Live Video of Roberts Hearings

I hear it's fun stuff.

Senatrix Feinstein decided to invoke the Holcaust yesterday in her prepared opening remarks, for no good reason I can divine:

It is important to remember and learn from history. For centuries people have been persecuted for their religious beliefs. During the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, the Reformation, and even today, millions of innocent people have been killed and tortured because of their religious beliefs.

I recently traveled to Europe where I saw monuments enshrining the tragedies that have occurred in the name of religion. In Budapest along the River Danube there are 60 pairs of shoes covered in copper: women's, men's, small children's.

During World War II, Hungarian fascist and Nazi soldiers forced thousands of Jews including men, women and small children to remove their shoes, as a final humiliation, before shooting them and letting their bodies fall and drift down the river. These shoes represent a powerful symbol of man's inhumanity.

You know what else represents a powerful symbol of man's humanity?

Actually shooting these people, that's what.

And I submit this idiotic preening opening statement represents a powerful symbol of man's stupidity.

Why do they even allow them an opening grandstand?

These hearings are an embarassment. How dare they treat Roberts this way.

Who did they accuse of fillabusting?
Continue not to answer?
Is that Biden being the total asshat? What a pompous pig/liar.

Does she think she can get an Oscar?
Has anybody informed her that those cameras aren't Spielberg's?

Posted by: lauraw on September 13, 2005 12:35 PM

Feinstein is a Democrat for whom I retain a modicum of respec; she is the better of our California senators.

However, she is getting tired and should retire soon, while she still has her self-respect.

This display didn't help.

Posted by: Whitehall on September 13, 2005 12:39 PM

Any mention of Islamic terrorists blowing up the World Trade Center and murdering 2,749 people at the WTC complex on 9/11?

I didn't think so. But those terrorists did so in the name of religion too.

Guess that a 9/11 mention would violate the meme.

Posted by: lawhawk on September 13, 2005 12:39 PM

Jesus! Asking him about 23 year old memos that he wrote on someone else's behest?

Posted by: on September 13, 2005 12:42 PM

On a lighter note, there was a photo of Jack Roberts on the frontpage of the LAT today. What a cutie!

Posted by: on September 13, 2005 12:45 PM

Biden = Prick.

Posted by: on September 13, 2005 12:47 PM

...she is the better of our California senators.

That's a backhanded compliment, at best.

Posted by: John from WuzzaDem on September 13, 2005 12:47 PM

Chappaquiddick Teddy's first line today was congratulating Roberts for pro-bono work.
Second line?
Gratuitous Katrina bash-Bush drivel.

Posted by: Uncle Jefe on September 13, 2005 12:48 PM

Is it just me, or is anybody else starting to find Roberts' gaze a little disturbing? The right eye is tipped in a little bit, and they booth look kind of bloodshot. Shows up very well in the picture on Drudge at the moment.

Yeah. I'm that superficial.

Posted by: S. Weasel on September 13, 2005 12:50 PM

If you had to listen to that shit and pretend you are interested, how would you look after a while, Weasel?

Posted by: on September 13, 2005 12:55 PM

I don't like Spectre, but he seems to be holding those reins pretty tightly and letting Roberts actually ANSWER some of the questions posed.

Posted by: bbeck on September 13, 2005 01:03 PM

I hope NRO has the grace to admit what you just did, bbeck. They were shrieking doomsday when his chair came round and urging petitions and all that nonsense, as if they could possibly make a difference. I said at the time that they were throwing a pointless, damaging hissyfit and Specter just proved me right. Thank you, Mr Chairman, and good work.

Posted by: Megan on September 13, 2005 01:08 PM

That woman (Senate aid I assume) sitting behind Specter and Leahy must be one of the fugliest to have ever graced my television set. Looks like a frickin' female nosferatu.

Posted by: Otho Laurence on September 13, 2005 01:08 PM

That perpetually outraged schtick of Biden's has worn out my last nerve.

Christ, these hearings remind me once again of how I loathe the senators, all 100 of them. Is there one in the bunch who is not a pompous bag of flatulence? Why can they not just STFU? I found myself wishing that Boxer was on this committee, for the comic relief she provides.

Although I will say that my 2 senators, Cornyn and Hutchison, tend not to run off at the mouth so much, and they usually vote the way I like, so I should count my blessings.

Posted by: stace on September 13, 2005 01:16 PM

I don't know what NRO will do, Megan. To be fair, I haven't heard it all, but from the excerpts I think he's doing fine, esp. compared to some OTHER chairs I've witnessed. Anyone who cuts off Kennedy in mid-slur gets my vote.

And I wish he'd spell his last name Spectre because it's WAY cooler. But that's kinda irrelevant right now. :)

Later,
bbeck

Posted by: bbeck on September 13, 2005 01:19 PM

I was simulcommenting here, for anyone who's interested, while we wait for the full transcripts.

Man, I've got to get a DVD made out of this. This shit was awesome. Kennedy was slapped down 5 times total. Biden, I lost count.

BIDEN: "But his answers are misleading!"

SPECTER: "They may be misleading but they're his answers. Let him finish, Senator Biden."

Posted by: Megan on September 13, 2005 01:25 PM

Can Specter invoke Godwin's Law on Feinstein now? ;-)

Posted by: Ron on September 13, 2005 01:26 PM

Patrick Leahy sucks.

Just sayin'.

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 01:35 PM

I mean, it's obvious he doesn't give a damn what Roberts says, he has a script and he's sticking to it.

Plus he looks like the grinch.

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 01:36 PM

This is true.

Posted by: Megan on September 13, 2005 01:41 PM

Separated at birth?

Senator Patrick Leahy

The Grinch

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 02:00 PM

Boy they just can't lay off those Nazi references can they? hooo.

Feinstein has moments of bearability (for example, her introduction of Janice Rogers Brown at her confirmation hearings), but she is a California Dem and they are difficult to take in large doses.

Specter seems to be doing a decent job - the real test is gonna come with the next nomination.

It's ancient history, but if anybody is interested, Specter was the lead lawyer that argued the "pristine bullet" theory before the Warren Commission.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on September 13, 2005 02:01 PM

Cripes, Biden is a real a-hole, isn't he?

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 02:11 PM

O.T.: Heard a caller to a local radio program tell about attending some environmental conference in SF. Gore gave a speech on global warming, and drove off in his Cadillac Escalade. Arianna Huffington drove off in a Chevy Suburban -- driver in front, her in the back. The guy said he took pictures and they are posted on Free Republic. I should go find them and email them to Guttfeld.

Hey! Isn't this Tuesday? You know, HoistDay?

Posted by: on September 13, 2005 02:29 PM

KYL: "So how'd you do in those two cases [that you argued before the Supreme Court]?"
ROBERTS: "Well, the Court got it right both times."

Roberts got a good laugh with that one. :)

Posted by: Megan on September 13, 2005 02:44 PM

Criminy, why doesn't Kohl just come out and ask Roberts whether he still believes in segregation?

Is it just me, or does it seem like the Dems' heart really isn't in this one?

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 02:49 PM

Plus, I think they're overplaying the Katrina card.

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 02:53 PM

"Do you see a particular role for yourself in correcting the injustices of society that led to blah blah blah dying in Katrina disadvantaged poor... blah blah"

Good grief. He's not at this hearing to be confirmed as a fucking social worker you senile old coot.

Posted by: Megan on September 13, 2005 02:58 PM

"I don't think it's appropriate at all for me to comment on the President's future nominations. But I'm pretty happy with his past ones."

Another big laugh. :)

Posted by: Megan on September 13, 2005 03:06 PM

Boy oh boy do these morons like listening to themselves talk.

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 03:32 PM

I know DeWine is 'on our side,' but I'm really tired of listening to him talk.

Blah...blah...blah...SHUT UP!

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 03:41 PM

DeWine was easily the best and most thoughtful questioner today.

Feinstein up now. Betting she won't change my opinion.

Posted by: Megan on September 13, 2005 03:48 PM

Holy crap, Feinstein. That was a F***KING JOKE!!!!

HE WAS TRYING TO SAY MORE LAWYERS DO NOT LEAD TO THE COMMON GOOD.

Humor-impaired moron.

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 03:48 PM

I thought DeWine's questions were good, but his lead ins were a bit much.

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 03:49 PM

They were all pertinent and extremely informative. If anyone came near Roberts' intellectual level today it was DeWine. He's aces with me.

Posted by: Megan on September 13, 2005 03:50 PM

I like the guy, but just don't like long questions.

And Feinstein is showing some serious moron cred.

Posted by: Slublog on September 13, 2005 03:51 PM

Yep, back-handed compliment. I left our the "HAR HAR" part.

Feinstein has on occasion voted in a reasonable matter and was close to adult leadership for the Dems. Like I said, tired.

Boxer - well, I never understood what Phil Burton saw in her. Maybe it was the lips.

Posted by: Whitehall on September 13, 2005 05:36 PM

Is it just me, or is anybody else starting to find Roberts' gaze a little disturbing?

Maybe the waiters screwed up and gave him Teddy's "special" glass of water?

Posted by: Tony on September 13, 2005 05:39 PM

Graham's being a dick, surprisingly. The guy really needs to learn how to make his points better.

Posted by: Megan on September 13, 2005 06:04 PM

For some reason Schumer seems to think he's winning a big point by getting John Roberts to cricitize Pat Robertson. I have no idea why.

"The most you've said is that you disagree! Doesn't this turn your insides?!"

It's like... take a Midol, Chuck.
