The Arab Street Explodes Again: "No To Terrorism!"

They can kill, but they can't win:

More than 2,000 people demonstrated Tuesday at the site of a car bombing south of Baghdad that killed 125 people, chanting "No to terrorism!"

The article then discusses a kidnapped French journalist for about an hour and a half-- I'm not trying to be uncaring of the journalist's fate, but it does seem the writer wanted to immediately tell you about ongoing bad news after (sadly) reporting the good.

More than 2,000 people held the impromptu demonstration on front of the clinic, chanting "No to terrorism!" and "No to Baathism and Wahhabism!"

I'm not sure what to say about this:

The demonstrators also demanded that interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi step down.

The best spin I can put on it is this: when people are incensed, they will, in a normal sort of country, criticize their politicians and demand change. That is democracy -- even if democracy is sometimes short-sighted and prone to unthinking tumult.

And even better: the demonstrators weren't killed for speaking their minds.

JUST SAY NO TO SOCIAL SECURITY PRIVATIZATION!!! The spice must flow (to gov't coffers)!!

You forgot Halliburton.

I think you have the right take on the issue of them protesting Allawi. The fact that they can now do that and not get killed or imprisoned by their own gov't says a lot.

Good point Head Cheese... hehehe

Posted by: fat kid on March 1, 2005 04:23 PM

I think the Allawi thing is simple - his list lost the election. The Iraqis want the team they voted in to deal with this stuff and that means Al-Jaafari needs the office space.

I'll let the Democrats have "The Spice Must Flow" as long as we Republicans get "Long Live the Fighters!".

Posted by: SparcVark on March 1, 2005 05:51 PM

It's hard to interpret the anti-Allawi statements. Was it the mood of the whole crowd, or just one person who was interviewed? I've become very skeptical of the media's attempts to represent Iraqi public opinion, since over and over I've seen them present one pro-Saddam Iraqi's views as if they were mainstream.

It's kinduv a moot point, though, because as Gib points out, Allawi lost the election.

But more importantly, right or wrong, fair or unfair, it could be a sign that Iraqis are holding their own government officials accountable for what happens in Iraq, rather than America. And that is surely a good thing.

You know what? This is just... just beyond... Look at what's going on.

Iraqis protests AGAINST terrorism.

Lebanese protest FOR self governance and freedom.

In Palestine, no celebrations for the latest Tel Aviv bombing, in fact the opposite: not so muted outrage at jeopardizing the peace process.

This is abolutely INSANE! Is there any person who watched the Arab Street's gleeful reaction to 9/11 and thougtht this would be happening in even some bizarre parallel universe?

So much of terrorism is just boredom, street gangs filled with poor kids (rich kids too) needing a cause to fill a void, a way to feel involved in a "Great Struggle." America's actions have shown them there is an even greater struggle, one higher than 'kill the jews!' or 'destroy america!' There is a fight against an even greater Satan. It's a fight for their basic human freedoms. A new fight has been shown to them and it's not so unimaginable anymore.

What was once inconceivable has become, through the American President's steadfastness, force of will and lack of nuance, now oh-so-conceivable.

Who knows where this is heading? Imagine how this must be energizing the moderates in Iran. On the one hand, I want to sound all smart and say grown up-py, circumspect things that begin 'A nice start, but unlikely in the short run to...' But things are moving so quick I'm worried that that might be disproven with my next click on Drudge.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
