it is OVER. We need to use drugs on him, subject him to the harshest conditions, DRAIN him, get every bit of information we can out of him, 'cause this is time-sensitive intel."

EDH: "But we can't. People cry foul."

WS: "Then we move him to a country where we can."

:)

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 08:57 AM

My last memory of Jennings was his statement that he had grown bored with the coverage of Reagan's death and was wanting to move on to something else. This while there were still 100,000 people in line.

Posted by: OCBill on August 8, 2005 09:07 AM

Yeah, I remember that. Caused some disconcertment even in the Washington Post, I recall, comparing the funeral of a President to the escape attempt of a murderer:

"I'm more inclined to spare coverage - come on and do something meaningful, then get away. The last time I had to do this was with OJ Simpson, and I had nothing to say after a certain period of time."

So let's give his death "spare coverage" as well, hmm? I don't think I have anything more to say - call it the 10th hour in the Bronco.

Wouldn't want to bother the dead with another "temper tantrum," after all.

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 09:30 AM

"Temper tantrum." Ugh. That's when I stopped watching Jennings.

Wait, actually I never started watching Jennings. I was always put off by the fact that he always seemed like a snob. Love how the press is now calling that "urbane."

Sorry, shouldn't speak ill of the dead, I guess.

Posted by: Slublog on August 8, 2005 09:49 AM

Meh, I've always found that a silly thing to say. I liked the second half of that Voltaire line: "On ne doit aux morts que la verite." (One owes the dead only truth.)

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 09:57 AM

if you owe him any money and he dies, bonus!

Posted by: Dave in Texas on August 8, 2005 10:02 AM

Oh please, when was the last time Peter Jennings would have WON a bet on politics?

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 10:04 AM

Uh, Ace, try not to die from this stuff.

Posted by: someone on August 8, 2005 10:04 AM

Well, if you do, Ace, at least try to check out before 67. I mean really, that just means you're not smoking enough. Whatever happened to leaving a beautiful corpse?

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 10:14 AM

Hey, awesome. Jeanine Pirro's chances against Hillary being discussed by Tammy Bruce, as well as a couple of other people, on FNC.

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 10:23 AM

Ace:

I hate to thread-jack, but Rosie's back in business! Ex-uh-lunt!

Posted by: Monty on August 8, 2005 10:24 AM

...and more on-topic, some kinds of cancer are like wildfire. My mom was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in November of 2003; she died the following January, one month shy of her sixtieth birthday.

Posted by: Monty on August 8, 2005 10:25 AM

Check out Pirro's book, btw - it's subtitled "A DA's Fight Against a System that Coddles Criminals," and the first chapter is called "Cage the Bastards."

Fucking awesome girl there. Quite pretty, too.

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 10:26 AM

Leave it to the New York Times to turn a casting decision into a breakthrough for gay rights.

Personally, I think it's pretty good casting, as long as Rosie doesn't start using her "Beth" voice.

Posted by: Slublog on August 8, 2005 10:27 AM

Lung cancer may the official cause of death, but we know it was really (BDS) Bush Derangement Syndrome. Too bad. I would have preferred he remain alive and fully conscious of the undoing of the moonbat culture he and his kind almost succeeded in inflicting on us.

Posted by: erp on August 8, 2005 10:28 AM

Tammy Bruce got in a good dig at some jerk called Jim Warren who took a shot at her right off the bat, before anyone else had said anything - comparing Pirro's chances against Hillary to Tammy's chances at being selected for a NASA Mars mission. Silly ass. He went on to the usual "Hillary has all the advantages of incumbency" thing.

Tammy just smiled coolly and waited for him to finish, then remarked, "You might want to ask Senator Clinton's husband about the chances of a relative unknown against an incumbent, Jim."

Slap.

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 10:30 AM

Monty, yeah. Colorectal cancer is a bad one. My grandmother was diagnosed with it just before Memorial Day last year, and she died November 4.

Posted by: Slublog on August 8, 2005 10:30 AM

Benon Sevan being harassed on the street by a Fox reporter. :) Good stuff.

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 10:34 AM

ACE - Studies have found that the risks of lung disease goes up enormously as the "pack-years" exceed 20 pack-years, i.e., one pack a day for 20 years, or 2 packs a day for ten years, or 3 a day for 6.6 years etc. So bear this in mind.

I've heard it takes 7-10 years from quitting until you're probably safe from lung diease. I only quit three years ago so I won't be out of the woods for another 4-7 years!

PS - Next to getting sober, quitting smoking was the best thing I've ever done. I feel so much better in so many ways that I can't put it into words, and it actually isn't that hard to do, when you're ready. So go for it, you'll be damn glad you did!

Posted by: 72 VIRGINS on August 8, 2005 10:41 AM

That is a great clip.

Now can we get some footage of Sevan being perpwalked into a federal holding center? Please? Is that too much to ask?

Posted by: Slublog on August 8, 2005 10:42 AM

Just saw the Sevan bit on Fox and thought it was idiotic. Just a bit of "gotcha" stuff that doesn't do anything. If there's an investigation, why would any one comment. That's what the president did with Rove -- can't talk, while they're investigating sorta stuff.
Sad to hear about Jennings, but the media will be on it for a while. They typically over cover the death of a fellow newsman. Jennings did do a lot of good stuff and got a first hand look at a lot of history in the making.

Posted by: Gsburgess on August 8, 2005 10:46 AM

"Just saw the Sevan bit on Fox and thought it was idiotic"

Bah. Don't begrudge us these small pleasures when they're pretty much the only scraps we get these days. No one's throwing those bastards behind bars yet, but at least we can watch them being made to look silly.

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 10:48 AM

"I'm more inclined to spare coverage - come on and do something meaningful, then get away. The last time I had to do this was with OJ Simpson, and I had nothing to say after a certain period of time."

LOL! Anyone remember why Peter had such sour memories of the O.J. Simpson Bronco chase?

I do. ROFL!

Posted by: Sue Dohnim on August 8, 2005 10:59 AM

I'm sure his family will miss him and the MSM but as for me..... Nah. I won't miss the journalistic terroism he imposed on his evening fictional news show. He was an Anti American, military hating Canadian.

Posted by: Bill on August 8, 2005 10:59 AM

Heh, I'd never heard about that one, Sue. Thanks for the link. :)

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 11:05 AM

I never cared for Jennings as a newscaster, but lung cancer is a nasty way to go. Me, I smoke like a chimney, and every time I get a sniffle I figure I've got six months to live.

Posted by: utron on August 8, 2005 11:19 AM

Tried smoking once myself in high school. Didn't take. I took one big puff and a few seconds later, I was leaning against a tree, retching, and the cigarette was on the ground.

The guy next to me was concerned. His question? "Hey, buddy, you gonna smoke that?"

When I said no, he picked it up and finished it for me.

Posted by: Slublog on August 8, 2005 11:23 AM

that small-cell lung c. is some mean shit, and it's fast too.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on August 8, 2005 11:23 AM

Totally o/t, but too stupid not to be true: NRO notes that in a new movie about the Nixon era, Meryl Streep will play the role of Martha Mitchell. Helen Thomas, naturally, will be played by Annette Behning. Presumably Nixon will be played by Colin Farrell.

Posted by: utron on August 8, 2005 11:40 AM

Cancer fucking sucks. :(

Posted by: fat kid on August 8, 2005 12:04 PM

Totally and completely off topic...If I could go back in time and kick the crap out of one person, it would have to be the person that invented the voicemail menu.

The programs don't work, by the way, when you use profanity instead of saying 'yes' or 'no.'

OT-Interesting info over at CQ Blog pertaining to the nuke Mecca discussion.

Posted by: TheDude on August 8, 2005 01:24 PM

Meh. The whole point to nuking Mecca would be to destroy the Kaaba, not necessarily the city itself. Mecca proper is a bonus.

Posted by: Megan on August 8, 2005 01:31 PM

Wow. Fox just had a brief spot with the author of this book. Carrie took 20 bullets and lost her husband while trying to help the Iraqis. Asked what she thought of the Iraqi people now, who had cost her what most people would consider pretty much fucking everything, and if she'd ever go back, she said (paraphrasing from memory):

"The Iraqis were very welcoming people, very friendly to us, and they were eager to receive the help they needed, the help we were there to give them. I'm going to stay faithful to God's plans for me. If He wants me to go back and help the Iraqis again, I will."

Wow. Just... wow.

Tell me again how "all religious fundamentalism" is evil. Tell me again how ISLAM is the religion of peace. Moslems come to the West, steal, murder, rape, and live off our foolish largesse until they're ready to blow themselves up in the middle of a daycare center.

Christians go to the Middle East and give everything they have until they get shot. And then they wait until they're healed, and they get ready to do it all over again.

People like this lady can make even someone as arrogant as me feel incredibly small.

Smoking has negative synergistic effects with the following:

Trans fats (hydrogenated oils)
Homogonized milk
Corn syrup

In other words, if you smoke, avoid all of them (shop at Whole Foods, Wild Oats).

Eating fruit and foods rich is sulpher (eggs) and taking vitamins will help mitigate the negative effects of smoking.

Before there were alternatives, (FOX) I'd watch Jennings. Of the big three he seemed the most mature, and had the best voice.
And while no doubt a lib, he chose to become an American when it would have been PC to stay Canukian. If the truth can filter through to a person like him, there's hope.

Posted by: Iblis on August 8, 2005 02:25 PM

Jennings specifically said there was no political context to his gaining dual-citizenship (Canada/USA). He said he did it for his kids.

He also once said he'd let American soldiers be killed right in front of him if he thought he could get the story. The link. Scroll down, starts in paragraph nine or so.

Posted by: OCBill on August 8, 2005 04:38 PM

With the previous post in mind, as well as others, I will only think of him as another enemy propagandist who deserves no sympathy.

Posted by: Improbulus Maximus on August 8, 2005 07:00 PM

Okay, this morning I thought people were being a little harsh when they said the media shd stfu already about Jennings. Now, I can personally say, the media shd. stfu already about Jennings.

Besides being a liberal asshat who skewed the news, what's the big deal about these talking heads? They are like these fucking Hollywood moonbats talking about actors -- "oh so and so, he's a genius." No they're not. And no he's not.

Posted by: on August 8, 2005 08:06 PM

Gee, another Conservative blog commenting on the Jennings death with more prick comments.

Try to practice the religion you are always pushing, fuckers.

Posted by: Shawn on August 8, 2005 11:28 PM

What religion is that, Shawn?

We'd like to hear your oh-so-deep thoughts on the subject.

Sorry about that. I did two things: 1, I bought into something, a conspiracy theory really, because it was new and exciting. I remember being similarly swindled by self-declared "experts" babbling about "chromatic aberrations." The Short Unhappy Life of a Russian Soldier: Why recruits die in 20-30 minutes
Interesting video. Some key parts: drones were responsible for 70-80% of all battlefield deaths in mid-2025, and I bet it's higher now. The Russian army is incredibly corrupt. Men get assigned to the most dangerous frontline units, the "Storm" units, unless they pay a superior $2,000 to be assigned to a different unit. Furthermore, there is often no real training for recruits -- commanders pocket the money that would have gone towards fuel and ammo costs incurred during training. Much "training" consists just of taking a single picture of soldiers doing something soldier-y, like fording a river, and publishing that as proof that the training was done. Even when it is done, training is only two weeks long.
