9-11 Widow Wastes All $5 Mil of Government Payout

Her husband's last request was, "Build a rollerblade court in the backyard. And, also, I don't think I can sleep in peace unless you buy a seventy-foot high statue of Crazy Horse made entirely of caviar."

It's good that she was such a dutiful wife.

There's nothing sadder than someone who strikes it rich -- even under these sad conditions -- and then pisses it away.

Dude, really, stop. All I need is another forty tons of beluga, and I've got his nose perfect.

Back off, man.

Sheesh Midaz, I fixed it.

Irregardless, you're still a jackass.

I remember an old Mr. Boffo cartoon, of a panhandler holding a cup and a sign reading, 'Please spare some change - Won the lottery twice, wasted the money foolishly," and a policeman telling him to move along before he gets hurt, as people glare at him angrily.

Posted by: Wanda on June 14, 2005 10:05 PM

She's down to her last half a million in cash. Uh, yeah, she's really hurting. And she also has several assets she could get rid of and still live quite comfortably...or is it just easier for her to keep all her goodies and *itch about a "disease" to milk more sympathy (undeserved this time) from the public?

This woman owns a ton of JUNK, including that now-garish house. She developed a spending problem. I think it's time to develop a SELLING problem.

A $5 million award, and now she has nothing? Why do I suspect Don King's involvement here . . .

Posted by: The Colossus on June 15, 2005 12:43 AM

I knew Dan, and this is a sad story. She needs help. The whole family does.

Please be careful about knocking someone in these circumstances. I'm not choosy about funny material, they're fair game, but let's cut them some slack from the haters.

Posted by: spongeworthy on June 15, 2005 11:37 AM

According to the article, just over 2 milion came from the charitable award, and 3 million came from her own friends and family.

This is a bullshit screen that she is using to cover herself from her family's anger.

"I give you a million of my own money to get you through the hard time and you did WHAT with it??"

As they used to say: some people can die of thirst in a flood.
(Actually, flood water contains so much contagen of all types you can't drink it, but it sounds good).

Posted by: 72 VIRGINS on June 15, 2005 12:08 PM

She needs help.

She already got help once and look at what she did. It's not being "hateful" to expect her to take some responsibility for her actions, especially now that she seems to recognize she's overdone it.

I'm certain there was a lot of spending that 9-11 families engaged in. Depressed or not, most people would succumb to the temptation to buy things they've always wanted and could suddenly afford. A problem arises, however, when someone spends all of their money and then tries to blame it on a disease stemming from their depression...when it's far more likely the blame lies in the Grasshopper Effect of failing to plan for the future.

But let's give her a break and say this woman DOES have a disease. The money she got from the government was designed to compensate for her husband's income so she'd never have to work. Well, she's STILL got a lot of that money, it's just tied up in assets. If she sold her stuff and moved to a cheaper place, she could still have a great home and not have to work. So, why doesn't she do that? She may not want to move out of the home she lived with her husband in -- although she didn't have a problem with completely remodeling it -- and while that's sentimental and all, moving is just a consequence of her disease, because having a disease DOES have a down side. In other words, any help shouldn't come in the form of more money and sympathy, but rather in teaching her to properly deal with what she has left.

Spongeworthy:

Than someone close to the family needs to step in and manage her finances until she can do it herself - if that day ever comes. They also need to impart to her that going public with this is unbecoming to say the least and has a negative effect on charitable giving.

There was so much good she could have done with that money for herself, her family and for others. Unfortunately, she blew the opportunity.

Make that: Then somebody

Posted by: on June 15, 2005 01:46 PM

You both have a point here. I would point out that the family wasn't starving to begin with and they had some acquaintance with excess cash. Spending is hardly new to these poeple, just this caliber of spending.

I don't know the widow or the kids at all, but I am quite familiar with the repercussions of this particular type of loss. You don't want to underestimate how guilty you can feel about being paid for losing someone in such a horrible way. I suspect a deep desire to get rid of the dough is behind this, and it's too buried to stand up and yell, "So give it to some homeless dudes!"

Anyway, criticizng them is one thing, but I hate to see otherwise nice people pilloried for freaking out like this. Now if it were funny, that's another story.

Posted by: spongeworthy on June 15, 2005 02:09 PM

Fair enough, Sponge. You're just a nicer person than I am. :) And I am sorry if Dan was a friend of yours. We'll all be feeling 9-11 for years to come, some more than others.

It will be interesting to see if this woman gets her act together. I hope so for her family's sake.

I'm just glad there was money put aside for the children, so they won't end up with nothing due to the mother's excesses.

True 'dat.

Posted by: spongeworthy on June 15, 2005 03:24 PM

I see that she now wants to start a hair removal business. Maybe Ace can recommend it to Mr Combover!

Posted by: Steve on June 15, 2005 03:35 PM

Now I'm really glad I only donate to animal charities! My mom lost her first husband when she had my older brothers 8 and 6 months old and she only got social security which she saved for their education and savings accounts. She was poor but sounds like she was much classier than this greedy woman.

Funniest thing I've read about the Virginia mess. Back when they were hustling the referendum through the assembly both Senators, Warner and Kaine, advised them to go slow and play by the rules. Louise Lucas said she respected them but didn't need advice from the "cuck chair" in the corner. The gerrymandering was overturned and Louise is heading for the big house. Edward G. -- reportedly a genuine comment offered by a "senior Labour source"
Correction: I wrote that Labour is losing 88% (now 87%) of the seats it is "defending." I think that's wrong. The right way to say it is the seats they are contesting -- that is, they don't necessarily already hold these seats, but they have put up a candidate to run for the seat. It's still very bad but not as bad as losing 87% of the seats they already held.

🚨ED MILIBAND [a Minister in Starmer's government] SAYS KEIR STARMER WILL RESIGN AS PRIME MINISTER

He has reportedly reassured Labour MP's that Starmer will be resigning following the disastrous results tonight

It's over
"The end of the two party system in the UK" as first the Fake Conservatives and now Labour chooses political suicide rather than simply STOPPING THE INVASION
Incidentally, the only reason this didn't already happen in the US is because of the Very Bad Orange Man (who is right on 85% of all policy calls and extremely, existentially right on 15% of them)
No political party that is NOT also a doomsday religious cult would EVER choose a cataclysmic loss -- and possible extinction as a party -- to support a toxically unpopular favoritism of NON-CITIZEN ILLEGAL MIGRANTS over actual citizen voters.

Only a cult does this.
Now they've lost 84%.
Annunziata Rees-Mogg
@zatzi
If this continues Labour loses 2,148 seats tonight.

That is much worse than the worst case predictions I’ve seen.

Cataclysmic

Update: They've now lost 88% of the seats they're defending. As I mentioned earlier, I think I heard that London will not bail them out, as many of those Labour seats will probably flip to "Muslim Independent" or Green. Detroit's 5am vote will not save them.
Yup, Labour is losing 80% of its seats...
The British Patriot
@TheBritLad

🚨 BREAKING: Labour have lost 80% of all seats contested as of 2:25 AM.<
br> If this continues, Keir Starmer will be out of office next week.

Reform has surged and projected to pick up between 1700-2100 seats.

Wow, up to 1700-2100 seats. It's not incredible that this is happening. It's incredible that the Davos crowd is so absolutely determined to privilege Muslim "migrants" over the actual native population who elects them, no matter how loudly the natives scream that they want to be prioritized, that they will gladly self-extinguish as a party rather than simply representing the interests of their own voters. Astonishing.
Remember, when they call other people "cultists" -- they are the ones so imprisoned in their social reinforcement and discipline bubbles that they will choose political death rather than dare upset the Karen Enforcement Officers of their cult.
Update: Now they've lost 83% of the seats they were defending.
(((Dan Hodges)))
@DPJHodges

Reform are basically wiping Labour out in the North. It's not a defeat. It's not even a rout. Labour are simply ceasing to exist.

Nick Lowles
@lowles_nick

Tonight’s results are calamitous for Labour. Not just for Keir Starmer's leadership, but for the very future of the party
STARMERGEDDON: In early returns, Reform gains 135 seats, Labour loses 90, the Fake Conservatives lose 36 (and I didn't even know they could fall any further), the Lib Dems lose 4, and the Greens gain 6. Note that the only other party gaining seats is the Greens and they're only gaining a handful of seats.
Update: Reform now up 145, Labour down 98.
Labour projected to lose Wales -- where they've ruled for 27 years.
Fulton County Georgia just discovered 400 boxes of ballots for Labour
Update: REF +156, LAB -107, CON -45
Brutal: In four out of five council seats where Labour is defending, they've lost. 80%.
I'm sure it's not this simple, but Reform is straight taking Labour's and the "Conservatives'" seats. They've lost almost exactly what Reform gained. If understand this right (and warning, I probably don't), all of London's council seats are up for election, and Labour might lose hugely there, as their old voters abandon them for Reform, Muslim Indenpendents, and the Greens.
REF +190, LAB -134, CON -56.
Updates on the Labour collapse in council elections -- which wags are calling #Starmergeddon -- from Beege Welborne. There are about 5000 seats up for grabs, Labour is expected to lose 1,800, Reform will probably gain 1,580, up from... zero. So this would be more than that.
People claim that while Labour has adopted the Sharia Agenda to appeal to the million Muslims it allowed to migrate to the country, those voters are ditching Labour to vote for the Muslim Independent Party or the Greens. Delicious. This shadenfreude is going straight to my thighs.
Oh, and if Starmer loses about as badly as expected, Labour will toss him out of a window Braveheart style and replace him. He will announce he is resigning to spend more time with his Gay Ukrainian Male Prostitutes.
Media bias and senationalism are as old as, well, the media:

That was written by Denny O'Neill and illustrated by, get this, Frank Miller. Editor to the Stars Jim Shooter was in charge at the time.
I always thought the gag was original to the comic book, but in fact the "Threat or Menace" headline was a satirical joke about media bias and sensationalism for a long while. The Harvard Lampoon used it in a parody of Life magazine: "Flying Saucers: Threat or Menace?"
