Goldstein v. Goldberg

Interesting essay, knocking Goldberg for 1) joining the MSM in rumormongering and 2) blaming "the blogosphere" for joining in said rumormongering, when, in point of fact, it was largely the Corner itself going bananas over these reports.

(PS, I'm quite sure I have a post reporting these rumors, too, but only one or two. I didn not, as Golstein charges of the Cornerites, "lose my shit.")

I think Goldberg was compromised on this early, because he made some sort of snarky remark about the Superdome being the Thunderdome, and was taken to task by the "How dare you!" crowd. Thereafter, he (and some of the other Cornerites, I guess) had to prove his/their empathy by talking about how terribly terribly horribly terrible all of this was. He wasn't really in a position to start debunking.

The other day I accused the media of racism in being so credulous about reports of black folks becoming Reavers from Firefly in just a few days of chaos. I was only half-serious; I was mostly just using their tactics against them.

But I don't think they regurgitated these reports out of racism, or at least not out of conscious racism. More like "helpful liberal racism," the bestest racism in the world. By claiming that New Orleans was, uhhh, the new Bartertown (it's now safe to use Mad Max analogies), reporters thought they were helping po' blacks. By exaggerating the problem, they thought they were doing the Lord's Work in setting the table for a Big Time Governmnet Solution. The more tragedy, mayhem, and baby-rapin' they reported, the bigger the government payout in the following months, and the sooner the end to black poverty, because, you know, nothing cures black poverty faster than Big Government Checks.

Hey. Give the Great Society some time. It hasn't even been forty years.

The reporters and MSM as a whole seem to have gotten their wish-- there will be money poured into New Orleans, much of it in the form of non-competive contracts, which I'm sure will pose no problems in squeaky-clean politically-hyegenic Louisiana.

There's a backlash brewing against that, but the forces in favor of just spending willy-nilly are too strong. I trust that George W. Bush will continue to demonstrate his compassion by spending our money like a drunken sailor.

You must be mistaken. We Jews never fight amongst ourselves.

Kinda off topic, but not really since you mention free spending at the end.

Red State has portions of a column by Novak where he outlines a possible resurgence of fiscally conservative Republicans.

I am proud to say two are my two SC Senators - Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham.

I have given Lindsey Graham a lot of flak for his "Gang of 14" role and being McCain's puppet, but if he and the rest of the this new coalition can pull this off (along with getting another Thomas or Scalia on the SCOTUS), all will be forgiven.

It's pretty funny when you think about it: That anybody would believe these stories that people would resort to cannabalism after only a couple of days allegedly without food. You would have to be willing to murder someone. One of the 10,000 dead bodies floating by would not do. Must be fresh meat. And then you would have to be willing to eat it raw. Human sushi. No extra crispy.

If you are American, well, lucky for you! You see, in Belgium we don't have that pesky First Amendment thing, meaning that there are actual laws prohibiting certain speech, including speech that incites hatred against people for their nationality... So why not send an e-mail here if you feel offended: the center for equality of opportunity and fighting racism, the official government sponsored institution set up to deal with this kind of thing.

In my opinion, speech should really be free and there is no such thing as a right not to be offended, but if there has to be a government sponsored thought-police anyway it is better to clog it up with complaints of the kind that the founders never anticipated than to just let it sit there...

The thing that set me off about the Goldberg's columns (and I'm normally a huge fan of the guy) was how his one point (or one of only a couple points) of evidence for blogospheric excess was that microcephalic mouth-breather on Huffington Post who made the cannibalism claim based on... well, nothing, and who was then excoriated and called out for the empty-headed douchebag he is by all and sundry.

Jesus H. Christ, does Goldstein need a hug or something? Did Jonah forget to put him on a Hannukah list?

Cry me a fucking river. I thought Jonah's column wasn't his best, but good lord, I don't get that anal about fucking *football*, let alone blogospheric wind.

Wonderful. My life is now significantly enriched in knowing that Jeff thinks he's better than Jonah. Maybe they can meet up in Thunderdome and chainsaw it out.

Sigh. Doesn't he know there's a war on?

Cheers,

I think his point is well-taken. When Goldberg says "We in the blogosphere made similar mistakes," I have to object and say, "What's this 'we,' Kimo-Sabe?"

If you want to write a mea culpa, do so. Don't make it a wea culpa. This wea doesn't feel very culpable at all, and I'd appreciate if Jonah Goldberg doesn't drag me into his apology.

Goldstein points out (amongst many points) that journalists failed to do the tough reporting work, preferring to report rumors without any investigation. This journalistic sloth is endemic: they are used to being able to live off the low-hanging fruit in the news jungle. Bloggers are now competing with journalists for the easy stories and are faster and more agile in their reporting, raising the bar for real journalism.

I'd guess that 90% of journalists' resentment toward bloggers is due to the threat to their trough of 'easy' stories.

[Tugs on Ace's robe] Uh, your infallibleness? That's Kemo Sabe, not Kimo Sabe.

Posted by: geoff on September 29, 2005 02:33 PM

I think Jeff's (and Ace's) point is: "Just because you heaved your cookies and bought all of the rumors floating around, piled on FEMA with both feet and denigrated Bush, doesn't mean we all did."

And that does not give Jonah the right to accept (partial) responsibility for the failures of MSM. Jonah got it wrong in the beginning and has it wrong now. Two wrongs don't make a right.

One of the 10,000 dead bodies floating by would not do. Must be fresh meat.

The voice of experience speaking?

People have eaten months old rotten meat for millenia and (mostly) survived.

Let me clue you in - the stuff in the meat department at the grocery store is often several weeks old.

Jeff carried the water on that story for a long time and was ignored. He made an effort to stay rational and reality based and it paid off. Great posts, unrecognized. I guess cock is not big at N.R. I'm surprised!

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
