Happy, Happy: New World Trade Tower To Be DesignedThe cops don't like the security problems. I think the thing just sucks. Okay... I pitched this a ways back, before I was a big-time blogger being called a "concentrated dose of pure Lorenzo Lamas" by Jacki on CNN's Inside Politics. Let me pitch it again: We rebuild the Towers. Not quite as big as they were (hold on; there's a reason for that). Say-- 70 stories or so and a bit less imposing in girth. We build them in the opposite corners of the square they once stood in, to keep the "footprint" of the buildings undeveloped. (Why this is such a major concern, I have no f'n' idea, but a lot of people seem very, very insistent on it.) Now, the cute part: Between the towers -- connecting them, touching at their inside corners -- we add a third tower, this one even higher than the original two, towering above the two slightly-miniaturized old towers. This tower can be square or circular or oval-shaped at its base; doesn't really matter. The symbolism? Well, for one thing, the Towers that everyone wants back in the New York Skyline are, in fact, back. For another-- out of the destruction rises an even higher tower. And this new higher tower unites the old towers knocked down by the terrorists. Sort of a "together we stand higher" kind of a deal. Not subtle, of course, but then killing 2800 people in one day wasn't subtle either. We send a message: Knock 'em down, we'll just put them back up. Bigger, better, and more filled with "cultural imperialism" goodness. Now stop all this nonsense with these glass Dr. Seuss creations and give us back the sort of imposing, handsome, and stately architecture which everyone except avant-garde achitects prefer. posted by Ace at 05:30 PM
CommentsThat's a neat idea. I can't think of a single Ace schtick that applies in this situation. Dang. Uhhhh: Loose shit? Posted by: Greg on May 5, 2005 05:33 PM
You're overlooking the fact that one enormous tower flanked by two smaller ones could easily be shaped to resemble one giant middle finger. Which would also kick ass. Posted by: Il Padrino on May 5, 2005 05:36 PM
I like it. It would look like we're flippin em off too. Bonus. Posted by: Dave in Texas on May 5, 2005 05:36 PM
Just rebuild them as they were using modern materials and fireproofing. If you're worried about getting tenants in there, here's a nifty idea: the U.N. wants a new building (or at least a major remodeling) at Turtle Bay, doesn't it? Scrap that; put them in the Top 25 floors of each of the new Trade Center towers. It would make a powerful statement, and if the buildings are attacked again, it becomes a de facto attack on the world itself. Plan B: Relocate the U.N. to Europe. Yes, but we don't say that in the proposal, do we? Posted by: ace on May 5, 2005 05:37 PM
Meh... I never really liked IM Pei's WTC. It was cold and inhuman, and it overpowered the rest of the NYC skyline. I'd rather have something more organic and inviting. I agree that Freedom Tower was a monstrosity, but it's closer to my taste than was the original. Posted by: Richard on May 5, 2005 05:41 PM
I can't think of a single Ace schtick that applies in this situation. Dang. AMATEUR-RETRO-ARCHITECHTING LIKE A FUCK'N HAMMER! Nah -- doesn't exactly sing, does it. Posted by: Michael on May 5, 2005 05:49 PM
Why waste primo real estate on the UN? This whole windmill in the sky thing sucked ass. Besides some schmuk in Miami wants to build a 110 story condo for Chrissakes. Posted by: Iblis on May 5, 2005 05:53 PM
gr8 idea. Posted by: HundredPercenter on May 5, 2005 06:21 PM
out of the destruction rises an even higher tower Great idea ACE, those who wanted a memorial park to the dead are a buchn of whiney, little liberal bitches! How about a giant e plurbus uman (I'm from Texas) symbol? Posted by: 72maniacs on May 5, 2005 06:30 PM
I hated the plans from their inception and I cannot say that I am upset that they are going back to the drawing board. Would have been nice if they could have figured some of this shit out before they started building the monstrosity. Posted by: Stephen Macklin on May 5, 2005 06:39 PM
Totally agree, Ace. Posted by: rdbrewer on May 5, 2005 06:48 PM
I just don't understand why they aren't already built!!! It's ridiculous. Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on May 5, 2005 07:17 PM
And we put the UN in the top 40 floors with the Arab nations at the top. Then let the f'ers knock 'em down. In sh'allah baby. Posted by: number6 on May 5, 2005 07:35 PM
I wanted this. It was designed by Gaudi almost a hundred years ago, and nobody designs beautiful buildings like this anymore. Posted by: Wanda on May 5, 2005 09:37 PM
After the Great San Francisco Earthquake that levelled the city, it was 40% rebuilt by 1908. Nagasaki was rebuilt by 1950. So too London, Coventry, Budapest. Better than before. Rebuilt with only minor attention on "The Greatest Victims of All" in each city. Yeah they died, and that is a tragedy, but we're not turning it all into a big memorial to them. The Pentagon was rebuilt in a year, as I remember, with a small memorial to 1/100th of 1% of American soldiers killed in war set off the building. The problem with the WTC is the victims became the strident needs of the Victim families, or the Families of the Heroes, as they liked to say....and for 3 years it was All About Them. The sacred footprints to be worshipped and reamin forever untouched, the museum, the pools of reflection...the need for the architecture to be 9/11 made immortal as the Greatest Loss in History......and all the other schmaltz that came with the Mournathon...Promises were made by all the powers that be, billions spent...and still it's just a Pit, and it will be a Pit for years to come. And will be largely forgotten as the Murrah memorial building & Peace Park with the 158 metal chairs was when 9/11 happened, if a bigger attack happens. Posted by: Cedarford on May 5, 2005 09:50 PM
I'd love to see the Towers back. Just as they were. No taller, no shorter. People would ask, but how would we be memorializing them?.... By the simple fact that they're there again. No one on this earth can possibly NOT know what happened that day. Whether you're elated or devastated by the events of that day, you know that the Twin Towers fell. Putting them back in their rightful spots is not only an honor to those who died, but the biggest "fuck you" to those who cheered in the streets the days following 9/11. Rebuild 'em. Stronger. Posted by: Chad on May 5, 2005 09:58 PM
Good idea, except for the fact the bad guys now have three new targets to choose from Posted by: Kelly on May 5, 2005 11:39 PM
How come in the US we don't have any of the skyscrapers we see in sci-fi films? I wan't stuff from Blade runner or the Star Wars Coruscant planet or whatever it's called. Old established economies don't like fantastic new skyscrapers, young growing ones do. Dubai in particular is going all out. Posted by: jmchez on May 6, 2005 12:00 AM
So basically we're gonna build something really, really tall between two not so tall things? Kinda like Bob Dole's Cock? I'll be there to cut the f'n ribbon. Or should I say slice the f'n ribbon? Like a hammer. Posted by: Bob Dole's Cock on May 6, 2005 12:16 AM
Winston Churchill once said something to the effect of, if the Nazis knock down Big Ben or the Tower of London, it will be rebuilt; if they knock it down again it will be rebuilt again, etc. (I think). We should rebuild the Towers as they were, with a few modifications: Special rooftop accomodations for the UN and Arab League, right next to the anti-aircraft missile batteries. It would be simple enough to honor the victims with a memorial plaque or whatever they did to honor the victims of the Pentagon attack. Posted by: BattleofthePyramids on May 6, 2005 01:27 AM
I've seen that one Posted by: DANEgerus on May 6, 2005 01:54 AM
Let's seize the oil fields of Saudi Arabia and use the proceeds from sale of the oil to rebuild the Towers, with gold plate. At the top of the Towers, I'd like to have a special menagerie, where people can come to point and jeer at Saddam, "Crown Prince" Abdullah, Bandar bin Sultan, and everyone else to whom we grant quarter in coming years. Posted by: Shai Hulud on May 6, 2005 01:56 AM
Wanda ... If we build THAT, does the rest of NY become the proverbial bottom drawer of Ma's bedside nightstand? The one we're not allowed to look in? Posted by: BabyFinster on May 6, 2005 07:39 AM
Aw, c'mon - it's cool! It would be like living in a Fritz Lang movie - a German one, not one of those Westerns he made when he got to Hollywood. And I'd like it to be green, like in the picture, too, but on that I'm flexible. Posted by: Wanda on May 6, 2005 01:52 PM

We should build 5 towers, one of them opposable to the others, with the middle one straight up while the others are kind of hunched over. The symbolism will not be easy to miss. Plus, it fits NY to a t. Posted by: TallDave on May 6, 2005 04:03 PM
I'm with RWS -- why all the ditzing around?!? Enough with the schmaltz already: we've got *business* to do. Posted by: Claire on May 6, 2005 10:17 PM
People don't want to build over the footprints because the whole Pit is a graveyard and the footprints even more so. (In many U.S. cities, construction stops once a burial ground is discovered.) Besides, leaving the footprints empty reminds us that something that should be there is gone. Posted by: vivi on May 7, 2005 12:58 AM
Minoru Yamasaki's original design would have withstood the heat better. If the Federal regulations had not forced the owners to abate the asbestos fire-proofing, the death toll would have been much less. I agree with Ace, there should be a taller tower, with more square footage and a more unique design. The problem lies with the money that it will cost. To relieve the problem of stomping on hallowed ground, the site should be excavated and the remains that are left should be taken to Arlington National Cemetery and be given a proper place in the area near the Tomb of the Unknown.
