« Hitchens Debates George Galloway Tonight | Main | Video: Blanco Admits That Maybe Refusing Federal Troops Was a Not-So-Hot Idea »

La. Congressmen Uses Precious Federal Resources To Save Valuables From Own Home

Yeah, I know it's on Drudge. Stay with me. There's a little bit at the end that makes it worth reading again:

Amid the chaos and confusion that engulfed New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck, a congressman used National Guard troops to check on his property and rescue his personal belongings — even while New Orleans residents were trying to get rescued from rooftops, ABC News has learned.

...

ABC News that Jefferson, an eight-term Democratic congressman, asked the National Guard that night to take him on a tour of the flooded portions of his congressional district. A 5-ton military truck and a half dozen military police were dispatched.

Lt. Col. Pete Schneider of the Louisiana National Guard tells ABC News that during the tour, Jefferson asked that the truck take him to his home on Marengo Street, in the affluent uptown neighborhood in his congressional district. According to Schneider, this was not part of Jefferson's initial request.

...

The water reached to the third step of Jefferson's house, a military source familiar with the incident told ABC News, and the vehicle pulled up onto Jefferson's front lawn so he wouldn't have to walk in the water. Jefferson went into the house alone, the source says, while the soldiers waited on the porch for about an hour.

Emphasis mine. I'm buiding to something here.

Finally, according to the source, Jefferson emerged with a laptop computer, three suitcases, and a box about the size of a small refrigerator, which the enlisted men loaded up into the truck.

"I don't think there is any explanation for an elected official using resources for their own personal use, when those resources should be doing search and rescue, or they should be helping with law enforcement in the city," said Jerry Hauer, a homeland security expert and ABC News consultant.

The Louisiana National Guard tells ABC News the truck became stuck as it waited for Jefferson to retrieve his belongings.

...

The soldiers signaled to helicopters in the air for aid. Military sources say a Coast Guard helicopter pilot saw the signal and flew to Jefferson's home. The chopper was already carrying four rescued New Orleans residents at the time.

Okay, at the tail-end of the story, here comes the connecting-up part. Remember that laptop computer?

In an unrelated matter, authorities recently searched Jefferson's property as part of a federal investigation into the finances of a high-tech firm. Last month FBI officials raided Jefferson's house as well as his home in Washington, D.C., his car and his accountant's house.

...

Last week, Jefferson set up a special trust fund for contributions to his legal defense in light of the FBI investigation. A senior federal law enforcement source tells ABC News that investigators are interested in learning if Jefferson moved any materials relevant to the investigation. Jefferson says he did not.

Well, as long as he says so.

Thanks to DB.

OhHo! As I read what he took out of the house I thought, "Well, either he has files on his computer/file box that he needs for his work as Rep or he's making sure that something he's hiding doesn't get found." Given that he did not state in his request that he wanted to go home and recover important Congress related materials it certainly sounds like option #2.

Who was that character Keitel played in Pulp Fiction?

"The Cleaner" or something like that...

I applaud the congressman for showing the initiative to do his own "cleaning" rather than OUTSOURCE it.

This is the proverbial "accountability" we all yearn for.

Posted by: Tony on September 14, 2005 01:18 PM

Rep. Jefferson, Senator Landrieu, Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin have all provided the rest of this nation the best example of how not to run a state and a city. How much more pathetic can they all get?

Oh wait, I almost forgot that it's all W's fault.

Posted by: El Capitan on September 14, 2005 01:18 PM

Tony, Keitel played 'The Wolf' in Pulp Fiction, and 'The Cleaner' in the American version of 'Le Femme Nikita.'

Posted by: El Capitan on September 14, 2005 01:20 PM

Ho Hum, Blanco's done :

Blanco is accidentally caught on camera admitting that she didn't ask for troops and in retrospect, she should have.

Posted by: Ring on September 14, 2005 01:27 PM

Yeah. Blame the folks who had no phones, infrastructure or other means to beg King George to step up and do the right thing to help. Blame those who had been begging for help for days while Bush, Cheney and Rice remained on vacation. You people are so last year. Bush and the republicans will fall on their collective faces when all the facts come out. Remember, one of Bush's first comments was that he was going to be sure Trent Lott's hoiuse got rebuilt so he could sit on the front porch. Meanwhile, Blanco, Nagin and Landrieu were watching people die in droves. Compassionat conservatism indeed. You have all been exposed as the liars and hypocrites you all are.

Posted by: overu on September 14, 2005 01:27 PM

As they say around here, overu, wish in one hand and shit in the other, and see which comes true first.

We'll see in 2006. If you're right, you can gloat then.

Posted by: S. Weasel on September 14, 2005 01:33 PM

overu:

Let me summarize your points:
Why can't you understand that the evil Chimpy is at the heart of all that is evil and rotten in the Universe! His mighty and awful power spans time and space! He is the Dread Unnamed One, and Rove and Cheney are but his minions! Repent, for the Time of Horror is nigh! Repent! Repent!

overu, you need to be stalking around Central Park or Times Square with a sandwich board and a bell. Ace, can you set overu up with this stuff so he/she can join the other monster-shouting nutbars?

Posted by: Monty on September 14, 2005 01:36 PM

Overu, it seems that the only facts that are coming out are damning for the left.

The lefts policy of pre-emptive anger has failed them time and again and destroyed their credibility.

From day 1 the left has been spewing bile regarding Katrina and the way Bush dealt with it, all the while disregarding the plank in your own eye.

The rush to hate Bush for anything is funny, it also makes you careless. Do you really think you are endearing yourselves to the the moderates? Do you really think they will want to vote for a party that hates first, informs themselves later?

Bush has removed Brown, and said he will take responsibility for any federal mistakes made. Granted, that may be lip service, but it is still a hell of a lot more than the left has done as they continue to lie and cover for the incompetent assholes who got the citizens of NO in this mess in the first place.

Odd how Democrats can bus people to the voting booths but not to an out of state shelter.

PS, you know, you might want to include some links of those people begging for assistance. All Blanco asked for was about $9 million and some people to help clear up the debris.

Posted by: Ring on September 14, 2005 01:38 PM

Not just Drudge

Notice how they fail to mention the investigation and also the fact that he came out with a number of items. It just says he stays there for an hour.

Posted by: Ring on September 14, 2005 01:41 PM

I read somewhere that Louisiana has the 3rd most govt officials that have done prison time of any state in the country. Remember back in the early 90s governors race. The republican was an ex-grand wizard of the KKK and the Dem was under investigation. Since then, both guy went to prison. PRISON, man!!! Not a DUI or misdemeanor but freakin' prison. What should we expect from Louisiana?

But after listening to Overu, I guess we should blame it on W and the republicans, right?

Posted by: johnny reb on September 14, 2005 01:46 PM

There should be an online course or something - Grammar for Trolls.

I think overu is giving us a free preview of Michael Moore's upcoming film on Katrina: "Katrina and Me: How the Destruction of a City and Multiple Deaths lead to Box Office Gold."

Posted by: Slublog on September 14, 2005 01:50 PM

Prediction: While the Left screams now for an investigation by Anybody But Bush, they won't approve one unless they can stack it mercilessly. Why?

Because any impartial investigation is going to destroy Blanco and the Lefties know it. This will happen just about the time Hillary's cranking up the machine and nobody wants voters to give a lot of thought to the efficacy of menopausal near-dykes in an emergency.

Bet on it.

Yeah. Blame the folks who had no phones, infrastructure or other means to beg King George to step up and do the right thing to help

Flounder (Bush) you FUCKED UP, you trusted us (to be competent).

Posted by: Tony on September 14, 2005 02:03 PM

I think we should thank the troll "overu" (is that supposed to be something clever by the way cause its license plate lame) for saving us from having to discuss Dave's obsession with Powers (Red Dawn) Booth. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

In this case the MSM acted like Ace does when he's "with a girl". They got all hot and bothered, shot their load off early, and made a big mess on themselves. The only difference is sometimes Ace gets lucky, and "the girl" thinks its cute.

Posted by: Iblis on September 14, 2005 02:05 PM

It just says he stays there for an hour.

I just can't slam the guy for this, I can't.

Shreading evidence with a ginsu knife takes time. Its not like the power was on and he could use an electric shreader.

Come on, cut the guy some slack!

Posted by: Tony on September 14, 2005 02:06 PM

Remember, one of Bush's first comments was that he was going to be sure Trent Lott's hoiuse got rebuilt so he could sit on the front porch. Meanwhile, Blanco, Nagin and Landrieu were watching people die in droves.

Funny, but I "remember" no such comment from Smirky Bushitler. Perhaps overu can provide a link to that quote from some source outside Planet Atrios.

And it likely is outside our moral tutor's grasp that the roll-call of ciphers "watching people die" pretty much explains the crisis. The well-being of the people of New Orleans was in the hands of some profoundly incompetant and truly uncompassionate hacks.

Yet according to overu, the President is supposed to know how feckless is the top of the Democratic corruption order in LA. Perhaps he suspected it all along, but the proof only came with the crisis.

Cordially...

Posted by: Rick on September 14, 2005 03:35 PM

Rick, I'm pretty sure it's a real quote. He does have a tendency to say ... unfortunate ... things like that.

Posted by: Knemon on September 14, 2005 04:07 PM

Knemon,

Outside of moonbat sites, my Google returns no quotations indicating Bush's intent of seeing to Lott's house as a priority.

So "overu's" recall is not to be trusted.

Cordially...

Posted by: Ric on September 14, 2005 04:42 PM

I searched Google News with the terms:
Bush Lott house porch

The first site returned has this:
When George Bush finally visited the ravaged area several days later, he reminisced about the wild parties of his youth in New Orleans, and cutely said: "The good news is ... that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of (former Congressman) Trent Lott's house — he's lost his entire house — there's going to be a fantastic house. And I'm looking forward to sitting on the porch."

Posted by: vonKreedon on September 14, 2005 04:52 PM

Obviously he didn't mean that the whole area would be built, and was just using Lott's house as an example of a home that would be rebuilt nicely.

He meant, of course, that just Lott's house would be built (well, and some other rich white people), and that black people could go hang.

It's so obvious.

Posted by: ace on September 14, 2005 04:57 PM

von,

Thanks for helping underscore the troll's lunacy. Or do you have a problem with the Hallibushitlerian sentiment?

Cordially...

Posted by: Rick on September 14, 2005 05:03 PM

I'm afraid I don't understand your post to me. I guess I can say that I disaprove of the use of insulting terms such a Chimpy McHitlerburton, or smelly hippies as a substitute for actual thoughts on the issues.

Posted by: vonKreedon on September 14, 2005 05:14 PM

But Von, its been well established in the court of public opinion that hippies DO smell.
Not letting us point that out means that there's a pretty big olfactory elephant in the room we're ignoring.

Posted by: Iblis on September 14, 2005 05:31 PM

*raises hand*

I'm an ex-hippie. I smelled then and had psychotic political outlooks.

Unlike many, I recovered and I got better when I got smacked with the reality stick.

Posted by: Tony on September 14, 2005 06:29 PM

Hi Tony,

I doubt if you will even see this, but I enjoyed your posts. I was a teacher once, so I appreciated the raised hand. :) Some of our best conservatives are reformed (Michael Medved comes to mind). :) I have degrees in physics, so logic is important to me. It bothers me when liberals in my own family look at me like I am some sort of crazed moron when I disagree with them. Currently, I think being a liberal mostly is about cultish beliefs. You used to at least be able to argue with them, but I have not found that true lately. Their eyes glaze over as you begin to counter their insanity. You can actually see it happen. Their hate is palpable. They know that you are wrong before you speak. They know that I am more intelligent than they are, but they immediately discount what I say (OK, I have a brother who has a PHD from Berkeley who is much smarter than I, but he tends to take my side mostly :) ). I think that such crazed behavior is why conservatives are winning. I just think that it is an ugly way to win. I would prefer a fair intellectual fight, rather than a withdrawal from the field by the loopy Left.

Mike
