Feinstein: No FilibusterA double victory. One, we get Alito, two, the Democratic crazy-base gets further incensed at the Democrats. Disheartened by the administration's success with the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr., Democratic leaders say that President Bush is putting an enduring conservative ideological imprint on the nation's judiciary, and that they see little hope of holding off the tide without winning back control of the Senate or the White House. I'd give it a solid B+. posted by Ace at 05:15 PM
CommentsYeah! And the OTHER big plus is now we've got a guy on the bench who will support a unitary presidency and executive privilege that puts BUSH, and any other Republican president ABOVE THE LAW! This is great! He can spy on us, spend money without oversight, lie about having warrants, use his powers to spy on his political opponents, pardon all his criminal friends, and there's not a damn thing any of us can do about it! To hell with limited govt, and checks and balances! Now that we're in power, let's abuse the hell out of it! Woo hoo! Watch the dems go crazy as we destroy the foundation of this country and make it one-party FOREVER! Posted by: rightarded tubino on January 15, 2006 05:21 PM
The logic of the minority party determining what is out of step with the country seems, well, illogical. I guess it goes hand in hand with the belief that if they lose an election that's proof the fix was in. Posted by: tommy on January 15, 2006 05:25 PM

Alito getting confirmed while the dem senators make jackasses of themselves is great. But here's hoping that Stevens' or Ginsburg's seat becomes vacant before the end of 2008. There really needs to be one more appointment to reshape the court. Posted by: Log Cabin on January 15, 2006 05:34 PM
Faced with the choice of Richard Nixon and a democrat I started to vote Libertarian. "No lesser of two weevils for me!" I said. I kept that up and felt clean for many years, until 8 years of Clinton convinced me of the danger of the democrats. I voted for George, and in spite of the fact that a free-spending authoritarian republican was still described as a "far right conservative" in the media, I figured that, times being what they were, this was the best we could do. Now some of the democrat movers and shakers are beginning to break with the famous party discipline of the kool-aid drinkers, it might be safe to vote libertarian again. If I could just convince them that sometimes war is the answer, without the smoking WMD, without the imminent threat, with only the code of the west as enunciated by Roger Miller in "Waterhole #3". It took five years, but the Democrats are finally realizing how democracy works - when the other side wins, they get to run things. Actually, it took 5 years, and Harriet Miers, for the Republicans to figure that out. Posted by: Michael on January 15, 2006 06:13 PM
"I kept that up and felt clean for many years, until 8 years of Clinton convinced me of the danger of the democrats." Was it the BJ or the fiscal responsibility? Or maybe the Family and Med Leave Act? I'd trade a month of Monicas for the level of fiscal and governing sanity under Clinton. The GOP is proving itself the all-corruption, all-the-time party. And the bribing and money laundering isn't peripheral -- it's what got them where they are. Posted by: tubino on January 15, 2006 06:18 PM

tubino you're such a banal douche, why do you even bother? Log Cabin's right, we certainly need one more to really swing the court and that needs to be a liberal. Few problems though, if there is an opening the Dems will really fight for it; it will likely happen after the 2006 elections, where the Repubs will loose some seats; and my general fear that some "moderate" Repubs, or even Bush himself will blink on this one, and go for some consensus pick. If you're a conservative and want to change the SCOTUS, depend on having to win 2008 presidential election and hold onto the Senate. That's what it's going to take. Posted by: Otho Laurence on January 15, 2006 06:42 PM
I've been trying over and over again to get Tubino's response to my messages to him in this thread, but he isn't interested in explaining himself. When somebody shows up, posts a bunch of inflammatory stuff, and then ignores anything anybody says in response to it, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that the person is just a troll, and is not seriously interested in an intellectually honest exchange of ideas. By the way, it's not like I think my questions to Tubino there are particularly important or insightful. That just happens to be the last thread where I made a serious attempt to engage Tubino in an honest discussion, after he assured me in another thread that he's not a troll. Since he's ignoring my comments, I'm forced to conclude the obvious; he was lying, and is not interested in an honest discussion. Tubino? Any comments for me? Posted by: SJKevin on January 15, 2006 06:43 PM
Go tubino, Go!!!! You've got all the right answers. If we'd just turn over the country to you antireligous bigots, and anti military surrender monkeys (read Murtha, Kerry, Durbin Et al.) why everything would be just peachy. No doubt the terrorists would just disappear and we'd live happily ever after. Say, with your amazing insights, you might be able to get a writing gig with Osama and his "freedom fighters" and maybe even win a Nobel Peace prize in the process!!!! Posted by: pendleton on January 15, 2006 06:46 PM
Tubino? Any comments for me? Yes. Bush sucks! Posted by: 2 B No on January 15, 2006 06:51 PM
tubino Oh, please. You are longing for the halcyon days of Clintonian integrity? Over a dozen convinctions -- not merely indictments, but convictions -- were obtained in the Whitewater scandal. I notice the media didn't bang the drum of "culture of corruption" as Susan McDougal and Jim Guy Tucker were hauled off to jail. I'll bet you didn't either. Bush spends like a drunken sailor, I'll grant you that. But Clinton's "fiscal responsibility" was largely due to the fact that the US wasn't involved in any serious military operations due to an unignorable attack like September 11th. Clinton was a lucky dog to ride revenues coming in from an Internet bubble, and from the illusion of peace -- an illusion purchased by kicking the can of terrorism into his successor's administration. Yes, one more SCOTUS appointment would be perfect. With a third appointment to the bench, we can survive 4-8 years of Dem rule. It would be like an insurance policy against major damage done to domestic policy or whacky ACLU lawsuit victories. Foreign policy would be damaged greatly with a two-term Dem presidency. One term is managable, two is not. With the high Reep voter turn-out, the absence of Bush the candidate, '08 looks good. And the redistricting from the 2010 Census, we look to be in pretty good shape for 2012. Posted by: Bart on January 15, 2006 08:29 PM
To the banal douche: "maybe the Family and Med Leave Act?" You want to know when public opinion turned against the nationalization of health care? It was when BC held up this "health security card" and said, to paraphrase, "JUST LIKE SOCIAL SECURITY, your health care will be guaranteed, JUST LIKE SOCIAL SECURITY, this card will safeguard your importand health rights, JUST LIKE SOCIAL SECURITY, only your president and congresspeople will be able to opt out for private care. "Social Security?" we asked, "We've had it now!" Posted by: mangas colorados on January 15, 2006 09:04 PM

And the redistricting from the 2010 Census, we look to be in pretty good shape for 2012. Abortion and contraception == liberal extinction. I can tell tubino the exact moment I left the Democratic Party: it was when that girl ambushed Al Gore with the question about Juanita Broderick, and listening him stammer and stumble and try to rationalize, I realized he wasn't denying the charges because he knew Bill Clinton was a rapist.

Another good barometer for the future political landscape is tubino. When Rick's comments are cute, partially concillatory (to establish fake ethos), and upbeat, it means the Left has the momentum. When Rick's ratchets up the rhetoric, insults, and seems angry, it means the big Mo is on the Right side. Lately, Rick Tubino has been very angry and aggitated. He hasn't been upbeat since Scooter got indicted. For a brief time, he was feeling good about the wiretaps, but that went down the drain quickly. Tubino's anger over the inevitable Alito appointment is quite surprising. I had no idea the fringe Left would be so upset over Alito. Great! That means Alito is a bigger victory than I had expected. Another thing to look forward is the State of the Union speech. President Bush will most certainly touch on the NSA wiretaps and the Patriot Act. The response will be typical from the boobs on the Left side. Sheila Jackson Lee, Dennis Kucinich, Wexler, and Rangel will surely vocalize their disapproval as the president speaks. Their boos and hisses, however, will go over like farts in church to the American people while the president is speaking about spying on Al Quaeda movements and communications in the U.S. in order to connect the dots and prevent attacks.

The only bad part of the trilogy are the Frodo/Sam chapters in The Two Towers. They're repetitive, slow, and mostly about the weather and terrain. But most everything else is good. Weirdly, the Frodo-Sam chapters in Return of the King are exciting and action-packed and among the best in the trilogy. (Though the chapters with everyone else in Return of the King get pretty slow again. Mostly people talking about marching towards war, and then marching towards war.)

Reports: The A-10 Thunderbolt, better known as The Warthog, has been unleashed on Iran
It's a heavily armored (the pilot sits in a titanim bathtub) slow-and-low loitering plane with a massive minigun firing depleted uranium rounds. The capability it brings is the ability to just fly big circles over the country waiting for a target to present itself. This is a weapons platform for eliminating vehicles and personnel. Its first task might be strafing the seas, clearing out any remaining attack boats and minelayers. Recent Comments
