Italian Judge Issues Warrants For 22 CIA Operatives For Kidnapping Egyptian "Cleric"This sort of story makes me happy. Because I didn't think Bush actually had the balls to authorize this sort of mission on friendly soil. But he does, Cheney love him. The Italian judge is quite right to issue the warrants. The CIA agents acted completely illegally on Italian sovereign soil. So I'm not at all angry at his decision. Protecting and enforcing your state's laws is the first priority of a judge. But I'm just delighted Bush ordered this, and I'm glad the CIA agents, save one, are, now, apparently nowhere to be found. Prosecutors have identified one of them as Robert Seldon Lady, a former CIA station chief in Milan who has since returned to the United States. Yep. That's the way I see it. Prosecutors allege that Nasr, a cleric believed to belong to an Islamic terror group, was flown from Italy to a military base in Germany before being put on a flight to Egypt, where he was tortured. F'n bonus, baby. posted by Ace at 02:19 PM

Kind of underlines the plight of the CIA in the PR war - we hear all about their anti-Bush leaking and rightly give them crap for it, but the good stuff - like the above - doesn't get the same degree of acclaim since it's covert and all... Which basically means that the asshats do more harm to the CIA's rep than the heroes can offset even though they may be working as hard (or harder). And on a separate note - while I agree Italy can and should be fighting this sort of thing, they brought it on themselves with the BS they pulled in Iraq, and as far as I'm concerned they deserve to be walked over like brainless ho's insofar as the WOT is concerned. More of that, please. Posted by: Scott on December 23, 2005 02:37 PM
Keep in mind that Italy (as a government, not necessarily the people) IS nominally on our side, unlike Spain, Russia, France, Germany, China ... We probably could move an AF base or two there from Germany, if Italy would let us. Perhaps kick off a new tourism push: "Italy, all the art and pretentiousness of France, just without the French" It's still good to see the CIA show some balls for once, though. While Italian President Berlosconi is a good guy and on our side, he cannot control the judiciary, intelligence apparatus or foregn ministry (kind of like Bush...) - which is why this was necessary, since they would never have extradited this dirtbag to the US. It is really unfortunate that we had to antagonize a country that is an ally - but it does send a positive message to all the terrorists wandering the streets of Europ. Posted by: holdfast on December 23, 2005 03:29 PM
Italy is our ally only in the most nominal sense, and after the bit with Oralana Felatio I wouldn't be too heartbroken if they hit the road. Posted by: Scott on December 23, 2005 03:37 PM

One of the things that I think resonates with many of us over reactions to Munich, is that we (I) respect the Israelis for their "you killed our athletes. we're going to hunt you down and kill you" attitude. Posted by: Dave in Texas on December 23, 2005 04:10 PM
Not to nitpick, but any operation by any government's intelligence organization in another country is, by its very nature, illegal. Posted by: Muslihoon on December 23, 2005 04:13 PM
The only thing to worry about is travelling to Europe? Not if the Italians are willing to kidnap him! Posted by: slickdpdx on December 23, 2005 04:47 PM
Um, is this the same Italy that allowed the Achille Lauro hijackers to wander off scot-free? The same Italy that paid a big ransom to the head-cutters in Iraq for the release of a far-left reporter (who probably allowed herself to be "kidnapped", trading the ransom for a story) after promising us they woudn't? As an American of Italian descent, I say to hell with Italy. Allies like them we DON'T need. Posted by: DaveP. on December 23, 2005 05:16 PM

?We probably could move an AF base or two there from Germany, if Italy would let us." Aviano Air Base is already there - also a military base (Caserma Edele) in Vicenza which has a U.S. Army Airborne Brigade. Spent 3 relatively happy years there. The Italians as a whole are great people - they just don't like any disruption in their daily routine. Posted by: MTW on December 23, 2005 11:47 PM

Its also the same Italy that went into Iraq with us and still has troops there. Just saying. Italy is about 1/5 of our population... Do they have more than 25,000 troops in Iraq? Has Berlusconi(sp?) ever refrained from playing both sides of 'support~withdrawal'solely in an effort to maintain his electoral viability regardless of the overall consequences? Other than Fabrizio Quattrocchi, do I give a rat's ass about anything the Italian's have ever said or done in the War on Terror? Survey says: No, no, and no. I lived for 2 years in Milano in the early 90's. They are just pacifists by nature. By that I mean, they just want to hang out with friends and family and have fun. They aren't really the "we hate America" types that you see in Germany and France. Posted by: Log Cabin on December 24, 2005 08:21 AM
Do they have more than 25,000 troops in Iraq? I doubt the entire EU could muster 25,000 troops for a deployment. With the exception of the UK, no european power can project any significant force anywhere. They are basically just an echo of the UN - all they can do is talk, so every crisis has to be a diplomatic problem. Posted by: VRWC Agent on December 24, 2005 10:13 AM

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. Robinson voice "where's your cuck now?" I posted his post on twitter and it's gotten 25K views so far. Thanks, Smell the Glove Chris

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source" Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held. Basil the Great
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.
Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing. Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult. Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending. (((Dan Hodges))) Nick Lowles
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98. Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years. Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45 Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%. I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens. REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs. Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
![]() That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time. I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
