King Kong: The Godzilla of Giant Monster Movies?Allah once again: Kong's Thursday night box-office falls 35%. Now, yes, the previous night was the premiere, so some drop-off might be expected... but it's not a standard premiere night (like a Friday or a major holiday), so... we shouldn't have that much of a drop off, should we? I mean, this is just one inconvenient weekday night after another. For comparison's sake, Narnia only dropped off 3.7% Wednesday to Thursday. Allah might owe Hugh Hewitt an apology. King Kong's box-office is definitely not a solid B+. Greenlight This Immediately Update: Kelly thinks of a way to combine two current Hollywood obsessions-- How about a movie about two giant gay gorillas with a forbidden love? posted by Ace at 04:51 PM
CommentsAllah might owe Hugh Hewitt an apology. King Kong's box-office is definitely not a solid B+. I was just going to say, if Hugh's got any of that shit sandwich left, I'd be happy to finish it off. Posted by: Allah on December 16, 2005 04:57 PM
Allah, you just know he's going to ask you to go with him to BM .... Posted by: DeeDaGo on December 16, 2005 05:00 PM
Now if King Kong and Godzilla were gay and I got to see them having savage butt sex on the big screen, I'd buy me a ticket and splurge for an extra large Slurpee! Posted by: compos mentis on December 16, 2005 05:02 PM
I was just talking to Karol about going to see BM tonight with her and some friends. I told her: no Ace? No Allah. Posted by: Allah on December 16, 2005 05:02 PM
Yeahp. Look's like Kong's going to lay an egg in terms of box-office. That's what you get when you let a director make an ego movie. Ridley Scott gave us Legend (with Tom Frickin' Cruise). Michael Cimino gave us the turkey known as Heaven's Gate. Tarantino delivered Kill Bill. Spielberg's was Hook (holy crap, did that movie suck). Francis Ford Coppola...well, hell, take any movie he made after Apocalypse Now. It's possible that Kong will do a huge weekend business, but somehow I doubt it. Posted by: Monty on December 16, 2005 05:03 PM
I didn't think the movie was that bad -- weird, yes -- but if it continues to tank, I'll be shocked. Any hope for Peter Jackson that it will pick up? Posted by: Another Dave on December 16, 2005 05:03 PM
They just played about 10 clips from BM on Medved. The dialogue is laughable. How can anyone see it and not burst out in laughter? If Ace and Allah go, I can see them not being able to hold back, pissing off the mostly gay audience and end up seriously bitched slapped. Posted by: on December 16, 2005 05:12 PM
Hmm. Sure hope this isn't the end of the story. Kong actually sounds pretty good, to tell you the truth. Moreover, it sounds like it's worth seeing in an actual theatre, not just on DVD. This just doesn't seem fair. "Godzilla" sucked; it deserved to die. Plus, you had the added pleasure of watching Taco Bell and about six other crap-merchants take a bath on all the marketing tie-ins. Posted by: utron on December 16, 2005 05:14 PM
I think they picked the wrong time of year to release this flick -- it's more of a summer "blockbuster" movie, not a Christmas "Oscar bait" movie. Plus it has to go up against not just Narnia but also the most recent Harry Potter flick. Teens and twentysomethings were always going to make or break this flick, and the audience just ain't there -- the older demographic just isn't showing up. It would have done better during the summer when school was out. The weekend numbers will tell the story of kids give shit about a giant ape or not. (Now, me, I would have had Naomi Watts running around topless for the whole Skull Island segment. That would have packed the theaters like sardine cans! Giant apes and naked female boobies are like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups -- two great tastes that go great together!) Posted by: Monty on December 16, 2005 05:16 PM
Nameless, Your not one of the self-annointed which is why you don't get it. The annointed pity you. Sincerely, The Left Posted by: Birkel on December 16, 2005 05:16 PM
I dunno. I don't watch movies in the theater as a rule, but I can recognize the ones I would see if I did. I'd like to see the Potter movie (it's a relatively painless date movie), the Narnia movie (I loved the books as a kid), but Kong? Meh. I'll rent it when it comes out on DVD, and I'll likely be impressed by the effects. But beyond appreciating the effects, I just don't see much reason to watch the movie. How about a movie about two giant gay gorillas with a forbidden love? Call it Silverback Mountain. Posted by: kelly on December 16, 2005 05:24 PM
I hear that Sullivan is coming out with a movie next year, an escapist jaunt called "Bareback Mountain." Posted by: Another Dave on December 16, 2005 05:29 PM

Why haven't people begun making the obvious play on words with the "Mountain" part of Brokebake Mountain, i.e. Bareback Mounted or Bareback Mounting? Curious minds want to know. Posted by: 4thgenerationbuck on December 16, 2005 05:52 PM
Medved gave it a decent review. Said lots of dinosaurs and you would get your money's worth. Posted by: on December 16, 2005 05:53 PM
Maybe I really am an old man, as I was accused of earlier today, but 1. I really want to see King Kong and will definitely see it. 2. NFW am I going to see a 3+ hour movie on a weekday unless I really, really need to see it. I'm kind of surprised it only did $10M on Wednesday, but maybe a lot of other people feel that way. I'm not at all surprised by Thursday dropping -- it's a weekday and it's not the opening day, so what's the point? If you were dying to see it and willing to go on a weekday you'd have gone on Wednesday, right? Maybe it really will bomb, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did well starting tonight. Okay, if this *really* is a trend, this sucks. I know shitty hack movies, and King Kong is not a shitty hack movie. It has flaws, sure, but the good stuff is really f'ing good. This is not some crapfest like Godzilla-- hell, I enjoyed Kong more than I enjoyed Return of the King, and *that* movie won Best Picture. I'm kinda with Monty here-- it's an odd time to release the movie, just before Christmas while people are busy with shopping and parties, kids still in school, etc. I'm sure the idea was to replicate Jackson's success with the LOTR movies, but those had built in audiences from the books, and after Fellowship came out, built in audiences from the movies. Bottom line: big Christmas movies are possible, but it *is* harder. Shame if Kong gets lost because of something folks couldn't control (especially since if you have any desire at all to see it, you MUST see it in a big screen Dolby/THX/SDS theater. Waiting to watch Kong on DVD is like fucking a Real Doll). Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on December 16, 2005 06:16 PM

Yeah, it is. I mean, if I knew what fucking a Real Doll was like, which I don't, because have you seen the prices on those things? I can't possibly afford one. Which is why I stick to crack whores. Cheap *and* affordable. Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on December 16, 2005 06:37 PM

Ken-- Squid & The Whale? Man, that movie was tedious. Yeah, Jeff Daniels was good in it-- he's good in nearly everything, way underrated-- but it was just too blah. And I normally like Wes Anderson-styled "quirky" films. Just not much there, I thought. Well, aside from Anna Paquin, who really is all kinds of hotness. I went to see KK today. I walked out after 2 (of the 3) hours. I just got tired of seeing the ape rescue the lady from this or that critter for the 20th time while all the other humans were getting picked off a few at a time playing "lets chase the ape that stole the babe". Dammit, there just wasn't anything THERE. Nothing to see here, move along. Posted by: Cheese_Tensor on December 16, 2005 07:13 PM
As I've said in other comments, Brokeback also features Anne Hathaway's boobs. But of course. You can't have a gay themed movie without the requisite token fag hag. Posted by: on December 16, 2005 07:34 PM

John: I think Keith Olbermann is in that cowboy movie everyone's talking about around here. I can't think of anything else significant that involves him. Warden: I have to reveal what a huge dork I am about dumb internet posters and b-movie trivia to note that I am a) impressed Spurwing knows who Dino DeLaurentis is and that b) that I am shocked that over on Wuzzadem he proclaimed that the "original Japanese Godzilla with Raymond Burr" was cool and stuff... ... when everyone knows Raymond Burr was added in for the American version. I MEAN LIKE TOTALLY DUH, RIGHT? ... right?

I predict that Kong will operate along the lines of Jurassic Park (or to a lesser extent, The Matrix). JP had only the 61st best opening weekend; but through good reviews and word of mouth and a lot of repeat business it kicked some serious tail. Like JP, Kong has a well known director; but not a lot of built in buzz around the movie itself--the marketing was far less than, say, Lord of the Rings. If Kong is remotely as good as the reviews say it is, Universal will keep that thing in thae theaters as long as possible. The Matrix followed a similar track (though that initial appeal was in Keanu as the lead rather than the director) Posted by: Army Lawyer on December 16, 2005 11:19 PM
That's the second Real Doll reference from Dave in the last few days. Did he get an early Christmas present? Posted by: someone on December 17, 2005 12:44 AM
My friend and I always call it "Bareback Mountain." I often forget what the real name of the movie is. Anyway, I'm going to watch KK and not BBM. Posted by: Muslihoon on December 17, 2005 12:47 AM
Narnia was essentially sold out tonight when I took my daughter. Excellent movie. It didn't degrade into purely a kids flick, and it was very faithful to the novel. Posted by: Al on December 17, 2005 02:00 AM
Narnia was really good. I saw the preview for Kong at the time, thought Kong looked like it might be really great to see. Surprised it isn't do well in the box office yet. Posted by: Village Idiot on December 17, 2005 02:30 AM
Come on. Who in their right mind is going to fork over a bunch of dough to see one more remake of King Kong? Let's face it , Hollywood is too gay to make good cowboy movies anymore and too lazy to come up with new ideas. And that is why they're losing movie goers. Hollywood has always been derivative and almost totally dependant on novelists. Read the most recent issue of the magazine "City Journal"(in it they point out that in 1966 there were 38 Million movie goers and in 1967 it dropped to 17.8 million movie goers because the industry dropped their production code and statred making movies people didn't want to see). The movie business stinks because they have incompetent ceo's, many of whom a modern day robber barons(e.g. Eisner using his 25 year carreer mainly to stuff his own pockets with billions of dollars while stiffing the disney stockholders). I wonder how many decades of research it would take for lefties to figure out the maybe a movie involving a Christ Alegory might do well in the Christmas season? Wow what an intellectual breakthrough. No, no that's way too obvious. Do you really think the public wants a gay cowboy movie for their chistmas enjoyment? If you do, then you are a liberal. Posted by: pendleton on December 17, 2005 03:39 AM
This must be sending a chill down the spines of the people putting out the 'Poseiden Adventure' remake next year. (Not to be confused with the recent made for TV cheapie.) I must have seen that movie like a dozen times in the theater as a kid. They kept it on as a second feature for months and we kept watching every time we went for the new movie. I had a similar experience with 'Phantom of the Paradise.' I loved those movies then but have no interest in remakes no matter how perfectly done with modern technology and immense budgets. That well is tapped and I want something new. No matter how wonderfully done this Kong is, it remains a version of something I can play back in my head from memory. Both the 30s and 70s versions along with the assorted Japanese Kongs. I actually enjoyed the US 'Godzilla' some just to see how well they could do with putting an impossibly huge beast in a big city. On that front it was really cool. Kong just adds the complexities of doing it with a giant mammal instead. The thrill is gone. It doesn't help that the three human leads in this Kong aren't people who draw me to a movie. Jack Black should never have starring roles. He just gets annoying in anything above supporting roles. Adrien Brody is a good actor but I find someone that odd looking a bad choice for a romantic lead. And Naomi Watts' star value just evades me. Of the almost dozen movies I've seen her in I cannot recall a single bit of dialogue delivery that left a lasting impression on me. It's not that she inspires any especially negative feelings, it's just that she lacks that quality that makes a star. I suspect a lot of people around my age are in the same boat. Those young enough to lack much previous Kong experience are also lacking any great interest in the story and are a very jaded audience compared to movie goers in 1933. Posted by: epobirs on December 17, 2005 04:06 AM
I'm not at all surprised Kong isn't doing well. It's the third time they've made this particular movie. Godzilla may have sucked, but at least it wasn't a remake. I'm the sort of person who finds watching a movie twice extremely tedious, even if the movie's excellent. However good this version of King Kong may be, I don't see how the story is going to grab me when I already know it cold. Posted by: Rock Booker on December 17, 2005 04:08 AM
So...no sequel? Posted by: The Unabrewer on December 17, 2005 08:02 AM
I feel like I *should* want to see this movie, but somehow I don't. I guess I never quite "got" the original KK either, and never found it all that memorable. My whole feeling about KK is summed up in a Simpsons' parody from years ago, where Mr. Burns was the venal show promoter: Eager Reporters: So, Mr. Burns, what kinda show you got for us? "Who in their right mind is going to fork over a bunch of dough to see one more remake of King Kong? Let's face it , Hollywood is too gay to make good cowboy movies anymore and too lazy to come up with new ideas" I absolutely agree. If Hollywood came up with an original idea for a movie it would be a freak'n miracle. Posted by: docdave on December 17, 2005 02:37 PM

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
