Fox Shocks: Docs-Box Knocks Kofi's & Kojo's Clocks?

Pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease...

U.N. investigators have turned over to Congress boxes of evidence on the Oil-for-Food program, including "proof" that U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan lied to the Independent Inquiry Committee probing the scandal, Fox News Channel reporter Jonathan Hunt said Thursday.

One source close to the case told me that in those boxes is the ammunition to prove that Kofi Annan lied to investigators," Hunt told Fox News Radio host Tony Snow. "So this is a very dramatic development indeed."

All I can say is: Indeed.

"The boxes contain the almost complete records of Parton's investigation," Hunt told Snow, explaining, "It looks very embarrassing for Kofi Annan right now - it's a very bad thing."

This must be some novel use of the phrase "very bad thing" with which I was not previously familiar.

Kind of like "bad" can really mean "fly" and "phat" or somethin', right?

You gunnin' to be Drudge's new assistant with that headline?

Kofi is just going to say "Its a French thing, you Americans wouldn't understand."
It'll be fun watching him dodge cameras and do the perp walk.

We got the UN to admit terrorism is a war-crime. Kofi has outlived his usefulness. Hang him out to dry.

Nah, tryin' to get a job at the New York Post.

Posted by: ace on May 5, 2005 04:41 PM

Jinx you bitches.

Posted by: fat kid on May 5, 2005 04:42 PM

Good luck with that then.

Posted by: Iblis on May 5, 2005 04:42 PM

So is this story impacting or developing?

Posted by: Christopher Cross on May 5, 2005 04:48 PM

I think it's compacting (like a bowel movement)

Posted by: fat kid on May 5, 2005 04:52 PM

I can't figure out this story. I mean, I can see Kofi lying to investigators and all, but the Volcker angle is what's puzzling me. That guy is 'Mr. Wash. Insider," our former Fed. Reserve Chairman for crying out loud. Has he really thrown away his good name, covered for Kofi, tried to muzzle honest investigators with that dip. immunity crap, for... what? Because he loves the UN as an institution so much? One of the crowd that thinks it needs to be strong to curb the US?

Even if those are his sentiments, I just find it hard to believe he'd rig an investigation, and that is what this story seems to be moving toward telling us he did, right? Just can't come up with any good reason why he tried to stonewall, block those investigators. I guess I wanna hear Volcker explain himself.

Posted by: Ray Midge on May 5, 2005 04:53 PM

If there was anybody around who'd know how to hide money, it'd probably be a former Treasury Secretary dontcha think?

Posted by: Iblis on May 5, 2005 04:55 PM

Meant Fed Chair not Treas Sec.

Posted by: Iblis on May 5, 2005 04:55 PM

Ray,

I thought the same about Volcker. However, a recent article indicates there may be a connection between Volcker and a Canadian company (which PM Paul Martin was involved with) that took money from Saddam.

Posted by: PotatoHeadBobby on May 5, 2005 05:00 PM

One thing I worry about is that Kofi will end up resigning in disgrace, the right will get their trophy, the UN will make a bunch of noises about reform, and nothing fundamental will change.

We don't need a temporary respite in the UN's corruption, child rape, human trafficking, dictator-coddling, terrorism-supporting, anti-capitalism, and anti-semitism; we need a permanent end to it. Or at least, to US taxpayer support of it.

Don't get me wrong. I'd be glad to see Kofi exposed for the thief he is. But we cannot let this individual obscure the big picture. It's not Kofi who needs to go; it's the whole UN system.

Posted by: SJKevin on May 5, 2005 05:04 PM

IT is because Volker is the ultimate insider that he thought he could cover up. He's a "I know what is the best outcome" type of pompous ass, just the kind you send in to put a wet seal of approval on a box of shit. This isn't the first "investigation" that he's led that has been a whitewash. But hopefully, it will be the last.

He is a supercillious ass. He injects himself like Moses into debates long after he was sent out to pasture, and always speaks as if his opinion is the final word.

He thought this was going to just fly on by without a peep. Volcker has spoken. Case closed.

Mr. Parton, along with the other lady, decided that wasn't going to be the end of it.

So 2 sanctimonious super-elites for the price of one. Doesn't get better than that.

Kewell, as the kids say... or said... at some point when that was cool.

Anyway.

I don't believe Volker and the admin are exactly unhappy about the release. In fact, they couldn't have planned it better. This way, they get continued cooperation from Kofi--who owes heap big favor--while still getting to break the UN's balls.

Which reminds me: where's that HHGG review you promised? (Or did I miss it?)

Posted by: Stumbo on May 5, 2005 05:09 PM

How about v0lker was creating some political capital in not coming down like a shitton of bricks on Kofi (who has street cred with the rest of the world - who hate us). Kofi would then be appreciative of our goodwill in not (completely) ruining him and his son, in exchange for not being an obstructionist bitch...

The devil you know...

Basically we'd have bought him off, without compromising the shit out of the UN, which (despite our gripes) is an organization we sort of need... even if it is only a bully pulpit for us.

Then again, maybe I'm being too machiavellian, but that's what I would have done.

Posted by: fat kid on May 5, 2005 05:12 PM

Fatkid- I agree. But at the end of the day sometimes it's best to just go with what is right (getting rid of a scumbag) than trying to re-arrange deck chairs on the Titanic.

There are parts of gov't that want us out of the UN and parts that want us to work with the UN. I am solidly in the "get out" camp. For my fellow campers, keeping him around as our bitch isn't what they're looking for. We want the UN destroyed as a credible organization.

Don't forget there are alot of internationalists in government these days. The President's father was one of the biggest.

The UN has not and cannot help us, and has proven useless as a proxy. Instead we get ICC's and the Supremes using foreign and internationalist law to make rulings. It all has the same stink about it. It all must go.

Posted by: AndrewF on May 5, 2005 05:32 PM

Fox News Channel reporter Jonathan Hunt , "Mr. Annan, will you be stepping down based on this new information?"

Mr. Kofi Annan, "...hell no....next question..."

Posted by: Terri on May 5, 2005 05:34 PM

My Dear Kofi:

Are you a total idiot? Bill Clinton could have told you. So can I. You can get away with almost any kind of corruption (insider trading, for example), but if there's an investigation don't fucking lie to the investigators. You just give them a second shot with allegations that you obstructed justice.

Just say you don't remember all the details.

Sheeeesh.

Posted by: Martha Stewart on May 5, 2005 05:35 PM

Leaving Kofi in charge might actually be the best method of undermining the UN, if that's the goal.

Posted by: SJKevin on May 5, 2005 05:39 PM

I'm thinking Kofi needs a good lawyer. In fact, he is going to want to retain the best legal talent he can get. He needs the kind of legal genius who can win a landmark case before the OREGON SUPREME COURT!

Hey Hob, got time for another client?

Posted by: Michael on May 5, 2005 05:42 PM

"...we need a permanent end to it. Or at least, to US taxpayer support of it."

You say tomato, I say to-MAH-to.

Posted by: Sobek on May 5, 2005 05:49 PM

The United Nations has lost any credibility it ever had. The only thing that unites the United Nations these days is fear and loathing of the United States and its true allies, and the hope that we can be gulled into believing that we need their say-so in order to "legitimize" anything we do in our own defense.

I don't care if other nations want to organize what amounts to an anti-American chat room. But it is beyond belief that American taxpayers continue to pay for this. Let them blow off steam on their own nickel. And let them move to Paris, where all the political sycophants from dipshit little countries who managed to get appointed to the U.N. and acquire diplomatic immunity can double-park at will on someone else's streets.

We will still belong to the most succesful organization of sovereign states that has ever existed on this planet. It's called the United States of America. And we will still belong to the second most successful organization of sovereign states that has ever existed on this planet. It's called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Both are grounded on common interests and values. The UN no longer represents any kind of common cause.

Michael,

When did your jealousy become bitterness?

Just answer the question, counselor.

And defending Annan wouldn't be my bag of tea (in your mouth). Nor would it be on par with stirring renditions of old Batman dialogue. So I'll have to humbly plead incompetence in that regard, and decline the representation.

But hey, the county's going to enjoy the $400,000 bill we're sending them today.

Posted by: hobgoblin on May 5, 2005 06:40 PM

The only good reason I've heard for staying involved in the UN is that having it here makes it easier for our spies to gain access to foreign diplomats. That may come in handy sometime. After all, it's a lot easier for Americans to blend in in America than in Paris. Other than that, I can see no real benefit to continued US recognition of what amounts to a hostile government residing on American soil.

Posted by: OCBill on May 5, 2005 07:05 PM

The UN has been nothing but a "hate America" club since its inception. Total waste. When they're not hating us they're hating Israel (and credit to John Bolton for managing to get that stupid zionism=racism decision turned over).

In the original UN charter, Stalin argued for and got 3 votes in the General Assembly for the USSR, arguing they were a conferation of 15 sovereign nations. It's gone downhill since.

Interesting contrast between the AP story on this and the al-Reuters story. AP's headline reads "Congress Gets Subpoenaed U.N. Documents," and reports the story pretty much straight.

Reuters' headline, on the other hand, reads: "Defiant U.N. sleuth hands over oil-for-food papers." Reuters' article notes that Voelcker was "outrage[d]" in the first paragraph, and notes in the second paragraph that Parton turned over the docs "even though he signed a confidentiality agreement when he was hired and certified when he left that he possessed no documents related to his work." Only in paragraph 14 does it note that Parton was subpoenaed -- after quoting "U.N. officials" in paragraph 13 as saying that "Parton, as a lawyer, could be disbarred for violating his confidentiality agreement or sued by the Volcker panel for providing the documents without permission."

As the man says, what media bias?

We do not have them, Uncle Sam
There are no notes from our oil scam
we threw the books out with the junk
since we knew our careers were sunk

We filled our luggages full up with cash
to keep you federals off our stash
so now you cannot prove a thing
while our swiss bank accounts ka-ching!

But wait, what is that that we hear
that fills our very bones with fear
one investigator who was not bought
who kept the things that we forgot?

Oh, Parton, you did not play fair
with the information we did share
and now the whole world will now find out
Just what the UN is all about:

Greed, corruption and shameful lust
But at least it's not a total bust
The media loves to suck our cocks
So no-one will hear about that box.
