Two "Mohammed Attas?

Tom Maguire and Mickey Kaus speculate that the Mohammad Atta ID'd by Able Danger was a different Atta, one assoicated with Abu Nidal's terrorist group.

It's a possibility. Sure would be nice if we had a professional and well-paid media around to dedicate resources to confirming or refuting theories like this.

Even so, one Atta in hand would have been better than two Attas in the bush.

Ace,

We have to get used to the fact that we no longer have traditional news providers.

The msm by choice has become (i) a shill and an abetter for the democrats and other enemies of the United States (ii) what you'd get when you put a forger and quisling in a blender, with a bit of metrosexual gloss added. (Apologies for the repitition.)

Posted by: max on August 19, 2005 01:58 PM

Besides, both these guys were terrorists. The name "Mohammed Atta" should have been ringing bells anytime it showed up.

Posted by: Iblis on August 19, 2005 02:18 PM

Who cares? Bottom line is some treasonous chairborne tardwads gave a free pass to a terrorist cell that could have been shutdown.

[Consulting a calendar to see who was responsible at the time is left as an excercise for the student]

A false positive wouldn't surprise me. Data mining such disparate and largely dirty data sets produces a lot of them,

Posted by: Brian DeSpain on August 19, 2005 02:58 PM

It would be nice to know if Atta's photo was on that Able Danger chart, with a Post-It note covering it.

Posted by: Sue Dohnim on August 19, 2005 03:03 PM

Okay, who's been playing jedi mind tricks again? Cue Obi-Wan: This isn't the Atta we're looking for?!

So, we have a possible reason the Able Danger team pulled Atta's name, but we don't know all the data sets that were run to obtain Atta's name. Lexis is only one database. What other databases were used, and that would go a long way to resolving this.

Oh, and if it was a case of mistaken identity, who knew that we would have latched onto the 9/11 Atta by pulling data on the Abu Nidal Atta, whose boss, Abu Nidal himself, ended up in a comfy chair in Iraq.

Curious.

Posted by: lawhawk on August 19, 2005 04:22 PM

Other databases?

Undoubtedly, at a minimum, DMV records for most states, that's all public info. That would yield a lot of pictures that you could run sophisticated image match stuff on.

Then there's all the Experian/TRW type stuff that's purchasable by almost anyone with the green to do it. That can yield movement info as addresses change over time. If an Atta in say Miami suddenly stops getting credit reports on a Miami address and a new Atta(or aliases) in NY starts within some specified window, and other DMV physical charistics match, theres a fair chance it might be the same guy.

Ah, but you're limiting yourself to US domestic databases. What about European or Asian databases. If you're tasked to checking out foreign threats, those would be included as well.

Posted by: lawhawk on August 19, 2005 04:32 PM

The original story on Able Danger mentioned identifying 3 or 4 of the terrorists who were on the 9/11 planes. If that's correct, then they probably id'd the correct Atta.

>Ah, but you're limiting yourself to US domestic databases

You asked for examples, not a definitive list.

"The original story on Able Danger mentioned identifying 3 or 4 of the terrorists who were on the 9/11 planes. If that's correct, then they probably id'd the correct Atta."

You've got it all wrong Bill - its not about actual data, its about spin. Whoever turns the most RPM's here is going to be the winner in the public eye.

I smell the stench of Bill Clinton again. The similarities between this story and the "accidental" bombing of the Chinese embassy (at a time when the WSJ was zeroing in on his treasonous selling of nuclear secrets to the Chinese) are obvious. Even the MSM was unable to ignore the Chinese military connection story anymore; so to confuse the country about his involvement with the Chinese military he created another China story by "accidentially" bombing the Chinese embassy. It "sucked up all the oxygen" in the MSM and allowed the Chinese to huff and puff and look very angry at us, thereby appearing to distance themselves after they had paid Clinton for nuclear secrets (as if a few staff mattered to them compared to our missle technology). It also gave the MSM a story to focus on instead of Clinton's treason. And it worked! Finding or creating another Mohammed Atta is the best way to confuse the public about Able Danger by diverting attention away from Don Clintioni and the Clintonistas and focusing it upon going down rabbit trails that ulimately will lead nowhere, but will divert attention away from the Don's guilt about not doing anything about terrorism. And the MSM can't wait to make it work, again.

I shall pray for them all, for they shall ultimately all get what is coming to them.

That's what I thought as well about the identified Brooklyn cell. It would be quite a coincidence if there were 3 or 4 terrorists sharing the same names with other terrorists and working together.

When dealing with the liberal "reality distortion field" all things are possible...indeed likely...ummm, actually in fact CERTAINTY.

In fact, this Atta was a completely innocent hot dog vendor at Coney Island...

In fact, this Atta was a 97 year old 6'11" tall blond hair blue eyed parapalegic Swede in a wheel chair...

Well to be fair, Mohammed IS a common name...and Atta would put you at the beginning of the phone book! ;)

Maybe middle-eastern men all use Mohammed Atta when they check into hotels for indecent trysts, sort of like John Smith over here.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
