Crazy-Cool Video

Guy jumps out of a helicopter and glides towards a snowy peak on flying-fox style membranes under his arms and between his legs.

Only disappointment: he pulls a parachute at the end. I was really hoping he had the balls enough to try to land off the glide, maybe on skis or something.

I have a feeling the James Bond people will be calling this guy in the next week.

That's a close to flying as a human can get.

Unbelievable!

Totally OT: Unf'inbelievable. But of course it's the Jesus freaks who are the real threat out there, right?

Wow. Just freakin' wow. I need to try that.

Any idea-- do they make these wings in husky sizes?

Cheers,

Actually, I believe my t-shirt comes complete with gliding membranes. I didn't advertise it, of course, because of fear of liability were someone to misuse the membranes.

Those things have been in use for a while. You can free-fall for longer with them than without, but actually landing without a parachute is unlikely. People have tried larger "wings" but get them too big and they'll rip your limbs off.

Maybe someone will eventually figure out how to slowly increase the surface area while gradually slowing speed. . . .

Squirrel suit.

They used a couple in the second Tomb Raider movie.

At least one guy is working on some way to fly one fast enough to get a flat glide slope, and is planning on dumping into a lake for the landing. He'll be doing a hundred MPH or so when he hits (maybe as low as 70).

Current suits tend to have a vertical speed of 30 MPH or so with a low-end horizontal of 90 MPH.

Friends been jumping them for 3 years now.

NB: the guy who came up with the soft inflatable wing suit concept, Patrick DeGayardon, was killed when he had a parachute malfunction on one of the prototype suits.

Obviously, trying to land one of these is a mistake one makes only once.

He has a foxy "membrane...between his legs?" When did Ace become Wonkette?
