Juan Cole: Forbidding Car Traffic Makes Iraqi Vote Invalid

Kaus reads Juan Cole so that you don't have to:

The only way the vote will happen at all is that the US military has forbidden all vehicular traffic, so everyone has to walk for the next few days. This tactic prevents carbombings from disrupting the elections, but it is a desperate measure and not a sign of an election that could be certified as free and fair.

Yes, walking a mile or less to a polling place, or having to jump on a bus to get to one if you're in a farther-flung area, certainly makes the voting tainted.

It discriminates against... well, everyone. How can an election be fair if it discriminates against everyone?

It's not that they doubt the war can be won, and democracy brought to Iraq. It's that they're doubting their own doubts, and damnit, that just makes them more determined to force a defeat before victory can be achieved.

Ooops I Did It Again Update: I meant Juan Cole, not John Cole of Balloon-Juice. As the kids say, "My bad."

Thanks for the correction.

Uh, I know John Cole's had his anti-conservative meltdown moments, but don't you mean Juan Cole?

Meanwhile, looks like Zarqawi's stealing your schtick.

You mean they weren't hand delivering ballots to registered voters? Fascists.

Posted by: Dave S on December 15, 2005 01:50 PM

So all human elections prior to the invention of the internal combuston engine are invalid too? That completely sucks.

I was wondering how the leftist/liberals were going to dismiss the election.

But this...this is totally unexpected. It just goes to show you, no matter how hard you try you can't think like a moonbat.

Posted by: Timmy in the Well on December 15, 2005 02:04 PM

Yeah...

It sort of reminds me of people whining that filtering porn out of library computers violates the first amendment rights of the patrons. That sort of implies that nobody EVER had first amendment rights until internet porn was invented.

Posted by: Dave S on December 15, 2005 02:05 PM

let's watch the lefties strain a muscle trying to put a negative spin on the election...

Posted by: brak on December 15, 2005 02:05 PM

Timmy said "Think" and "Moonbat" in the same sentence. Ah, the innocence of youth....

Posted by: Brian B on December 15, 2005 02:12 PM

Good ol' Rush.
He just said, "The Democrats lose another election...the Iraqi election...they couldn't stop it."

That man is worth every penny he earns.

I bet we can find this guy, or someone like him, decrying a the proposed requirement that voters actually identify themselves.

Imagine, trying to keep people from voting more than once, or from getting blown up whilst voting.

Posted by: joeindc44 on December 15, 2005 02:26 PM

By this reasoning, we should throw out every single vote ever to be cast in New York City. Fine by me.

Posted by: ken on December 15, 2005 03:16 PM

I hope someone is archiving "Informed Comment"; it will be useful in the future to illustrate just how spectacularly wrong an American academic can be.

The fact that, oh, 15 million people still managed to vote won't matter to Cole.

Posted by: The Colossus on December 15, 2005 03:17 PM

Heck next they're gonna start banning explosive vests - this election simply cannot be described as free or fair! No! It can't I tell you! It can't!! Don't you dare say otherwise - I say no one caan call this election free and fair! Why is no one listening to meeee?????

Posted by: Scott on December 15, 2005 03:20 PM

Seeing that the number of cars in Iraq increased tenfold after our liberation, his statement makes even less sense.

Posted by: roc ingersol on December 15, 2005 04:39 PM

Democrats will complain if turnouts are too low, they'll complain if they're too high. Who knows what the ideal Goldilocks turnout for them is?

Remember Ohio 2004? First the Democrats spend months registering people and getting out the vote, then they actually COMPLAIN when the poll lines are so long from the record turn outs, to the point they start accusing Republicans of somehow rigging the polls for this to happen. Their get-out-the-vote efforts and even Democrats moving to Ohio so they can vote in a swing state played no role, it had to be a Republican conspiracy.

Posted by: Moonbat_One on December 15, 2005 07:01 PM

Well said. I totally agree with you. The point you are making here does make sense.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
