Instapundit/Saint Andrew SmackdownHowever, I do agree with [several NRO writers, like Mark Levin] that Andrew has been consistently, pompously, and annoyingly moralistic and irritatingly unspecific. So if that's the chorus, well yes -- but it's a song that has a lot of notes, most of them struck by Andrew himself. And I'm irritated with him, not for the reason you might think -- because I disagree with Andrew -- but more the contrary, because every time I read one of his preening posts, I find my opposition to torture weakening in response, even though I've been consistently in opposition to torture since 2001 (and before). St. Andrew is a tough read. His amps definitely go to 11, and they're stuck on 11 90% of the time. Thanks to JB. posted by Ace at 02:28 AM
CommentsWouldn't stuck on 11 110% of the time be more appropriate? Posted by: rb on December 16, 2005 08:26 AM
I realize that most blogs on the far left think that type of comment is typical from Glenn because he's evil, but to anyone that has an open mind and reads him regularly that post has to be devastating. Posted by: Trevor on December 16, 2005 08:49 AM
"We've become dumber than the Soviets and in some cases just as cruel."--Andrew Sullivan. It's also interesting to compare Sullivan's coy, wink-wink posts about Kaus re Humpback Mountain and his own criticisms of The Passion of the Christ and Mel Gibson. Or for that matter, some of the things Sullivan criticized Gibson for: "I'm tired of people believing that Gibson is representing Catholicism. He isn't. He is a rebel against Catholicism, specifically the reformed, open, repentant Catholicism of the Second Vatican Council. Gibson doesn't recognize the authority of the current Pope...." Pretty ironic, in hindsight, no? More to the point, Sullivan called The Passion sadomasochist pornography. He doesn't like to see violence and torture (obviously), but if graphic violence were his only reason for disliking the film, then he should be similarly scathing of something like Saving Private Ryan. Sullivan also referred to the general approval of the Passion by conservative writers--Krauthammer being an exception--as evidence the "Popular Front" was intact. Good thing no one thought just maybe he was revealing more of himself than he intended and that his own reaction might come from a bigotry against conservative Catholics, eh? A Latin phrase but one not often used in the Mass comes to mind: ad hominem. Posted by: Nicholas Kronos on December 16, 2005 09:11 AM
Wouldn't stuck on 11 110% of the time be more appropriate? Naw - there's the 10% of the time that he's posting adulatory letters and the other 10% that he's soliciting donations (for bandwidth costs, natch). Posted by: geoff on December 16, 2005 09:12 AM
Damn you, rb, you beat me to it. Posted by: Brian B on December 16, 2005 09:35 AM
Someone posted here the best description of Sullivan I've heard; he views everything through the prism of his asshole. Everything comes around to the GAY with him. He was Kool and the Gang with Bush until the gay marriage thing; now the Bush Administration is the Spanish Inquisition in pin-stripe suits. He bleats like a gut shot goat about torture, yet he defines torture down until the deprivation of Swedish nurse sponge baths qualify. He's an unserious hack and a shill, and one of my favorite things about Ace's blog is the steady stream of ruthless takedowns. Posted by: UGAdawg on December 16, 2005 09:39 AM
Andrew Sullivan is one of the main reasons I am now opposed to gay marriage. I find that whenever I'm on the fence or wavering on an issue it simply comes down to who makes the better arguments, and Sullivan and most of the proponents of gay marriage bring nothing but shrill cries about homophobia. So, I definitely can see where Glenn is coming from. With torture, add Mr. Demogocic Self-Righteous McCain to Sullivan, and it's another issue where I'm pulled in the opposite direction from them simply by their whining. Several columns ago, Ann Coulter said "it isn't torture if Andrew Sullivan can go to New York City and buy it". I'm still laughing. Posted by: OregonMuse on December 16, 2005 10:18 AM
I'm on the fence or wavering on an issue it simply comes down to who makes the better arguments, and Sullivan and most of the proponents of gay marriage bring nothing but shrill cries about homophobia. It's funny how this works out. I would have characterized myself as much more moderate a few years ago, but for every moderate issue that I wanted to discuss, I got the same feedback. It became clear to me that the "reasons" for, say gay marriage, were after thoughts. Usually the whole movement was a step or two away from mobs with pitchforks - the reasoning was only for the pamphlets. Posted by: DeeDaGo on December 16, 2005 10:37 AM
To use a phrase coined by an acquaintance, Andrew specializes in being half-assed at full intensity. Posted by: Alex on December 16, 2005 10:57 AM

LOL Oregon Muse! Great line from Ann. Actually we don't even need to go to that extreme. Look at the less sensational stuff that women pay for every day. Electrolysis, anyone? Or a full-body wax which includes the naughty bits? Could be just the ticket for those furry Middle Easterners. Posted by: Annalucia on December 16, 2005 04:25 PM

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
