(Sigh) It's "orang-utan," Ace. That's all I remember from college, other than what bar had cheap liqour on which night-- well that and how many hippies or neanderthals (with an hard, Irish "th," as in "No, Father, it's Danaher and Sean 'Torton.'") it takes to make an Aryan/Nazi, which is the same number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Cripes, I'm going to bed.

So, that's how it is, huh? You're not content with posting more than me, being funnier than me, getting more hits than me, and having your own INTERNET radio show with a hot chick, you now have to claim funny apes as your own?

Wonderful.

Cheers,

Ace is just dabbling, Dave. Don't worry, whenever I think of disturbing pictures of goofy-looking primates engaging in bizarre, uh, watersports, I still think of you.

News Advisory:

-- Katrina Evacuees to Tell President Bush His Administration Let Them Down
-- Request Meeting with President to Demand Accountability
-- Why Was Federal Funding Cut For Levee Maintenance?

Hurricane Katrina evacuees flew into the nation's capital to tell President Bush to stop blaming local officials for his mistakes and acknowledge that budget cuts and indifference by his administration led to the disaster in New Orleans and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

They intend to ask him why he diverted over 40 percent of federal funding between 2001-2005 away from New Orleans. Hundreds are expected to rally in front of the White House at 1 p.m. EDT on Thursday.

"The President of the United States and his appointees let us down," said Christine Mayfield, a New Orleans public school teacher and mother of three who was dislocated and now is staying in North Carolina.

The evacuees are also seeking a meeting with Rep. Henry Waxman, the ranking Democrat on the Government Oversight Committee.

According to Rep. Waxman, "the budget of the Corps of Engineers for construction projects in New Orleans district was cut by over 40 percent between 2001 and 2005, apparently to free up funds for the war in Iraq and homeland security projects. In 2004, for the first time in 37 years, the Corps halted all work on the New Orleans levee system."

New Orleans native Michelle Augillard, one of the evacuees, was working toward her Masters degree at the University of New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina hit. Now, she is staying with a friend in Houston, trying to pick up the pieces of her life, along with her family. Both Michelle and Christine will appear at the rally.

"It is inhumane to have treated citizens of the United States like we were treated," she said. "

Members of MoveOn.org Political Action are scheduled to hand- deliver thousands of petition signatures to the White House after the rally. The petition says, "President Bush should stop blaming the victims of Hurricane Katrina and get to work helping them."

WHO: Katrina Evacuees and MoveOn members
WHAT: Protest outside the White House in support of Hurricane Victims
WHEN: Thursday, September 8th at 1 p.m.
WHERE: Pennsylvania Avenue NW. In front of the White House. (Metro: Red Line: Farragut North. Blue-Orange Line: Farragut West or McPherson Square)

EDITOR'S NOTE: Excellent Visuals -- Signs reading "Shame" and "Help Hurricane Victims"

Posted by: on September 8, 2005 08:55 AM

"Hundreds are expected to rally in front of the White House at 1 p.m. EDT on Thursday"

You'd think they'd have better things to do. Like oh, say, rebuilding their lives?

So would these be the poor helpless people who didn't have any way to get out of the path of an oncoming hurricane in 3-4 days? Because, y'know, if that's the case it might be interesting to find out who's FLYING them up to DC. Pity they weren't flown up earlier.

Seriously, it's too early in the morning for this shit...

Posted by: Megan on September 8, 2005 09:00 AM

Damnit, I'm not even through my first cup of coffee and suddenly I'm reading a Moveon press release? And a poorly-written one at that?

And please note the fact that only middle-class people are quoted in the story. Does MoveOn hate the poor? Huh? Do they?

Posted by: Slublog on September 8, 2005 09:09 AM

"Protest outside the White House in support of Hurricane Victims"

No doubt most 'Hurricane Victims' think this is a useful activity at this particular point in time. I'm sure they'd rather have these 'hundreds' of people doing this then, say, assembling relief packages.

Posted by: BrewFan on September 8, 2005 09:15 AM

"President Bush should stop blaming the victims of Hurricane Katrina and get to work helping them."

Mmmm...coffee.

Keeps me from going batcrap crazy at stuff like that.

Posted by: Slublog on September 8, 2005 09:17 AM

I'm on my second mug already. I'll need a whole new pot of coffee before noon at this rate.

Posted by: Megan on September 8, 2005 09:18 AM

I saw something about a rally on MSNBC this morning.

Gee, surprisingly enough, they made it sound all grass-roots and organized by the victims themselves.

Nothing about MoveOn or nice signs.

Posted by: Slublog on September 8, 2005 09:20 AM

Y'know, O/T a bit, but we haven't had a good Top Ten from Ace in a while now. Maybe a Top Ten Katrina Ironies or something.

#10. Ted Kennedy saying anything, anything at all, about people drowning.

Posted by: Megan on September 8, 2005 09:24 AM

Also, I was just thinking of the way Nagin is acting these days and sadly enough it immediately reminded me of that crazy lady who thought the President had kidnapped and abused her and her husband. Ace wrote a post about some lefty whackjob taking her seriously back in the day (I think it was on his old site) and every few paragraphs he'd interrupt himself and type "MOTHERFUCKER!!!!"

For some reason I haven't been able to stop giggling since I thought of that.

Posted by: Megan on September 8, 2005 09:30 AM

I think I was reading, but not commenting, at that point. Don't remember that specific post, but it sounds funny.

Nagin's outrage got old after awhile, especially after it became clear he was one of the main guys who dropped the ball.

This moveon thing is annoying, though. I've just had my fill of nonsense from the left.

Posted by: Slublog on September 8, 2005 09:35 AM

I'll cut them slack once because of that whole houses for families thing they did.

Crazy shit on Fox right now.

Posted by: Megan on September 8, 2005 09:37 AM

Anonymous, that is fucking awesome!

I want wall-to-wall hurricane protest coverage. CNN and other media outlets will probably cherry-pick the coverage to make the protestors seem sane, but it will be futile.

Because no matter how you sanitize quotes or obfuscate the originators of the protest, this is the unescapable conclusion that anybody watching will come up with:

"I'm sure they'd rather have these 'hundreds' of people doing this then, say, assembling relief packages."

Mwa ha ha haaa!
All hail Karl Rove!

Shep Smith just pronounced "tarpaulin" as "tarpoleon". I haven't heard that since high school in Oklahoma. I love it.

Posted by: See-Dubya on September 8, 2005 10:01 AM

Criminy. This is such a sad story.

I think Moveon's housing thing is great, but does f'in everything have to be political?

Oh yeah, and grant research sucks.

My dog just walked up to me very slowly with a weird look on his face.
I said, 'What's the matter buddy?'

He pasted his ears back and looked down and rolled his eyes around.
I said, 'Uh oh, what did you do?'
He looked panicky and tried to make himself very, very small with big eyes and just the tip of his tail wagging madly. You'd think he was afraid I was gonna beat him!

Just did a thorough walk-through, I can't find any mess, trashcan has not been disturbed, etc. He followed me the whole way with slouched-up shoulders and his head down.

Whatever he did, I can't find it.

Come on, Mr. Pussy Ape, let's see some wake jumpin'

Posted by: T. Harris on September 8, 2005 11:53 AM

Okay, so I'm doing grant research for my job. I come across the Ben and Jerry's Foundation.

Here is what they fund:

Grant applicants need to demonstrate that their projects will:

* lead to societal, institutional and/or environmental change;
* address the root causes of social or environmental problems; and
* lead to new ways of thinking and acting.

Projects must:
* help ameliorate an unjust or destructive situation by empowering constituents;
* facilitate leadership development and strengthen the self-empowerment efforts of those who have traditionally been disenfranchised in our society; and
* support movement building and collective action.

The first thing that popped into my head was Bob Slydell's question to Tom Smykowski in Office Space - "So, what would you say you do here?"

Posted by: Slublog on September 8, 2005 11:58 AM

lauraw, another major difference between dogs and cats. dogs suffer from remorse, and wear expressions of guilt.

cats have character flaws and do neither.

our puppy wears that expression at least once a day.

come to think of it, so do I

Posted by: Dave in Texas on September 8, 2005 12:03 PM

"cats have character flaws and do neither."

Yep. Our cat has penchant for tipping over the little waste baskets in the bathroom and when you catch her she's all like "what are you looking at moron" and then runs like hell.

Posted by: BrewFan on September 8, 2005 12:31 PM

One of the best comments about cats versus dogs I heard was that if you yell at a dog, it will beg, plead and do everything in its power to get back into your good graces.

So much as look at a cat funny, though, and it will plan your death for months.

Posted by: Slublog on September 8, 2005 12:33 PM

I'll probably find an item somewhere strange in about a month. Like a sandwich wrapper (lifted from the trash) underneath a desk or something.

Posted by: lauraw on September 8, 2005 01:19 PM

You know what I hate?

When someone is friggin' late for a friggin' meeting that you don't even want to friggin' have.

Just sayin'.

Posted by: Slublog on September 8, 2005 01:33 PM

Oh, but it's not real remorse. When you come home and there's a warm, dog-shaped impression on the new bedspread and your dog has That Look...well, her sense of shame didn't keep her from getting up on the bed in the first place, did it? And it won't prevent her doing it again the moment your back is turned. Dogs are the Uriah Heeps of the pet world. Obsequious and insincere.

Cats at least are refreshingly honest and gleeful about their misbehavior. Hey! Lookit! I peed in your headphones! Do you know how hard that was?

Posted by: S. Weasel on September 8, 2005 01:34 PM

I hate cats. My daughters inflicted two of them on me. My oldest daughter didn't even have the decency to take one of em to school with her. He is the whiniest son of a bitch you ever met. I get along better with communists than I do cats. They're sneaky, no good, entitlement-minded, brats who'll enter into any relationship in order to abuse it.

S. W, yeah, they do fake the sincerity, I always thought it was just cause he's a male.

Posted by: Dave in Texas on September 8, 2005 02:03 PM

Cats have no shame or remorse, they know that no matter their behavior someone will feed them. They feel that being responsible or productive is for the little people.

Holy crap, my cat is a Democrat!

Must go kick her now.

Posted by: Lipstick on September 8, 2005 02:08 PM

support movement building

I've got a warehouse full of armadillo flavor Ex-Lax I need to...ummm unload. Do you think Ben and Jerry will be interested? A warehouse full of Ex-Lax can generate a LOT of movements.

My financial advisors swore the amadillo flavor would be the hottest new product on the market in decades. I think they lied...this product moves about as fast as the chocolate covered cotton balls did.

Posted by: Tony on September 8, 2005 03:12 PM

Say Tony, you're financial adviser wouldn't happen to be Dogstar, would it? Cuz his website sure didn't disclose such an eccentric investment strategy.
