Sheep Creek Overlook.jpg

Sheep Creek Overlook

Eleven miles south of Manila, Utah on UT Hwy 44 is the Sheep Creek Bay Interpretive Overlook. This paved pullout sits nearly 500 feet above the surface of the reservoir and rewards visitors with sweeping views of Sheep Creek Bay, a great launching point for water activities. During his historic Green River and Colorado River expedition in 1869, John Wesley Powell and crew named the area after witnessing the sun reflecting off the brilliant red hues of the sandstone cliffs towering above the Green River. Today visitors can witness the same spectacle by making a stop to the overlook during sunrise or sunset year-round.

Bake the cake. Martha's Vineyard, of course. Pose, gossip, sip, repeat - and that's just the dog groomer.

Alan Dershowitz, the renowned legal scholar and longtime defender of civil liberties, recently found himself at the center of a bizarre confrontation at the West Tisbury Farmers Market on Martha’s Vineyard. What started as an attempt to purchase some pierogis escalated into a public dispute that lays bare the growing intolerance among certain progressive circles.

Dershowitz, who has faced backlash for his past representation of high-profile clients Jeffrey Epstein and his vocal support for Israel, was refused service by vendor Krem Miskevich of Good Pierogi. The incident, now dubbed “Pierogi-gate,” has sparked debates about discrimination, free speech, and the left’s selective application of principles like inclusivity.

I could care less about the "Generation Flame Wars." Gen Z gets a downward head nod for this one. Older(ish) article.

Gen Z pounding the Guiness beer

At first glance, a 265-year-old beer brand may seem like an odd fit for Gen Z consumers, many of whom are more accustomed to CBD gummies and adaptogenic drinks than they are to a frothy stout. The trend calls to mind Pabst Blue Ribbon’s resurgence in the late 2010s. Unlike Pabst, however, which made a comeback thanks to hipsters, Guinness’ popularity rests squarely on the shoulders of social media influencers. Or, as many have taken to calling them, Guinnfluencers.

For dads of daughters and those that may be a son-in-law. Any that have already navigated - weigh in. For those that have not, read the information at the link and the comments carefully.

Questions for future son-in-law. (This is your cue, Horde)

- Do you have more shoes than my daughter? If so, that's a red flag.
- Can you parallel park?
- Do you know how to change a tire?
- Do you own more than one firearm?
- Do you know that when my daughter says, "Nothing is wrong," it's a trap?
- Longbow or crossbow?
- As the article below mentions, "Are you a communist?"

Wise words from AoSHQ regular commenter, Admiral Ackbar (of highly questionable links) speaks the truth.

Asking a dad for his daughter's hand in marriage.

A refreshingly, old-school overture that is deeply appreciated. I am a big fan of having my expectations managed—particularly with regards to my daughter and her happiness with the opposite sex.

Mrs. Shepherd asked why the prospective son-in-law—code named “Too Tall”—didn’t just call me or schedule a more personal Zoom? “No, Mom,” my daughter said, “he wants to ask Dad in person.” I nodded, thinking well-played future son-in-law, you will be seeing me soon.

blood falls.jpg

Nature is pretty cool high clover neato.Blood Falls, Antarctica.

According to Forbes, Blood Waterfall was discovered over 110 years ago by geoscientist Griffith Taylor. Mr Taylor gave his name both to the glacier where he found the spewing red water and to Taylor Valley, into which the glacier flows.

Initially, researchers believed that the colour of the waterfall could be because of red algae content in the water. However, new research recently explained that the waterfall is rich in iron, which reacts with oxygen in the air when the water emerges from the glacier, staining it a bloody crimson colour.

Another thing that left scientists baffled was the temperature in the area, which is almost minus 19 degrees Celcius. So, the fact that the water was running and not frozen solid was surprising.

Always time for a sniper reference. Or two.

I have a lot of questions about this. However, any reading about snipers is worth a look. Human Freeze Response and snipers. H/T to RCP - Real Clear Science.

She offers two very different examples of people who are able to control the freeze response to their advantage.

One is living statues, those street performers you see in tourist hotspots who are able to stay almost unnaturally still. The other? Snipers.

Military marksmen also stay incredibly still, while simultaneously making critical decisions about accuracy and when to take a shot in a life-or-death situation.

It’s something Roelofs has replicated in the lab and her work has also been integrated into training for the Dutch police.

She created a virtual reality shooting game where players “have to make decisions on a threat and we force them to keep their heart rate in a certain area.”

Roelofs says: “We found that the stronger the magnitude of the freezing [based on measurements of players’ heart rates], the better they were at the game and the faster they were in their decisions.”

Music found while thumbing through my cool uncle's CD collection. Or as he called it, real music.

Bangles song at the bottom - A lot of scene snips from the movie Less than Zero. Peak Jami Gertz. Few if any played a douche-nozzle-type-character better than James Spader.
