Upcoming NYT Piece: Conservative Blogs Out-Influence Liberal Ones

Good to know:

In an argument sure to be challenged in certain sectors of the blogosphere, a story in The New York Times magazine coming up this Sunday declares that conservative blogs continue to best liberal blogs in political and electoral influence.

The title of the piece by Michael Crowley in the magazine’s 5th Annual Year in Ideas cover package says it all: “Conservative Blogs Are More Effective.”

Why are they more effective? Certainly Kos and King of All Open Threads Atrios have bigger numbers than even Lord Instapundit. Here's one theory put forth by the piece:

But he explains that “Democrats say there’s a key difference between liberals and conservatives online. Liberals use the Web to air ideas and vent grievances with one another, often ripping into Democratic leaders….Conservatives, by contrast, skillfully use the Web to provide maximum benefit for their issues and candidates.”

Ah. They engage in thoughtful, open debate and criticize their leaders, whereas we all just push the party line. Certainly there haven't been any major debates between bloggers over Terri Shiavo or Harriet Miers, or no criticism of Bush & Co. for overspending, Plamegate, torture, the mismanagement of the war, etc.

Conservates are just "poor, uneducated, and easily led," as the Washington Post once famously announced.

It's the all-purpose generic universal explanation for liberal failure.

Here's a competing theory: Unlike the liberal bloggers and readers, conservative bloggers and blog-readers are not, as a rule, diagnosable paranoid schizophrenics and general lunatics.

Conservative bloggers tend to discuss live, real issues. They take reasonable positions, certainly mainstream among conservatives, and reasonable even to moderates. (Even if moderates don't agree with this or that, it's not as if the position is simply absurd.)

Liberal bloggers tend to be obsessed with conspiracy theories, criminal investigations unlikely to result in convictions (and unrelated to actual policy debate, in any event), and general moonbattery. The basic dynamic of the sinestrosphere is everyone attempting to out-crazy each other, and, last time I checked, it's a million-way tie for first place.

It All Depends On Whose Gore Is Being Oxed Update: Strange Women Lying In Ponds offers:

The reason why conservative bloggers are more effective is that we don't have the MSM to count on to toe the party line. Having the MSM as a mouthpiece for the Democratic Party allows the left-wing bloggers more freedom to play to the bleacher seats. Meanwhile, we conservatives (and libertarians) are forced to hone our message in order to cut through the crap of MSM bias.

The Mary Mapes situation is a perfect example.

Yep, that's a good point. We're trying to drag the media from the soft left to the center, whereas they're trying to drag it to the hard left.

PS: Every vote Ace of Spades recieves makes Bill cry one delicious tear.

Couldn't have said it better myself! Bravo.

I was gonna say conservatives tend to use the words "fuckity fucking pigfucking fucker fuckers" to flesh out points less, and this makes arguments more amenable to cross-pollination with the MSM. But yeah, that too.

Precisely. It's the same shit they trot out to explain why they lose elections. "It's not that conservative ideas are more persuasive than ours; conservatives are simply better organized."

That's also why they have such a hard-on for Rove. The more diabolically ingenious they can make him out to be, the less they have to question the appeal of their policies to the general population.

Looking forward to reading the piece, though. Sounds like Mary Mapes lite.

Well, I guess that proves Bill doesn't read *my* blog. . .

Baby, the article kinda said it, but I just think that conservatives generally have a cohesive message while democrats don't really stand FOR anything, just AGAINST what the conservatives stand for.

When there's disagreement amongst conservatives, there is, as you said, more ordered debate, but by and large, most conservatives agree with each other on the big things.

When your group has nothing that it really steadfastly stands for as a group, it's hard to convince other people to stand with you in that group; therefore, you really have a hard time influencing.

Posted by: Bohemian on December 9, 2005 01:52 PM

Ken Starr, don't be too hard on the Left for their obsession with "criminal investigations unlikely to result in convictions."

After all, the convictions of 15 people on 45 felony counts that you obtained sets a very high standard. It's hard for them to keep up, except in their fevered imaginations.

SWLiP,

Exactly. The more right-leaning blogs essentially make up for the vacuum in the MSM of their ideas. The lefty ones have to become more extreme to differentiate themselves from the stuff you can get on MSNBC every day.

Logic > Emotion.

Pretty much how I see it.

I JUST got into a "debate" about this. The "other" said that he didn't need facts/figures/supporting evidence because what he was doing was venting. Ah - see, there is no point in debating with 'em.

THAT HITS THE NAIL RIGHT ON THE HEAD.

There are two kinds of Republicans: greedy, selfish, obscenely wealthy fatcat warmongers who rule the world, and toothless beer-swilling NASCAR fans. The latter vote Republican only because the former have convinced them that's what Jesus wants them to do.

And if you don't think lefties really and truly believe the above, you don't hang out much on lefty blogs. I don't just mean DU; the academic blogs are the worst. For people who are supposed to be so smart (I know, I know), they have an amazingly simplistic view of just about everything. It doesn't hold up to any kind of examination, but they aren't big on introspection. This is why they're stunned and amazed every time they lose an election. They think, "but we told those stupid hillbillies that Democrats would give them free stuff! Do they really hate gays enough to turn down free stuff? It's not natural!"

So lefties spend a lot of time talking about "voting against self-interest" and "getting the message out" -- i.e. getting it across to those stupid rednecks (into which they somehow manage to lump a great deal of the American middle class) that IF YOU VOTE FOR US WE WILL GIVE YOU FREE STUFF! (You moron!). If only they can pound that through enough thick skulls, it'll be the Age of Aquarius again.

Posted by: S. Weasel on December 9, 2005 05:06 PM

I am now incapable of seeing the words "Age of Aquarius" without reliving the closing credits of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin."

Topless Paul Rudd... spicy.

Posted by: Pompous on December 9, 2005 05:13 PM

I should just cut and paste Weasel's comment into a file on my desktop for later rebuttals to lefties. :)

Posted by: Sue Dohnim on December 9, 2005 05:13 PM

"...air ideas and vent differences."? What kind of crap is that? The last real idea a lefty had was back in the stone ages when one said to another, "We're bigger and smarter than Grog over there, so we're gonna tell him what he can and can't do with his property, and he has to pay us a gazillion cat teeth in taxes, and then he's gonna be so poor he'll have to come to us for anything he needs!

And they haven't changed a bit since then, except to become towering wimps and sorry peace-at-any-price no-brain chumps. So add "cowards" to the already ingrained "liars" and "thieves" monikers.

Posted by: on December 9, 2005 06:45 PM

S. Weasel: That is the result of spending to much time with Marx and friends - everything, and I mean everything, is reduced down to money, economics. If you were to tell them that "Man does not live by bread alone," they would make it a point to add some cheese. They just don't get that some people may value something higher than money.

And then to top it off they claim that they are truly spiritual and the right is just interested in crass materialism.

It's like leftism is a mental disorder, or something.

Posted by: Mikey on December 9, 2005 07:29 PM

Good words, S. Weasel.

The bit about voting against self-interest is the choicest bit of tripe in the Democrat Clusterfuck of Logic.
Voting is all about self-interest. I vote the way I want things to go. I vote for the guy who represents my views the most accurately.

If you vote against self-interest, why fucking bother?

You know who's been voting against their own self-interest for decades? Urban minorities.

And look where its gotten them.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
