ABCNews: Republicans Filibustered Civil Rights Act

This is widely believed by anyone who hasn't actually bothered to check the record, which of course the j-school geniuses at ABC News did not.

It was the Democrats, of course, who filibustered the CRA.

ABC News has now silently corrected its error. They've rewritten the story without acknowleging their rather spectacular gaffe.

As has been frequently observed, the MSM praises itself for its ostensibly "prompt and thorough" corrections, but the corrections they tend to admit are a blown middle initial, incorrect years of serving in Congress, etc.

When they blow something that really exposes their ignorance or partisan bias, they may correct (sometimes), but they do so stealthily without admitting the mistake. Sometimes they "row-back" a story -- publishing a subsequent story which corrects unacknowleged errors in a prior report -- and sometimes, as ABC News now seems to prefer, they simply do a quick rewrite.

But remember: You can trust them more than you can trust an amateur.

Or, in my case, a desperate loner with nothing left to lose.

Absolutely ridiculous, and wholly unsurprising.

Well, the facts may have been wrong, but the spirit of the story was accurate.

They're lying, but serving a higher truth.

Fake, but accur--aw, fuck it! WE HEART THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY!

(but don't tell anybody, okay?)

It's so sickingly laughable to watch Democrats whenever they praise that doddering old fool Robert Byrd, considering his personal history. Barbara Boxer, saying "Robert Byrd is the love of my life", et al. If a Republican had his story? Oh god, he'd be the personification of evil.

Posted by: Moonbat_One on May 20, 2005 01:17 PM

What we meant to say was "today's Republicans WOULD have filibustered civil rights"... Yeah, that's it. That's what we meant.

Posted by: MSM on May 20, 2005 01:27 PM

If you read the "corrected" ABC story, you'll see that they removed:

Democrats have opposed the filibuster before — in the 1960s, they accused Republicans of using it to block civil rights legislation.
but left in
According to the Senate Historical Office, the record for the longest individual speech is held by the late Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. . .
What ABC fails to note is that Thurmond was a Democrat at the time.

Hey Ace, don't forget your sources are right at least two-thirds of the time!

Heh, this is like that time somebody included a pic of Bush that was called something like "moron.jpg". The correction came pretty quickly, with, of course, zero comment.

More on the evolution of the filibuster and how southern conservatives came to love the nuclear option here.

Jon slimed:

Don't bother linking to his lame site. It's just another smear of the Today's-Republicans-Are-Yesterday's-Klan variety, with Riding on the Bus With My Sister- level historical perspective.

This is what I sent ABC News:

"Uh...your Annie Chiappetta uses Strom Thurman as an example of the "minority party, which can't win with a vote count"?

As I recall, Strom Thurman was a Democrat in 1957, and the Democrats were in the majority.

Please have Annie, or her editor, check facts before publishing.

Yours,"

Here is their response:

"Thank you for contacting us.

We appreciate you pointing this out to us. It will be passed on to the
appropriate department for review.

Thanks for logging on to ABCNews.com.

Richard

Richard doesn't have a last name. Poor kid.

Republicans lost control of the senate in 1956 when Oregon Senator Wayne Morris left the Republican party to become an independent...then later became a democrat when he realized that without party affiliation he would have no committee assignments.

The whole historical truth would have been a lot more interesting. Wayne Morse, liberal maverick, joining the party of racial intolerance because he opposed Richard Nixon's vice-Presidential status.

You know, you can tell that it is Friday just by the spike in "poor lonely me" comments by Ace:

Or, in my case, a desperate loner with nothing left to lose.

Well, not "knew," per se. Saw in homeroom. Stalked a little.

Set your calendars by it ....

Ace, are you listening to Sinatra by any chance?

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
