Giving The Finger to Pepsi Vs. Outrage FatigueIs it just me, or is anyone else finding their capacity to be outraged by the endless venom and stupidity of the left to be a bit spent? I think they're beginning to wear me down. There's just been so much of it -- Hitler, fictitious terrorists, "neocons/theocons," an end to the Republic, etc. -- I really just think I don't give a shit anymore. Which may be a good sign. If this sort of leftist vitriol can't even move me to anger, I'm not sure it can move a moderate to support the left's agenda (or dysgenda, or whatever you want to call the lack of an agenda). posted by Ace at 05:03 PM
CommentsWay ahead of you, buddy. It's all getting a bit tiresome. That's why I try to blog mostly stupid shit. Posted by: Ken J on May 20, 2005 05:07 PM
Mostly nowadays I just get a mental image of the cabin warning light from Airplane II: "Unbelievable Bullshit." Posted by: Guy T. on May 20, 2005 05:14 PM
It's a great point - if it's starting to bore me, it started boring moderates a long time ago. About the only thing I could get worked up over would be to hold stock and wonder about the negative PR hit. If I were a board member, I'd be more like "what the hell were we thinking"? I passed through my outrage event-horizon last year with Fahrenheit 911. Nothing those leftist shitheads do or say has the capacity to outrage me or surprise me any more. Posted by: Monty on May 20, 2005 05:20 PM
I'm morally outraged by your lack of moral outrage. This kind of attack by the left....... Oh, look! Bunniiieeesss! Posted by: Brass on May 20, 2005 05:25 PM

Facts are facts, Mr. President, and the fact is that the Sandinistas are continuing to export terror and subversion throughout Central America, throughout the world, posing an incredible danger to the lives of millions of innocent people as evidenced by the uncovered stockpile of surface-to-air missiles. What exactly is there in Ms. Nooyi's speech, other than the utter ineptitude of the writing, that so offends your PC sensibilities? She says that the US is the most prominent country in the world. She says that, we can send the wrong message unintentionally and our prominence makes this all the more apparent. That as global citizens, and as global businesses, we need to work with other people in the world. Then she relates a rambling and unfocused anecdote about Americans in a Beijing hotel. So, what here would have offended your PC sensibilities, but for your jaded ennui about liberals hating America? Is it that she sees potential problems with the way we Americans can interact with others? Oh no, not a critique of American behavior! Why does she so hate America that she hopes to better it? Posted by: vonKreedon on May 20, 2005 05:40 PM
When you consider that what these nutbars say is used for Jihad recruiting and these Jihadis kill our troops and citizens ... nope. They should be fired for such stupidity. How can they run a company and be this stupid. It just proves ... business and politics don't mix. On second thought maybe the Jihadis will just use their nuke on NYC, so I might have to reconsider my position. Posted by: bill on May 20, 2005 05:46 PM
I didn't see anything offensive in her remarks. Posted by: jamie r. on May 20, 2005 05:46 PM
When we stop being outraged it becomes commonplace and that's dangerous. A lie told often enough becomes accepted as the truth and it's nearly impossible to ever get the truth back once a lie becomes "fact". The outrageous can become the norm the same way a lie begins to be accepted as fact. When was the last time anyone got really pissed over a terrorist bombing in Baghdad? Posted by: bullwinkle on May 20, 2005 05:48 PM
I read Ms. Nooyi's speech and was struck more by the clumsy analog than by any perceived anti-Americanism. I honestly don't see what the fuss is about. I wish Hugh Hewitt and friends would use their muscle to affect change elsewhere. *shrugs* Posted by: The Warden on May 20, 2005 05:49 PM

It just proves ... business and politics don't mix. I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!!!! if the chick wants to "Give the finger", knock yourself out. HOWEVER, it you are at a venue RESPRESENTING your company (I believe she was billed as the President of Pepsico)...keep it light, fluffy, and "go out and conquer the world-ish" speech. My take on this whole ordeal is how this reflects the "diversity" of the leadership of a Fortune 100 company. I find the diversity initiatives, programs, "corporate values", blah, blah, blah...to be totally stupid and provide absolutely NO value to any organization. Her statements support my theory that the whole "Diversity" thing companies engage in is a bunch of bunk. Did Ms. Nyoobi not take into consideration those employees, vendors, and stockholders who do not hold the same political beliefs and views she does? Apparently she wasn't excercising her sensitivity training she should have been fully indoctrinated into by now. Sorry - I had to sit through a Diversity Focus Group yesterday to "discover ways the company can be more diverse". I expressed my opinions of how stupid and worthless I thought these programs are and wouldn't you know it, I have been asked to be on the Corporate Diversity Committee. Great! Just what I need, more useless meetings to add to my calendar and time spent on a worthless endeavor. Posted by: tinkerbelle on May 20, 2005 06:31 PM

I'm not getting riled up by some lame speech given by someone I never heard of at some college I don't have any feelings for one way or another. Wake me when PepsiCo issues limited edition "Iron Feliks" Dzerzhinsky cans. Posted by: Alex_fs on May 20, 2005 07:34 PM
I'm too nonplussed to post. No, seriously, this is bad and evenif it doesn't peg the outrage meter we're right to call them on it. I don't drink Pepsi stuff anyway, but they oughta apologize for being lame and talking crap about the USA. It doesn't have to be Rathergate, that's fine, but this is a big company and a big, lame-o breach of good manners and Ace is doing well to point this out. If it isn't outrageous, it ought to be and even we're a little numb, well, tough. I've discussed this before--boycott, don't boycott, whatever, and certainly don't give anyone else crap for not getting fred up about it--but Pepsi's out of line and there should be some consequences. Now Linda Foley, that's a big deal. My dander is quite up over her, thank you, and we need to hear some more about what she said. That's outrageous. Posted by: See-Dubya on May 20, 2005 08:11 PM
Theocon and neocon are good definitions. Sort of like Deaniacs, DU moonbats, Hillary dykes. They exist as powerful influence groups in their parties. Neocons? Characteristics? The big government, borrow, borrow but never raise taxes while debt explodes. More Federal power, less power to the States. Naive belief in the people's of Haiti, Liberia, Arab nations ability to embrace democracy and get it right and have the competencies and values to make it work. Military adventurism - On to Syria, On to Iran, On to Saudi Arabia, On to Sudan, America!!! (On behalf not of America, but the one country Americans are instructed they must never criticize) Few neocons actually would ever join the military... Theocrats? Characteristics? An insatiable desire, like with their Leftist college professor & MSM journalist counterparts - to want to shove their morality and beliefs down other people's throats. And use government to help them with the shoving. Theocrats had their big coming out Party with the Terri Schiavo Circus. America didn't like their show. Posted by: Cedarford on May 20, 2005 08:36 PM
Umm Bill, I don't really find you all that charming at the moment when you think that nuking my workplace is not that bad an idea. That would include myself, my family, and several of my friends. True, you'd kill millions of moonbats, but that's not a good tradeoff in my opinion, especially since I won't be around to feel the after affects. I know that many of the morons around here (NYC) have tried to put 9-11 in their rear view mirrors and move on, but there's still many of us that stand up and do the right thing. Also, if there's no NYC, where are you going to get your culture from :-p (Gotta get a dig in there as an elitest New Yorker) Posted by: NJRob on May 20, 2005 09:10 PM
Cedarford? Characteristics? Idiot, anti-semite, long-winded, annoying, likes the class warfare just a little too much, douchebag, wastes Ace's bandwidth with his tiresome predictable screeds. Posted by: zetetic on May 20, 2005 09:14 PM
If America is the world's middle finger, then Pepsi is America's piss jet. You sell sugar water, lady, not polio serum. So have a Coke and a smile and SHUT THE FUCK UP. Yeah, I'm outraged. Posted by: Livid on May 20, 2005 09:19 PM
Losing the ability to be outraged is exactly what Lefties hope happens. That makes it easier for them. Now I'm not saying we should get all up in arms about such things, just that we should make mental notes of their bullcrap so that we can remind others when it comes time to pull the lever to vote. Never forget, Ace, that you provide a valuable public service. Posted by: Birkel on May 20, 2005 09:34 PM

On the other hand - "The uncontested absurdities of today are the accepted slogans of tomorrow. They come to be accepted by degrees, by precedent, by implication, by erosion, by default, by dint of constant pressure on one side and constant retreat on the other - until the day when they are suddenly declared to be the country's official ideology." Yeah, I thought some hippies were already boycotting Pepsi, so I should drink extra (especially since there's that lemon kind now, so it even goes with fish), but I might have been thinking of something else. Pepsico dosen't own KFC, does it? Posted by: Dave Munger on May 21, 2005 01:50 AM
I was pumped for a good "outrage" after all the leadup hoopla, but it never came...yawn. She should be removed as CEO for it though - it's the sort of presentation one might expect at a 6th grade assembly. Weak. It boiled down to two thoughts. 1) Being as American, people WILL pay attention to you. 2) Don't be an asshat "ugly American", show some class. Posted by: tony on May 21, 2005 02:33 AM
Dave M, no longer. KFC is owned by YUM Brands (Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, A&W American Restaurants, and LJ Silvers). Pepsico owns Gatorade, Quaker Oats, Tropicana and Frito Lay. By the way, from the Burpsico web-site, an apology I'm deeply touched. Posted by: Dave in Texas on May 21, 2005 09:05 AM
zetetic confuses anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism. Which is really a harmful tactic when the cry "anti-semitism" is used to justify ever depredation Israel does against the population whose land and water were seized by Israel beginning in 1949. When other nations like France, Spain, S Africa, Canada have grown so tired of seeing the Zionist boot on Palestinian throats that they get past the old "anti-Zionism = anti-Semitism" defense. When they do, and their citizens are free to criticize Israel and the Occupation and colonization..... they don't care much about boys that cried "wolf" too much when REAL acts of anti-Semitism occur. It's happened in S Africa and France. Jews scurry away from Muslim gangs, the governments of those countries shrug their shoulders. Once, barely 50 years ago, Israel had 30-40 nations that were friendly to it and was making great headway in the 3rd world. But they managed to alienate all those countries but the US. In the US, the path appears to be the same, but in early stages.....distrust over where loyalties lie, agitation against Zionism in the universities, Muslim nationals organizing to oppose Israel's land grabs and oppression, intellectuals signally that Israel is too flawed to merit much admiration - in their writings....where once criticism of anything Israel did was Verboten. Why is that, zetitic? Where did all the love go, man? Posted by: Cedarford on May 21, 2005 02:32 PM
Why not just write "Jooooos bad!" and save Ace's bandwidth? Posted by: zetetic on May 21, 2005 02:39 PM
You know what the Palestinians' problem is? They LOST. Not once, not twice, but about ten f'ing times. The only reason why they're still around is because Israel didn't treat them the way they would have treated Israel, had they won. Get over it, move on, leave, get a life, fuck off. That's what LOSERS have to do. Why? Because they're LOSERS. Posted by: Dogstar on May 21, 2005 04:47 PM
Gosh, Ace, an unknown woman says, essentially, speak softly since we're carrying a big stick, and you rupture a spleen over the endless venom and stupidity of the left? Get a grip, pal. Posted by: Alan in SF on May 21, 2005 06:50 PM
Pepsico needs to fire the cunt and ship her ass back to India. A boycott is not out of the question. Posted by: Rocksolid on May 21, 2005 06:56 PM
Oh wait, you were right. Just checked my brain-dead righty phrase book and it says right there: "American tourists behave obnoxiously" = "I heart communism" Posted by: Alan in SF on May 21, 2005 07:05 PM
If she were a journalist or Democrat saying that, it wouldn't raise an eyebrow. We already know how they feel about the US. The reason it surprises is that you wouldn't expect a COO to say something this stupid and this offensive (yes, working herself into a pretzel to make the US (didnt' know we were a continent) the middle finger is stupid and offensive, FYI). On the other hand, it's probably a very good marketing ploy. Pissing off half the US is worth the effort to win the affection of the other half and the rest of the world. Let's see if Coke ups the ante! Posted by: Mark on May 21, 2005 08:36 PM
Gosh, what a spirited discussion. I came in late, but I'd like to comment on the original post. Those on the left (like me) like much of the country as it was 5 years ago. Bush and Gang, in our view, are fucking it up. It's that simple. We're trying to stop him from screwing up a country that's been working pretty well. That's it. Now continue with your shit-slinging festivities. Posted by: epoh on May 21, 2005 09:53 PM

NO one is innocent in the present plight of palestinians. Not the israels who are dangerously close to becoming the very thing they claim to be fighting (in their actions anyway) but, also not nonpalestinian arabs, who on one hand use them (palestinians) as antiwestern/zionism poster children and on the other relegate palestinians to the lowest rungs of society in daily life. It was these same arabs who first incited the fighting when isreal first was granted independence and then abandoned them when it became apparent they would lose. I'm not excusing anyone here but it will take cooperation on ALLsides to solve this terrible situation. Posted by: OWLLblue on May 22, 2005 12:41 AM

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals. The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite. Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
