Donna Brazile: "I will rebuild with you, Mr. President"

Mark in Mexico thinks she's a terrific American for giving the President her support in the reconstruction of the Gulf Coast.

I hate to be the cynic. But let me suggest another possibility. Those Democrats praising Bush's Thursday speech are doing so as part of a bit of cynical Kabuki theater.

See, they say "We're behind the President; we trust him to get this done." When the inevitable controversies arise -- corrupt Louisiana politicians and businessmen trying for big money and getting smacked down by inspectors general, some projects taking longer to rebuild than others, the economic heart of New Orleans getting rebuilt before its economically-impotent slums, the slums not being rebuilt as gold-plated upper-middle-class suburbs -- they'll then say, "We gave this President every chance. We trusted him and supported him. And now, once again, he has become a miserable failure on yet another issue."

Gee, ya think? After all, the Dems voted for the Iraq War, too. Hasn't stopped them from bitching about something they supported.

Sometimes, all they seem to understand is politics. Unfortunate, but at least it's predictable.

Cheers,

I think they're praising him because he's behaving precisely like a good Democrat should. Lots of spending, lots of empathy. Soft head, empty wallet.

Posted by: Allah on September 17, 2005 01:24 PM

Yes, but there must be something different in the mix. The Bush/Kennedy Education bill was lots of spending and lots of empathy, but Bush got zero praise for acting like a good Democrat on that one. Not even using Kennedy as a human shield -- and a good one he makes -- could protect him. And there's no way Brazile would have written this for any other initiative.

Maybe this is honest. Maybe Brazile loves New Orleans more than politics. That's a possibility. And even more interesting though vanishingly remote possibility is that there is something about Bush or what he said in his speech that appeals to African American women from New Orleans. I say this because of the Black women on ABC that had similar words of praise for the Prez, and they had no angle, obviously.

Maybe it's the fact that the president offered a ray of hope where few can be found.

Maybe it is political and Brazile thinks bashing the president on this is a losing proposition in the long term based on what her community is saying.

I can't come up with a satisfactory explanation -- even a cynical one -- for why Donna Brazile of all people wrote this while the political interpretation of Katrina is still up for grabs.

He used words that will (obviously) be backed up with concrete, plywood, nails, and real manual labor.

This is something democrats have never really offered on a large scale. Always lots of nice words, but little you could ever hold in your hand or weigh on a scale.

I think she sees the writing on the wall. Louisiana will be a solid Red State.

I also think she came to understand the Dem party better when they gave her no position at all in the 2004 campaign.

Posted by: clarice on September 17, 2005 02:38 PM

She and Sen Moron Landrieu support this because if New Orleans is not rebuilt as it was before Katrina the Dems wil definitely lose a US Senate seat, a governorship and at least one seat in the House of Representatives forever.

I dunno. I think it's a trick.

Get an axe.

"I hate to be the cynic."

As do I Ace and this time I choose not to be. Brazile strikes me as an old fashioned liberal D in the mold of Barbara Jordan; I don't recall instances of her joining the rabid.

Posted by: rascoe on September 17, 2005 04:56 PM

She's got a paying job at Georgetown to protect. Going off on Sheehanesque/Churchillesque rabidly moonbatish rants is not conducive to maintinaing phat gigs in the state of VA.

She's also young enough to harbor vague notions of regaining a cabinet level posting should some dem win the whitehouse in the future.

No matter what her "true feelings", she has to play nice here unless she wants to throw in with the "no visible means of support" race hustlers.

The present is prologue.

For those who need more FEMA stories.

If FEMA is still PREVENTING doctors from helping, do you really think this administration can handle rebuilding New Orleans? Think Baghdad on Bourbon Street.

Too cynical.

Too. too cynical.

Brazile is a wild card. Sometimes she talks moonbat, sometimes she doesn't.

During Bush's first term I was surprised to hear that she was in regular phone contact with Karl Rove. It's hard to imagine, say, Susan Estrich being able to maintain that kind of relationship.

Posted by: lyle on September 17, 2005 08:35 PM

Cynical? Moi? Now HERE I am being cynical:

Bush deliberately added to the lack of communication (no phone calls) with Blanco and the Brownie-FEMA inaction so that the situation would deteriorate to the point that she would have to ask for the use of troops that he is now advocating. It’s a power grab. Wanna roll back the Posse Comitatus Act?

I may be wrong about the cause/correlation (and I hope it's incompetence rather than evil), but there's no doubt that Bush is pushing for greater authority to use troops against us. It was in USA Today too, and it's the White House line.

The Nazi SS and SA were funded out of party funds, even after the Reichstag fire. How much more advanced, in the late capitalist era, to use taxpayer funds for the same purposes.

Yeah, I'm very cynical today.

Will someone kindly explain to Tubby the difference between "cynical" and "barking mad?"

If FEMA is still PREVENTING doctors from helping, do you really think this administration can handle rebuilding New Orleans?

All FEMA does is write checks, so I think the answer is yes.

Posted by: Tony on September 17, 2005 09:30 PM

Cynical or not, it's still smart. Like her push to make Democrats more credible on national defense. Even if it's for the wrong reason (winning over voters who rightly perceive Democrats as weak on defense), at least she's clear-eyed and recognizes the problem.

tubino: "... there's no doubt that Bush is pushing for greater authority to use troops against us."

If you say that Government is in a conspiracy to take your freedom away, you are just plain wrong. ... How dare you suggest that we in the freest nation on Earth live in tyranny! How dare you call yourselves patriots and heroes!

I say to you, all of you ... there is nothing patriotic about hating your country or pretending that you can love your country but despise your Government.

Yes. Cynical would be questioning their competence.

Bringing up references to Nazi Germany puts you in the barking mad column.

Yes. Thank you. Good Night.

the difference between "cynical" and "barking mad?"

Cynical == me
Barking mad == everyone else

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
