Rumors Fly: Cheney To Resign, Condi To Be Elevated To Veep

Supposedly all because of the eternally-impending indictment against Scooter Libby, his close aid.

The rumor spread so fast that some Republicans by late morning were already drawing up reasons why Rice couldn't get the job or run for president in 2008.

"Isn't she pro-choice?" asked a key Senate Republican aide. Many White House insiders, however, said the Post story and reports that the investigation was coming to a close had officials instead more focused on who would be dragged into the affair and if top aides would be indicted and forced to resign.

Fun to kibbitz about, but none of it will happen. I don't even think that Libby will be indicted. Maybe he'll cop to some lesser plea before a bill of indictment is prepared.

On the other hand, I guess Dick Morris is praying it happens so he can sell more books.

Thanks to Jason for the fun rumor of the week.

Cheney resigning is a democrat wet dream. Ain't gonna happen.

Sorry, buddy. But this Democrat's wet dreams consist of big macs, Ronald McDonald and a big ol' vat of jello.

Yeah, baby...

Hell, I had this theory *years* ago. So it's not exactly news.

I always figured that the only way for Rice to be a serious 2008 threat (that is, if she WANTED to be one) was to have her replace Cheney around the 2006 midterms. This way, she not only raises her profile (not to mention the whole PC kudos of having a black female *Republican* Veep), but she also can take a stab at doing the one thing she absolutely needs to do if she ever hopes to be a serious candidate for POTUS-- and that's work domestic policy (not to mention start working politics, period).

As it stands now, Rice will never be able to run and win for POTUS, because she has zero constituency, and no true executive experience. The best way for her to get "blessed" would be for Bush to get her in the Veep slot.

Ace, one other thing to keep in mind here: remember that this is a very unusual, near-unique situation with Cheney. Bush has no heir apparent, he's chosen no successor. He dabbled with Frist a bit, but that never worked out. I figured Bush would wait until after the mid-terms to settle on one, but what if he doesn't? What if he looks around and sees nothing but political trouble, and decides to pull something dramatic like this *before* the mid-terms?

And you and I know that Cheney is both the consumate professional AND politician to be willing, even eager, to step aside if it helps the party (especially since he's not willing to run himself, dammit).

Anyway, like you, I don't expect any indictments, and Plamegate will go the way of every other half-assed -gate and end up as a Wikipedia footnote.

Still, I wouldn't be *entirely* surprised if Bush tried a political Hail Mary at some point in the next six months. And something like this is up that alley.

Oh, and GO RUDY!

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

The only way Cheney's resigning is his health (which is, mind you, iffy). But at this point, Rice being associated with Bush would torpedo her candidacy... Which would, IMO, be a good thing.

Sure...Jason gets all the thanks for the tip, when I plugged the story (and my own blog entry on it) in your comments earlier this evening.

And I was so close to hitting that paypal button....

Cheney resigning is a democrat wet dream.

I would think its their worst nightmare if Condi gets the nod. That gives her 3 years to collect VP creds and the inside track in 08'.

Condi vs Hillary? Hillary loses.

Rice being associated with Bush

Newsflash: she's SecState
Newsflash: Bush picked her

Posted by: on October 19, 2005 02:57 AM

This the strategy the dems should have used with Gore. They shuld have gotten Clinton to resign over the impeachment ala Nixon. Gore moves to VP and is a near shoo in for president in 2000.

If there had been any integrity among the Senate dems, they would have still been in the White House at least until 2004. Probably until 2008, because after 9-11, the country would have been reluctant to change presidents in mid stream of the WOT. (Assuming there was a WOT)

Posted by: Ed Poinsett on October 19, 2005 08:25 AM

Guys, guys. Don't remember the party line, if Gore were president, there would have been no 9/11 because he would have been down on the floor swaying and praying with them.

Posted by: tefta on October 19, 2005 10:12 AM

NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN.

The left and their lackeys in the media haven't realized yet what everyone else figured out a while ago, no crime was comitted. Unless someone was dumb enough to lie in front of the grand jury this thing is going to fizzle out. Even serial liar Joe Wilson understood how perjury works and told a different story under oath than to the NYT.

As far as Condi goes, she has no interest in political office. Bush may consider her if something happened to Cheney healthwise. However, I think she would decline and ask him to consider someone else. Personally, I am over 35 years of age and a natural born U.S. citizen so I should be on the list somewhere. Maybe not near the top but somewhere. Plus I'm already at an undisclosed location so it would be cost effective.

Posted by: LargeBill on October 19, 2005 10:23 AM

Condi sounded pretty emphatic on the Sunday political shows when she said that running for president is 'not what she wants to do with her life. Not going to run. Don't want to be president, etc.'

I love it! Some of the chief lackeys in the media have had to testify in the case, knucklehead! Miller is up to her Scooter (or is it her Pinch?) in testimony discrepancies.

In the gaggle this morning Scottie tried to dodge the Tom DeFrank article, but couldn't point to anything in particular. In case you missed it, DeFrank indicates that the President was lying, and so was Rove. If you're looking for breathless teen screaming, you'll have to wait for the parody of me. Suffice it to say that regime change is a possibility. :)

"It's f**king f**ked."
-- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.

@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:
spidermanthreatormenace.jpg

That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time.
I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
