American Dialect QuizI had a policy against linking these quizzes, I know, but I've come across two in as many days that I liked. In a way, I guess it's pretty useless, since most of us have a good idea of which region of the country we come from, and therefore which regional dialects we speak in; but then, all of these quizzes are like that. People just like answering questions about themselves and then having a bit of computer-code parrot back to them what they've just told the quiz. I know I do. posted by Ace at 11:50 AM
CommentsPooter. I just felt like saying that. It's kinda simmilar to saying "Monkey" in terms of the sheer pleasure of it... Posted by: Grendel on April 21, 2005 12:06 PM
Your Linguistic Profile: That's actually pretty good, I'm surprised. Posted by: 72VIRGINS on April 21, 2005 12:06 PM
Surprisingly accurate, as far as it goes. 30% Yankee, 5% Upper Midwestern, 5% Dixie Grew up a Yankee, went to school in the upper midwest and now live in Dixie. However, it doesn't go to a fine enough grain. I can hear the difference in New York and Boston Accents. (And avoid both, since I grew up between them.) Unfortunately, Yankee does not include both those accents. My guess is that the author of the test doesn't know the difference, and is lumping them together. Posted by: Jim on April 21, 2005 12:06 PM
Peter Pooter. I just felt like saying that. Posted by: 72NAZIS on April 21, 2005 12:07 PM
Peter's Pooter picked a peck of pickled peppers. Posted by: 72 raisins on April 21, 2005 12:08 PM
Your Linguistic Profile: Pretty much right. Huh. Posted by: Dianna on April 21, 2005 12:10 PM

40% Yankee, 35 % General American, 15% Dixie. Doesn't really sound like me. I also learned that I'm 60% normal, my inner age is 26, and my inner personality disorder is schizo. When the quizbot told me my inner European was Dutch, I got disgusted and threw one of my wooden shoes at the monitor. Posted by: utron on April 21, 2005 12:13 PM
70% general, 25% Dixie Its not pop or soda, its coke....its all coke Posted by: johnny on April 21, 2005 12:18 PM
I think pickled pooters is funnier. They should make 'pooter' part of the quiz. I doubt it's universal. Posted by: compos mentis on April 21, 2005 12:29 PM
NOT ANOTHER FAILED QUIZ!!!! Augghhhh 55% General English, 20% Yankee, 15% Midwestern, 5% Dixie, 5% Upper Midwestern Yeah, except I grew up in Michigan until after high school. Never even been to teh NE (Yankee) areas. Lived in teh South for 7 years Yeah, that shit is EXACTLY right. bullshit. my self-identity is really taking a beating with these quizzes ace. I'm crying here. Posted by: hobgoblin on April 21, 2005 12:42 PM
Its not a water fountain or a drinking fountain. Its a bubbler! Posted by: BrewFan on April 21, 2005 01:19 PM
Your a fucking "bubbler," Brewski. WTF? Posted by: hobgoblin on April 21, 2005 01:24 PM
Dead on I'd say Your Linguistic Profile: It didn't have to one critical question to distinguish an ordinary upstate NY denizen from those NYC troglodites though - how to you pronounce the name of that porcelain thing in the bathroom? Upstate (the rest of the world): toy-let Posted by: on April 21, 2005 01:32 PM
And we like happy music too! Posted by: BrewFan on April 21, 2005 01:32 PM
Their quiz lifts about 20 questions from the 122 in the Harvard Dialect Survey (which is apparently no longer at Harvard: http://cfprod01.imt.uwm.edu/Dept/FLL/linguistics/dialect/maps.html ). They also picked a bunch of questions that don't really show much regional variation. Here are the results for "Do you use the word cruller?": http://cfprod01.imt.uwm.edu/Dept/FLL/linguistics/dialect/staticmaps/q_86.html Do you see a regional pattern there? Posted by: Dave on April 21, 2005 01:51 PM
Being from the south (originally from Arkansas), I call everything a "Coke". Of course, every "soda" vending machine is, by extension, a Coke machine. So I presume to be unqualified to take the little quiz. Posted by: Dave S on April 21, 2005 02:14 PM
Right on, Johnny. It's all coke...the conversation goes like this: Q: You want something to drink? Posted by: WindRider95 on April 21, 2005 02:35 PM
Your Linguistic Profile: That's pretty accurate. My parents were from Alabama and Texas via Louisiana, but I spent most of my childhood overseas in various military bases, with kids from all over the U.S. The result is I have a rather generic American accent, and use a few southern words and phrases. People from the north claim I have a southern accent, people from the south claim I have a northern accent. Posted by: Tom on April 21, 2005 02:36 PM

The benchmark against the queens english : 65% General American English I'm from the UK, and although there were a couple of questions that I couldn't answer properly (it's a shopping trolley, and it's a soft drink, not pop or soda), here's my score.

Delphi guy Dear, dear, no standard RC? What is Briton headed for? Posted by: 72 raisins on April 21, 2005 03:05 PM
Meant to say: Dear, dear, no standard RP? What is Briton headed for? Posted by: 72 raisins on April 21, 2005 03:07 PM
Standard RP? Posted by: DelphiGuy on April 21, 2005 03:12 PM
Yeah, as in "Received Pronunciation" to wit: Throughout the last century and throughout the early part of this century, Received Pronunciation (RP) was very much the language of the ruling and educated classes. Posted by: 72 v& w on April 21, 2005 03:51 PM
...and I believe that the country is referred to as "Britain" no matter which US regional accent you spell it in. Unless you really are referring to a citizen of Britain, in which case I believe that they are called "Britainians"

In response to someone asking why the video tape doesn't show Tyler Robinson's face (PS, it does, but it's crappy video so it's blurry):
Candace OwensFor such an "open and shut case" they have thus far provided ZERO evidence of anything outside of a criminal government conspiracy, the likes of which hasn't been seen since the JFK assassination.
