Microwave Gun Promises Less-Lethal Response To Rioters; Scientists Fret It's Not 100% Non-Lethal

How could the MSM write these articles, if not with helpful quotes from left-wing scientists who fret about all new weapons systems?

Ignore the asshole scientists; there is a danger of people being hurt by a less-lethal weapon (that's why they call them less lethal weapons, and not, say, "Completely Safe To Shoot At A Child's Eye Weapons"), but it seems a safer response than opening up .50 caliber machineguns into a crowd:

Scientists are questioning the safety of a Star Wars-style riot control ray gun due to be deployed in Iraq next year.

The Active Denial System weapon, classified as "less lethal" by the Pentagon, fires a 95-gigahertz microwave beam at rioters to cause heating and intolerable pain in less than five seconds.

The idea is people caught in the beam will rapidly try to move out of it and therefore break up the crowd.

...

"What happens if someone in a crowd is unable for whatever reason to move away from the beam," asked Neil Davison, coordinator of the non-lethal weapons research project at Britain's Bradford University.

I don't know, Neil. What happens if the microwave radiation triggers a genetic mutation turning the crowd into slavering mutant man-boars? I guess someone will wind up getting hurt.

But, again, what happens when someone in the crowd does not possess the super-martial-arts ability to dodge machinegun fire? I guess they end up getting hurt, too, Neil.

I love that every MSM headline about a new weapon has to contain a mention of the "worries" of "scientists" about possible "harm."

They could mention the "hopes" of "engineers" about possible "fewer deaths," but they never seem to, do they?

No bias, of course.

I object to less than 100% lethal weapons being used on rioters.

Damn, there's nothing I hate more than slavering mutant man-boars. That part of it needs to be fixed.

My understanding is if you can't get out of the path of the microwave ray, you get all hot and bothered. If you can't get out of the way of the Browning Ma-Deuce .50 cal, you get pureed. Your choice.

And wasn't the same thing said lo these many years ago about that other new invention - guns? Perhaps the meaning of the word 'weapon' has escaped them...

Posted by: Claire on July 21, 2005 06:56 PM

I hate rioters.

Posted by: Guy Dupree on July 21, 2005 06:58 PM

Why not use a flame thrower? Just light it and start walking towards the crowd. If they don't have the good sense to disperse, tough.

"What happens if the microwave radiation triggers a genetic mutation turning the crowd into slavering mutant man-boars?"

What the Hell comics have you been reading all these years? Surely you know that only Cosmic and/or Gamma radiation is necessary* for the activation of our latent mutant genes.

You're slipping.

*radioactive and otherwise toxic chemicals can of course be used too.

I agree with Megan. Our money would be more wisely spent on weapons that kill smelly hippies, anarchists, and trustafarians.

Barring that, I guess cannons that shoot soapy water might work.

Posted by: Sean M. on July 21, 2005 07:22 PM

tasers, pepper sprays, rubber bullets... all designed to be 1) non-lethal, and 2) non skull-cracking.

that law enforcement is willing to consider using them instead of guns and nightsticks speaks very well of them.

of course, they won't get any credit for it and the asswipes who hate civilization will rail against them anyway.

Allen, I'm sorry but you're wrong there. You've forgotten about Fallout Boy - Radioactive Man's sidekick. His superpowers came about as a result of a series of powerful face x-rays. I don't remember what his superpowers were, other than pointing to some dangerous thing and mentioning it to Radioactive Man.

Might failure to use the most effective possible means of riot dispersal possibly result in something other than 100% non-lethality?

Posted by: Dave Munger on July 21, 2005 09:55 PM

"What happens if someone in a crowd is unable for whatever reason to move away from the beam,"?

Well, I don't rightly know, Neil. Sounds like we need to do an intense series of experiments and find out. What was that? You volunteer?

Posted by: Dave on July 22, 2005 12:07 AM

The A-10's main gun.

Enough said.

It's considerably less than 100% lethal unless they've disabled the rate-of-fire-limiter and stall the freaking plane out of the air.

Oh wait, less lethal for the _target_. Um. This doesn't qualify.

Can't they just send in Margaret Cho with a microphone and a list of her ten best "jokes"?

That should clear the place out.

Posted by: The Warden on July 22, 2005 03:06 AM

Plus they can use it to heat up their sandwiches between bouts of hippie-bashing.

Posted by: Ring on July 22, 2005 03:15 AM

What happens if they can't get out of the way, you dipshit? I guess they'll Jiffy-pop all over your tweed jacket and Birkenstocks, won't they?

Posted by: spongey non-grata on July 22, 2005 10:28 AM

Yeah, they're right.
Let's just go back to firehoses.

Posted by: lauraw on July 22, 2005 12:46 PM

And dogs. Big, bitey, 100% non-lethal dogs.

And lots and lots of men with batons, doling out wooden shampoos. Sensitively.

Posted by: lauraw on July 22, 2005 12:48 PM

I don't know, but microwaving a crowd sounds lot more humane than, say, blaring Yoko Ono from loud speakers.

Tomorrow is March 25th, "Tolkien Reading Day," because March 25th is the day when the Ring is destroyed in the book. I think I'm going to start the Hobbit tomorrow and read all four books this time.
The only bad part of the trilogy are the Frodo/Sam chapters in The Two Towers. They're repetitive, slow, and mostly about the weather and terrain. But most everything else is good. Weirdly, the Frodo-Sam chapters in Return of the King are exciting and action-packed and among the best in the trilogy. (Though the chapters with everyone else in Return of the King get pretty slow again. Mostly people talking about marching towards war, and then marching towards war.)

Instead it is doing what we accuse the Left of, that is sexualizing young children. If that describes you, own it.

It's a heavily armored (the pilot sits in a titanim bathtub) slow-and-low loitering plane with a massive minigun firing depleted uranium rounds. The capability it brings is the ability to just fly big circles over the country waiting for a target to present itself. This is a weapons platform for eliminating vehicles and personnel. Its first task might be strafing the seas, clearing out any remaining attack boats and minelayers.
Update: My ballpark estimate for a reasonable cost for a wildlife overpass (suitably padded to sate the thirst of Democrat grifters) was $15 million. Turns out, that was a good estimate. That's how much it cost Denver to build one.
