Bob Saget: Potty Mouth

Anyone who watched comedy in the early eighties knew Bob Saget to be one of the dirtiest comics working in the business. Which made his squeaky-clean turns in Full House and America's Funniest Videos a little odd.

Seriously-- at one point, Bob Saget was quite funny.

A nice article about his days as the Jewish Redd Foxx. With this fun quote from the libertarian-leaning, liberal-pablum-hating (but also annoyingly motormouthed) Penn Jilette of Penn & Teller:

Content warning; go to the jump to read.

“Saget is the dirtiest motherfucking cocksucker that ever walked the face of the earth!” said Mr. Jillette. “Doing those little bullshit family shows, playing the retarded fucking squeaky dickless dad—that’s not Saget! That’s a joke. You go to a restaurant with Saget and before he orders food, he’ll be talking to the waitress about fucking his daughters in the ass.”

Mr. Jillette advanced the theory that there is nothing more American than dirty jokes.

“One of the most important things about The Aristocrats is, when Saget is getting so filthy-dirty, he has no worry,” he said. “We live in a country where we do have freedom of speech. This movie is just a pure dream of Thomas Jefferson, in that it’s a hundred people saying anything that pops into their head, with no fear whatsoever. You know a lot of the Hollywood people—and this pissed me off so much—would say, ‘Oh, your movie’s fine in the blue states, but what about in the red states, where you get to the stupid people?’ And I would say, ‘Oh, by ‘stupid people’ you mean people who can program a machine, fix cars and perform surgeries? As opposed to we who are in Hollywood, who can’t do fucking anything?’

Nice.

I've seen bits and pieces of Saget's on- stage material and quite liked it. I think intialy it's the shock of seeing Danny Tanner using the word "fuck" but then the comedy bits were pretty good. Thanks for the link, i'll check it out.

Norm MacDonald did an appearance on the Stern radio show circa 1998 to promote his movie "Dirty Work", which was directed by Saget, and it was agreed that Saget's standup was pretty dirty before he got 'Full House." Hard to picture it, though - he looked so clean cut...

Coincidence - the Anchoress has a thing about Penn & Teller today too. The conclusion of Penn's comments is fine - he's got a good sense of reality about the people in the red states, and how silly it is for people in Hollywood to be calling "stupid" people who can do heart surgery, fix cars, program machines, etc. But he doesn't address the curious point that the people in those red states DON'T particularly like his brand of potty-mouth humor. So if it isn't because they're stupid, why is that?

Dickless dad? I thought he was playing a squkey clean little GAY dad.

I wouldn't say Gilette has potty-mouth humor generally. At least, no more than any other professional comedian. From what I gather, it's a bleak, depressing trade, and jokes like "The Aristocrats" help ease the pain.

Apart from the title, Penn & Teller's "Bullshit!" is quite a red-state-sensibility show; it debunks global warming, for crying out loud.

Maybe it's because I grew up with his authoritative voice boomingly announcing upcoming shows on Comedy Central (even back when it was The Comedy Channel, before the Ha! takeover), but I've always liked Penn. For one thing, he gave great sound bytes for "Michael Moore Hates America."

If there's a celebrity who gets it, it's Penn Gilette.

Penn Jilette's not really a motor mouth; he just got used to carrying Teller's end of the conversation, too.

No, he really is. I saw him on Celebrity Poker Showdown and he would not shut the fuck up. He was boorish and obnoxious and, worse yet, not funny.

I kind of like him. I like his Bullshit! show. I used to like his magic act. But the guy has to learn to give his fucking mouth a fucking rest.

"I used to suck dick for coke. Did you ever suck dick for marijuana?"
"Um, no, I can't say that I have."
"I didn't think so."
"Boo this man! Booooooo..."

The first time I saw Saget was on "Evening at the Improv". The dirtiest joke that made it on the show was a part of a song where he sings "I moved some dog poo aside, another quarter for me!" Other than that, his humor was wry and self-deprecating, like AFHV.

I don't object to hearing obscenities and I use them myself. But a continuous stream of them is just not funny, and it's not a substitute for actual humor and wit. Call me a prude or naive, but I like the fact that TV filters out most of it.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
