Kelsey Grammer Confirmed for "Beast" in X-Men 3; Topher Grace and Thomas Hayden Church To Play Heavies in Spiderman 3As I've said, Grammer is perfect for the Beast's intellectual side. All the nimbleness and stuff can be faked or trained; I don't think Rebecca Romaijn was a master martial-artist before her turn as Mystique, either. Church is rumored to be playing one of Spidey's lamer villains, The Sandman. The Sandman was the original villian in James Cameron's "scriptment" (script/treatment) for the original. Why he keeps popping up in these pre-script brainstorming sessions I don't know; okay, he can turn to sand, big f'n' deal. The only worse Spidey villain is Hydroman (who can turn into... water) or maybe the useless Vulture. One of Spiderman's cooler foes, The Shocker, never seems to get mentioned by anyone, even though he looks cool and has cool powers. Topher might be playing anyone, from Venom (no way) to Mysterio to Electro. I say Electro. And I say let Church play Mysterio. He's got the voice for it. Anyone remember Mysterio's voice from the old good Spiderman cartoon? I think Church could do that. Thanks to Chickpea. posted by Ace at 01:01 PM
CommentsYes... yes... I have heard this shocker has cool powers. Posted by: Charles on May 27, 2005 01:25 PM

I thought they might go with The Lizard, since they had a cameo or two by "Dr. Connors" in Spiderman 2. Posted by: Ayes of Death David on May 27, 2005 01:28 PM
However, oddly enough, Rebecca Romijn *did have* blue skin. Strange, that. As for Spiderman, I've been bored with the movies. They're class acts, and I love Sam Raimi, but alas, they've made me yawn. That said, the rumors have long been Lizard, but absolutely no Venom. I dunno why Venom always gets the shaft, but for some reason, I've repeatedly read that no one wants to do that story. Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on May 27, 2005 01:48 PM
Oh, I bet Topher is on to play Venom. He's almost tailor-made as a mirror image of Tobey Maguire. Posted by: Matt on May 27, 2005 01:48 PM
I'd like to see the villian in the next SM movie be Venom. I always thought he was the coolest SM villian ever. Posted by: Tom on May 27, 2005 01:49 PM
Jesus Christ! Is that all your screenwriters can come up with? More comic book movies? Yech! Grow up already. You're not 13 years old, you geezers. Posted by: on May 27, 2005 02:11 PM
SWEET!! Kelsey is PERFECT for that role! Great casting move. Posted by: TallDave on May 27, 2005 02:26 PM
Well, Venom has an absurdly convoluted backstory, involving that whole "Beyonder" series. They can just make up a new one, of course. But then there's the problem that the entire character would have to be CGI-- how else ya gonna do that ridiculously oversized maw? I know the SM films feature a LOT of CGI main characters, but usually just for longer-distance shots. Venom would be CGI even close-up, and we all saw how well that worked in the Hulk. Posted by: ace on May 27, 2005 02:34 PM
Yeah, the backstory for Venom would definitely be a deal-killer if you tried to adhere to the comic-book continuity. Then again, MJ found out that PP was SM in SM2, so I don't think they're holding strictly to the comic book continuity (and, yeah, I know MJ is married to PP and knows he's SM in the comics now, but she didn't find out until a long time after Doc Ock appeared). Sandman and Hydroman are pretty cool - there's only so many time you can beat them with a vacuum cleaner or by mixing them into cement, so sooner or later, they have to win. Sandman's best moment was the bar scene with Ben Grimm about 15 years ago when they spent a whole comic drinking, then finally decided not to fight. Hydroman's best scene was his fight with the Black Panther about 5 years ago, where he flooded a plane in mid-air. (Yes, it could have been lame, but it rocked). Posted by: J Mann on May 27, 2005 04:35 PM
Yes, Charles, the Shocker is quite something. Or, so I have heard. Posted by: Nathan S. on May 27, 2005 04:49 PM
I think Sandman's best appearance was in an FF comic where Ben Grimm was laid up in the hospital and all the old foes tried to get to him, only to be outdone by heroes dropping in to visit. Only one foe gets through, Sandman, but instead of taking out the ever lovin' blue-eyed idol 'a millions, he brings a six-pack and cigars. Nice. Venom? I stopped reading SM after he showed up. The entire symbiote storyline was lame. Electro? Max Dillon was a psycho, hardly a deep enough character for a major film. Shocker? Yeah, cool suit and all, and I sure which I had his gauntlets, but Spidey regularly kicked his tail. I vote for Mac Gargan, the Scorpion, with JJJ's son and the whole revenge angle thrown in. That storyline rocked. Scorps was always a tough foe. Have cameos by the Rhino and Johnny Storm and all will be good. Still waiting for the Thor movie though...and Iron Man...the list goes on. And will Captain America ever be properly done? Not by Hollywood, that's for sure. Posted by: Brennan on May 27, 2005 05:18 PM
I'd like them to do one of those "oh, no, a whole plethora of villains are after Spidey all at once" things. Then they can squeeze in the Kingpin and the Rhynocerous guy. The rhyno guy haunts me, how does he pee? Posted by: Dave Munger on May 27, 2005 09:23 PM

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
