The only way this story makes sense is if the leak was meant to undermine the credibility of Germans who are trying to make common cause with al Qaeda: if Zarqawi thinks German jihadophiles are actually spies, he may shoot first and ask questions later - which would be poetic justice, IMHO.

The Gestapo pulled a similar stunt before WWII: they mailed letters to the top Soviet generals, thanking them for their help and giving details of payments. They'd made it all up, but Stalin - who was indeed "batshit crazy", and who had his secret police read all the mail as a matter of routine - took it seriously and had the generals shot. Which made the German invasion of Russia a couple of years later that much easier.

Right, because he would never assume that the person acting as a go-between with him and German intelligence might be a spy. Just because he's evil doesn't make him stupid.

Assume she's a spy. Why pay a ransom for a spy versus any other citizen? In the end the result is the same, you've provided a greater incentive to kidnap. Why didn't she come home to the Fatherland? Did she stay to make herself appear sympathetic to the cause so she could further infiltrate? If so, wtf out her as a spy? Something's not right here. Maybe she's a double or triple agent or, more likely, just a putz.
