It's Official: CIA Asks For Criminal Investigation Into Leak

Here's the comically predictable part: the Democrats want this investigation, into a a specific leak in 2005, to also include the "twisting of intelligence" in 2002 and the "outing" of husband-outed soccer mom Valerie Plame in 2003.

Democrats, meanwhile, said that if Republicans wanted to pursue an inquiry, it should go beyond any leak related to secret detention facilities and cover a range of other issues that Democrats say are ripe for investigation.

"That includes the possible manipulation of prewar intelligence on Iraq, and the disclosure for political purposes of classified information involving the identity of the C.I.A. officer," said the House minority leader, Representative Nancy Pelosi of California.

Oh, and remember that New York Times piece, which revealed the CIA's secret air fleet? Apparently that information might have been used in conjunction with the WaPo leak to ID the countries helping us imprison terrorists:

The Post, citing a "request of senior U.S. officials," did not identify the Eastern European countries. But the mention of Eastern Europe stirred anxiety at the intelligence agency, particularly after Human Rights Watch, a group that has opposed American detention policies, issued a statement on Monday saying its research had tracked C.I.A. aircraft in 2003 and 2004 making flights from Afghanistan to remote airfields in Poland and Romania. The group said aircraft used in the flights had been previously flown by the C.I.A. for prisoner transport.

Investigate that leak too. Put the journalists under oath and force them to reveal their criminal sources.

Shhhh, guys, forget this whole leaked covert op thingy, CNN is gonna report - any minute now - that they learned of this on Ronald Reagan's deathbed. I think all us neo-cons can see that this is simply gonna be eggs on our face if we press this.

I have it on great authority that every leadership position in the GOP gave the Wash Post and NYT's this information on background in order to support Kilgore's campaign.

Joe, I don't know if you realize that Berry Princess has been operating under very deep cover, and you're outing of her is a very serious offense.

Posted by: DB on November 9, 2005 01:08 PM

Gargamel told me this in the Green Room, I was shocked to learn it.

No, I don't remember the NYT piece, but unless it's a few years old, how could it have anything to do with Human Rights Watch ID of planes in 2003 and 2004?

Probably no connection. The carriers used by the CIA have been detected at least since the 80s, when you could read about the carriers used during Iran-contra even before the investigation. It's not easy to keep a secret about planes flying into airports...

Posted by: tubino on November 9, 2005 03:13 PM

Yes, I do remember the NY Times piece. I also remember that the paper received clearance from the CIA before publishing the story. Somehow that part always gets left out.

Posted by: Chris on November 9, 2005 03:25 PM

How are we doing on that investigation into the allegations that Chalabi leaked info about CODES being BROKEN to our Iranian enemies in the Axis of Evil?

Oh, he's meeting with members of the Bush admin TODAY? Will he be interviewed by the FBI? Wearing handcuffs? No?

Wake me up when you guys OR this administration gets serious about security risks, instead of hosting them for talks, or maintaining their security clearances.

Posted by: tubino on November 9, 2005 03:31 PM

Just call me Johnny One-Note.

This entire campaign of mine has been centered around one theme: Republicans are crooks and liars.

I read the same 5 lefty blogs all day long and steal all their ideas, arguments, and quotes. Then, I regurgitate it back to the dunces at AoS.

Watergate. Iran-Contra-gate. Plamegate.
National Guard-gate. Whatever-gate.

I'll keep weaving in all the loony conspiracies, rumors, and investigations against the Republicans into my many, many boring, repetitive, humourless, dry, insipid, baseless, and contrived posts.

Soon, you'll realize what I already know. Republicans are bad. Very bad.

Posted by: Toobeano on November 9, 2005 03:39 PM

I also remember that the paper received clearance from the CIA before publishing the story.

Not quite correct - the CIA had 'no comment' when the story was submitted, probably because the NYT compiled the story from non-classified sources.

Posted by: geoff on November 9, 2005 03:52 PM

So was the NYT story so far back in time that it could have been a source for 2003 HRW reports, as Ace says?

Posted by: sockpuppet on November 9, 2005 03:58 PM

Great read. How bush lets his administration get accused of manufacturing information is a mystery. Seems anyone with have a brain and an interest in the facts would draw a completely different conclusion.

Posted by: JackStraw on November 9, 2005 05:08 PM

Tubino,

Were you "serious" about security risks when Clinton was selling out national secrets to the chinese for campaign contributions? Somehow, I doubt it.

Were you serious when Sandy Bergler was stealing and destroying classified materials to protect the previous admin? Somehow I doubt it.

When did the left ever care about the military and intelligence operations in the last 30 years - aside from using them as the boogeyman and doing everything they could to dismantle same? Your (the left's) sudden embrace of american intelligence and the military fools no one. That is why, no matter what histrionics the left displays, no one takes the Dems seriously on national security.

When the left establishes a true history of seriousness on national security issues (rather than partisan emphasis that changes daily for political purposes), American might take democrats seriously on issues involving national security. Until then, they shouldn't, they don't, and they won't.

Posted by: on November 9, 2005 05:25 PM

Hey hey hey.
Who's the self-righteous liberal liar, here?

That's right. Se Moi.
So I ask the questions, and you dunces try to answer them. Got it?

I know nothing of all those alleged crimes by democrats. Probably all part of a smear campaign by the Right and have not a kernel of truth.

Only MY charges of high crimes and misdemeanors are important and relevant. All that crap about Sandy Berger and the Chinese is ancient history. Let's stick with the here and now: Plamegate, Iran-Contra, and Watergate.

The Democrats are as pure as the driven snow. Therefore I can, with good conscience, claim I'm only after truth, justice, and the American way. Even though I'm only interested in spinning for my liberal, socialist comrades in America.

When George Soros is president of the United States, he will make Canadia the 51st state in the union. And my hometown of Toronto will be the new capital of the nation.

Remember, my arrogance is only exceeded by my stupidity. So...

Don't mess with Canadia!

Hey Toobeano

Every right wing blog has someone doing what you do, and it gets old really fast. The only people saying things like Bush lied and people died anymore are idiot right wingers who think they've stumbled onto comedy gold. Get a fresh act.

Posted by: Chris on November 9, 2005 07:55 PM

Hey Chris, what's the deal-i-o?
We're on the same side, remember?

Posted by: Toobeano on November 9, 2005 08:10 PM

The only people saying things like Bush lied and people died anymore are idiot right wingers

Not from where we're sitting. We just got a flood of Bush-Lied/People-Died types in the last couple of weeks. And they were nowhere near the right. Even Tubino flirts with it. I'm willing to concede that there are more reasonable attitudes among the left, but they're buried in the political jingoism of the Kos-Kids.

Posted by: geoff on November 9, 2005 08:48 PM

Sh*t, go ahead and let the U.N. set up their own internet (in their accustomed Private Idaho). They are setting up their own radio broadcast division now.

We'll just set up our own CIA. Shut the old one down. Fire every last gall dang one of those turds. We couldn't possibly do it any worse.

Forty four billion per annum.

Posted by: Elmo on November 9, 2005 09:44 PM

The only people saying things like Bush lied and people died anymore are idiot right wingers

Then there's the old 'repeat a lie often enough' method, and just look at the results:

New NBC poll just out says 57% think BUSH intentionally misled Americans in the run up to the Iraq war.

[From a commenter at John Cole's site, H/T to Jeff Goldstein]

Posted by: geoff on November 9, 2005 10:03 PM

Every news report for 3 years says the same thing, that, basically Bush lied, and then they sample a hefty extra 10% democrat to get that poll.

Posted by: joeindc44 on November 10, 2005 01:19 AM

Why isnt there a investigation into clintons dirty dealing what about all of clintons dirty dealings?

Posted by: spurwing plover on November 10, 2005 08:14 AM

There were Clinton investigations, and there were indictments and there were convictions. You may not have heard about them because they didn't hurt Bush.

Posted by: joeindc44 on November 10, 2005 09:55 AM

I was referring specifically to the phrase "Bush lied, people died." I realize a lot of people are accusing Bush of lying, but I see that phrase used in a weak attempt at sarcasm way more than it's used by lefties, on a scale of about 20:1.

Posted by: Chris on November 10, 2005 11:56 AM

Gee, Chris, apparently you don't get out much.
From bumper stickers to hand-held signs, that lil' slogan is all around.
Perhaps here in 'cyberspace' the lefties have taken it to a new level, changed the wording perhaps, but the message is still the same.
And of course, as mentioned above, the left-leaning polls (redundant redundant) echo that.

Tucker Carlson claims that it's weird that Ted Cruz is interested in the massacre of Christians by Nigerian Muslims, because he has "no track record of being interested in Christians," then blows off the massacre of Christians by Nigerian Muslims, saying it might or might not be a real concern
Tucker Carlson enjoys using the left-wing tactic of "Tactical Ignorance" to avoid taking positions on topics. Is Hamas really a terrorist organization? Tucker can't say. He hasn't looked into it enough, but "it seems like a political organization to me." Are Muslims slaughtering Christians in Nigeria? Again, Tucker just doesn't know. He hasn't examined the evidence yet. He knows every Palestinian Christian who said he was blocked from visiting holy sites in Bethlehem, but he just hasn't had the time to look into the mass slaughter of Christians in Nigeria that has been going on since (checks watch) 2009. He doesn't know, so he can't offer an opinion. Wouldn't be prudent, you know? Don't rush him! He'll sift through the evidence at some point in the future and render an opinion sometime around 2044.
Of course, if you need an opinion on Jewish Perfidy, he has all the facts at his fingertips and can give you a fully informed opinion pronto. Say, have you ever heard of the USS Liberty incident...?
You'd think that the main issue for Tucker Carlson, who pretends to be so deeply concerned about Palestinian Christians being bullied by Jews in Israel (supposedly), would be the massacre of 185,000 Christians in Nigeria itself. But no, his main problem is that Ted Cruz is talking about it, "who has no track record of being interested in Christians at all." And then he just shrugs as to whether this is even a real issue or not.
Whatever we do we must never "divide the right," huh?
Tucker is attacking Ted Cruz for bringing the issue up because he's acting as an apologist for Jihadism, and he can't cleanly admit that Jihadists are killing any Christians, anywhere. There is no daylight between him and CAIR at this point.
One might conclude that Tucker Carlson himself isn't interested in the plight of Christians -- except as they can be used as a cudgel to attack Jews.
Just gonna ask an Interesting Question myself -- why is it that Tucker Carlson's arguments all track with those shit out by Qatarian propaganda agents and the far left? That if Jews crush an ant underfoot it is worldwide news, but when Muslims slaughter Christians it elicits not even a vigorous shrug?
Garth Merenghi is interviewed by the only man who can fathom his ineffable brilliance -- Garth Merenghi

Now that's some Merenghian prose.
Garth Merenghi on the writer's craft

Greetings, Traveler. If you still have not experienced Garth Merenghi -- Author, Dream-weaver, Visionary, plus Actor -- the six episodes of his Darkplace are still available on YouTube and supposedly upscaled to HD. (Viewing it now, it doesn't appeared upscaled for shit.)
I think the second episode, "Hell Hath Fury," is the best by a good margin. Try to at least watch through to that one. It's Mereghi's incisive but nuanced take on sexism.

Schmoll: 53% of New Jersey likely voters say their neighbors are voting for Ciattarelli, while 47% say the cheater/grifter Mikie Sherrill
The "who do you think your neighbors are voting for" question is designed to avoid the Shy Tory problem, wherein conservative people lie to schmollsters because they don't want to go on record with a likely left-winger telling them who they're really voting for. So instead the question is who do you think your neighbors are voting for, so people can talk about who they themselves support without actually having to admit it to a left-wing rando stranger recording their answers on the phone.

Interesting football history: How the forward pass was created in response to the nineteen -- 19! -- people killed playing football in 1905 alone
The original rules of football did not allow forward passes. The ball was primarily advanced by running, with blockers forming lines with interlocked arms and just smashing into the similarly-interlocked defensive lines. It was basically Greek hoplite spear formations but with a semi-spherical ball. As calls to ban the sport entirely grew, some looked for ways to de-emphasize mass charges as the primary means of advancing the ball, and some specifically championed allowing a passer to throw the ball forward.
