Bush Links December 7, 1941 With 9/11

Chris Matthews Screams That There Were No "Close Operational Ties" Between Osama Bin Ladin and Hirohito

Found on Free Republic:

Today we mark the anniversary of a fateful day in American history. On December the 7th, 1941, our peaceful nation awoke to an attack plotted in secret and executed without mercy. The strike on Pearl Harbor was the start of a long war for America — a massive struggle against those who attacked us and those who shared their destructive ambitions.

Fortunately for all of us, a great generation of Americans was more than equal to the challenge. Our nation pulled together and despite setbacks and battlefield defeats, we did not waver in freedom's cause.

With courage and determination, we won a war on two fronts: We liberated millions, we aided the rise of democracy in Europe and Asia, we watched enemies become allies, and we laid the foundation of peace for generations.

On September the 11th, 2001, our nation awoke to another sudden attack. In the space of just 102 minutes more Americans were killed than we lost at Pearl Harbor. Like generations before us, we accepted new responsibilities, and we confronted new dangers with firm resolve.

Like generations before us, we're taking the fight to those who attacked us — and those who share their murderous vision for future attacks. Like generations before us, we've faced setbacks on the path to victory — yet we will fight this war without wavering. And like the generations before us, we will prevail.

technically most Americans were already awake. it was like, 1-something in the afternoon in DC.

is that nit-picking? am I killing this thread?

Posted by: Dave in Texas on December 7, 2005 04:19 PM

It was more like 10am.

Posted by: Bart on December 7, 2005 04:24 PM

really? it was just before 8 at Pearl. that's what, 4 hours from the central tz. Even if there was no daylight savings time back then, it'd have been noon in DC

well, I thought the japanese embassy dude in Tora Tora Tora that couldn't type worth a damn was supposed to deliver the last part of the ultimatum to Secretary Hull before 1pm, but maybe that was some hollywood license.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on December 7, 2005 04:35 PM

You're right, DiT. I was thinking 9/11.

Maybe "awoke" is used metaphorically?

Posted by: Bart on December 7, 2005 04:45 PM

ah, my bad, I did not make that clear!

Posted by: Dave in Texas on December 7, 2005 04:48 PM

9/11 was about 9:30. I remember because I was getting on a commuter flight from Boston to NY which obviously never left.

Posted by: JackStraw on December 7, 2005 04:58 PM

When I first glanced at that headline, I thought it said that there were no operational ties between Osama bin Ladin and Benihana.

Which is probably true. Because if there were, the headchoppers would have had much better quality knives...

Did we even have time zones back in '41?

Posted by: kelly on December 7, 2005 05:15 PM

Time zones were established by the railroads so that trains could run on time and be "apparently" on time as the sun moved across the sky.

Daylight savings time, though, I think was established during WWii for essentially the same reason.

Yes, 1941, which 64 years ago was the current year.

Posted by: Chris Matthews on December 7, 2005 05:37 PM

Actually time zones were created after the Civil War in order that the White House was always an hour ahead of the defeated centrally located Southerners. Daylight savings created so Eisenhower could play more golf.

Posted by: Cliff Claven on December 7, 2005 05:41 PM

Time zones were created by the Chinese, because they got tired of waking up when it's dark and sleeping when it's light. As if standing upside down all the time weren't bad enough.

Posted by: on December 7, 2005 05:45 PM

China only has one time zone, but it should have 2 or 3 if not more.

BTW, I wonder why the Democrats weren't screaming about our troops fighting Vichy French troops in 1942...wasn't it Japan that attacked us?

USA lost thousands of men in Operation Torch to the French...

Posted by: Aaron on December 7, 2005 09:20 PM

so of course this excuses the US regime for interning 1000's of yellow people in concentration camps?

Posted by: LibRAl on December 7, 2005 11:06 PM

Pretty much.

Posted by: Knemon on December 8, 2005 12:51 AM

I mean, in retrospect, sure, we shouldn't have done that.

Does it put us on the same level as the Axis?
mmmmmmNO.

Posted by: Knemon on December 8, 2005 12:53 AM

Knemon, I'm not entire sure that, given the situation at the time, interning the people of Japanese descent wasn't justified. Remember, there were also indications that there were sabotage units amongst the Nissie. Like today, intelligence can be wrong and, like today, after a major hit on US soil, people weren't willing to bet US lives. Another problem was the Nissie themselves - none were out there condeming the Japanese Imperialism in the newspapers, etc. Most Americans had no idea of which way the Nissie would jump after Pearl Harbor. HISTORY tells us they were loyal citizens, but that's 20-20 hindsight.

Posted by: rabidfox on December 8, 2005 10:35 AM

I guess. That's what I mean by "in retrospect."

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.

Oof. Reviewers do not like Scary Movie 6. The criticism I keep hearing is that the movie mistakes a reference for an actual joke. The movie (they say) keeps Key Jangling a reference to another movie (or some other pop culture ephemera) and you expect there to be a joke but nope, the Key Jangle was the joke. Other reviewers say that the promise that "no lines will be uncrossed" is a fake-out, and that the movie is bland and inoffensively corporate.
Whoops! I posted about Dan Goldman losing the NY congressional primary. He might do that, but it won't be tonight -- the primary isn't held until June 23.
One race to keep an eye on: the Levi's heir nepo baby and egregious "Designated Liar" Dan Goldman -- one of the Democrats from a safe district Democrats send out to spread their most indefensible lies -- may actually lose his lower Manhattan/Brooklyn set due to, get this, antisemitism in the Democrat primary electorate.
Antisemitism? In the anti-Nazi Democrat Party? Sounds crazy, I know, but apparently the anti-Nazi Party wants to eliminate Jews.

Democrat Senator Rueben Gallego, who served his wife with divorce papers when she was nine months pregnant so that he could marry his side-piece, counsels us that we should not judge Graham Platner for his infidelity because these things are personal matters, Racists:

Sahil Kapur
@sahilkapur

Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., on Platner: "We know that Graham has lived not your typical political experience. He's been very clear and open with his wife, and they worked through whatever they worked through. At the end of the day, this man has had 60 more town halls than Susan Collins has. He's winning the polls, he's willing to accept that he has grown as a person, and I think we should accept that."

Gallego says the drip-drip of revelations won't harm Platner's campaign.

"I think you guys are all in a bubble here right now. The drip, drip that's actually happening is Americans are really, really hurt the fact that gas is still high, food is still high, they can't buy a home, you can't afford rent. They're not going to care about text messages and everything else like that that happened years ago, especially when it was worked out between spouses."

I like that he says that it's okay that Graham Platner sexted 12 different women within months of marrying the woman to sponge off her because he wasn't then "living a political life" -- the clear meaning being, "We all cheat, we just don't cheat when we're running for office, and he didn't know he was running for office when he was sending dicpics to half the women he ran into."
Except he was running: His own wife turned the sexts over to his campaign.
And obviously Reuben Gallego didn't let his "political life" get in the way of his extramarital dating life:
