My Eyes! My Eyes!

Just when you thought George Galloway couldn't fall any further:

As shocking as that picture is, it gets even more so when you read the article, and realize that's a dude he's standing next to.

I don't have a problem with a politician doing this. If the voters don't like it they can dump him.

I have the lowest opinion of this man because of his traitorous actions and statements, but this stunt doesn't lower him any further.

When real life becomes it's own best parody...

Incidentally we all know why this is greeted with a "ho hum" by the same people who would be going berserk with international schadenfreude if it was say Frist and DeLay in the unitards, don't we?

Posted by: Scott on January 23, 2006 03:10 PM

I bet Hitchens is, instead, kicking himself for ever giving this looney-toon any level of respectability by attempting to engage him in debate.

As much as I despise this piece of human detritus, I am starting to feel sorry for him. He is obviously in the initial stages of dementia and will quite likely be under the full-time care of a psychiatric professional. He has really gone off the deep-end.

How is this different from Bill Clinton talking about "boxers or briefs?"

I mean, other than the fact that a geezer like Galloway looks better in a leotard than pasty lump o' lard Clinton (Bill or Hillary) would.

Posted by: bbeck on January 23, 2006 03:22 PM

Or they'll make him Chairman of the democratic party when Dean's head finally explodes.

Posted by: rickinstl on January 23, 2006 03:23 PM

well, he is certainly showing that he is more than qualified for that role.

"You spin me right round baby, right round like a record baby, round round round round"

I'd listened to most of that debate between Galloway and Hitchens before tuning into the Victor Davis Hanson v. Arriana Huff n' Puffington.

Now it's clear this guy is totally bonkers.

How is this different from Bill Clinton talking about "boxers or briefs?"

bbeck, I think you have overlooked the significance of this photograph. The leotard is, frankly, the least of the problems. This image was taken while the Respect (ha!) MP was attempting to convey the emotion of shock that an imaginary puppy had failed to come while called. Galloway was expressing this emotion through the magic of the Mr. Roboto dance.

Sadly, I am serious. Read the article. Look carefully at the expression on his face, and his awkwardly stiff fingers. I cannot look at that picture without hearing that synthesizer from Revenge of the Nerds.

Posted by: Pompous on January 23, 2006 03:41 PM

Why is he doing this? And why isn't the British press having a field day?

Posted by: shawn on January 23, 2006 03:46 PM

You guys are just dissing him because he has the guts to speak truth to power! That's right Galloway is willing to stand up to the man!

Look that's the difference between you Conservatives and liberals. You shut yourself off in your stuffy bourgeois ticky-tack boxes and criticize anyone who is different! Liberals like Galloway explore the world in new ways and celebrate perversity!

Uhm,,,diversity I mean. They celebrate diversity!

Posted by: Red Jode on January 23, 2006 03:53 PM

The article should be titled "Pete Burns sinks to new low."

Posted by: X. on January 23, 2006 04:21 PM

He's never exactly been a darling of the right. I only made that comment because Hitchens once debated Galloway.

But please, don't allow me to get in the way of your threadjacking.

Talk about FUPA.

Posted by: steve_in_hb on January 23, 2006 04:30 PM

Looks like Hitch is going to fall out of favor with the right again...

*yawn* Whatever.

Anyone remotely familiar with Hitchens would see that, far from coming over to the right, he has simply taken common cause with the right anent the GWOT and fighting Islamofascism. Beyond that he is a confessed liberal on virtually every other matter.

Posted by: kelly on January 23, 2006 04:30 PM

X. why do people on the left assume, wrongly and repeatedly, that people on the right reflexively agree with everything the president says or does? If you were even a casual observer of writings here you would see plenty of times when people disagree with Bush or the Republicans in Congress.

I'm not a Republican but I do consider myself to the right of the spectrum on most issues, national security further right than most. The fact that an ex-troksyite disagrees with some of Bushes policies doesn't surprise or dismay me.

But on the topic at hand, I think its fair to say that Hitchens thinks Galloway is a deceitful, bloviating ego-maniac who eagerly sold out his own country for personal gain. I'm sure he is enjoying Galloway's decent into the gutter. And on this issue, he and I are in complete agreement.

Posted by: JackStraw on January 23, 2006 04:32 PM

"Why is he doing this?"

Because I have his family chained to a radiator in the basement of a dingy London flat, that's why.

Posted by: Tres on January 23, 2006 05:24 PM

Does anyone think it's all about money? What if Galloway has a drug problem, a gambling problem, a mistress, or something. That's why he had to sell out his country by making under-the-table deals with Saddam Hussein. Now that that spigot's turned off, he's desperate.

Posted by: Carl O. Witz on January 23, 2006 05:56 PM

Hitchens is extremely intelligent and somewhat bombastic and even offensive in expressing his opinions. Still, there is an intellectual honesty there, so while I don't always agree with him, I almost always respect him.

When he "came over to our side" I certainly didn't expect him to toe the line on every single issue. I expected Hitchens to be Hitchens, and that's not what he does. I'm actually surprised that it took this long before he had a major disagreement like this. I'll certainly hear him out, and maybe he has some good points. Maybe I'll even change my mind. But if I don't, I suspect I'll still come away thinking that he's doing what he's doing for the right reasons.

As for Galloway, I don't see why his foolishness is being celebrated. If anything, this kind of this humanizes him and will endear him to people. Before you disagree, consider how you'd feel if, say, Saddam Hussein became a star of silly show like this. Would that also be amusing? Personally, I don't think anything should be amusing about either of those two, regardless of how sure we think we are that people are laughing at them and not with with them.

Notice in the article that his housemates caught him cheating and have barred him from voting this week.

The guy can't even play by the rules in a stupid TV show...

Posted by: Lipstick on January 23, 2006 06:42 PM

Humanizes him?

People seeing him tear up at the end of Ole Yeller would be humanizing. Watching him pretend to be a cat or dress in a red body leotard while playing charades with a transvesitite makes people think he's fucking loony.

Then again, if you refer to that as "Saturday night" in your house, maybe it is humanizing for you.

Maybe. Or maybe it makes them think of that crazy guy they knew in college who do all kinds of wacky stuff.

I'd like to think you were right and that people doing stupid and ridiculous things would tend to make the public look down on them. But I think the history of reality shows indicates otherwise. While there is an element of laughing at the people involved, people also seem to find it kind of endearing when someone's willing to put themselves into humiliating situations.

With Galloway, I'd rather people simply look at him with disgust for the shady dealings he had with Iraq rather than think, "ha ha, remember when he wore that silly red costume on that show?"

Then again, if you refer to that as "Saturday night" in your house, maybe it is humanizing for you.

Nice.

I didn't say it humanized him for me. My point is there is a large segment of the public that looks with fondness upon people willing to do wacky things and that I don't think a potential transformation of Galloway from "evil scum"to "silly goofball" is something that we should celebrate.

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. -- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.
(((Dan Hodges)))
@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
spidermanthreatormenace.jpg

That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time.
I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
