TNR's Publisher: MSM "complacent, self-righteous, and hopelessly in love with itself"

Ohhh, snap!:

The journalistic establishment is circling the wagons, of course. Journalists usually blame themselves last and forgive themselves first. They are taking special umbrage at the White House's indignation about Newsweek's iniquity and insisting that this is the pot calling the kettle anti-Muslim. It is certainly true that the Bush administration, at Guantánamo and at Abu Ghraib, is responsible for a good deal of anti-Americanism in the Muslim world (see Noah Feldman, "Ugly Americans," page 23). The Bush administration is not perfectly qualified to give lessons in transparency. But, if Scott McClellan should not be allowed to hide behind Michael Isikoff, neither should Michael Isikoff be allowed to hide behind Scott McClellan. The subject this week is not the misdeeds of government. The subject this week is the misdeeds of journalism. No wonder many editors and editorialists want to change the subject.

"We feel badly": With those insultingly wan words, Whitaker thinks that he has wrapped things up. All of Newsweek's penitential protestations notwithstanding, what emerges from this episode is the image of a profession that is complacent, self-righteous, and hopelessly in love with itself. Is this a terrible generalization? Well, there are 17 people who lost their lives because of the state of journalistic practice at a U.S. magazine. When American journalists do not think of themselves as heroes, they think of themselves as victims; but here they are neither. They are--I mean Isikoff and his editors--simply scavengers.

Little background: Marty Peretz was a partisan (and I don't mean that in a bad way) centrist-liberal Democrat and one of Al Gore's biggest boosters throught the eighties, nineties, and the years that come after the nineties that still don't have a good name (I call them the "nils," but no one else will follow my lead, and damnit, the decade is almost over already).

Since 9/11 he has had a full on conversion. I doubt he identifies himself as a Republican or conservative yet, but I've seen the pattern, having lived through it myself.

Having just watched the brilliant Barcelona, I'm reminded of the main character's theory on sales. There is a moment in a potential sale requiring positive affirmation on the part of the would-be buyer, as he decides whether he really is a "green-carpet kind of guy." At this point a good salesman executes Maneuver X, removing himself from the equation as much as possible, to allow the potential buyer to make that step himself without any external pressure.

So I'm not saying anything here.

I'm just suggesting to Mr. Peretz that green carpet might look pretty damn sweet in the billiards room.

They are the Naughts, not the Nils...

Or at least that's what Jethro would call them.
And he was a rocket scientist.

Yes, Marty has been en fuego the last couple of years, much the way Chris Hitchens has been. I will forgive him his championing of Gore, which I will now officially write off as "purely personal." (His Gore-love led to the unforgivable canning of Michael Kelly, though.) I once subscribed to TNR (for roughly 15 years), but I let the subscription lapse when all the "Yeah, Gore!" stuff got to be too much. Ironically (I guess that's what you'd call it), pretty much the only person who ever writes anything worth a damn for 'em these days is Peretz, but the little pisher editors in his employ do their best to keep him off the pages. (I check out TNR online from time to time, reading what I can without a subscription, and the blurbs for many of their subscription-only pieces pretty much give away the game that most of its writers are reflexively anti-Bush, in the most juvenile way.)

You can use since the turn of the century or in this decade in conversation. Everyone will know what you are referring to...

What we'll call them after 2010 is anyone's guess.

Last time around it was known as the ‘ought's from the word nought (which means nothing).

ace: Which guy in Barcelona do you identify with most?

Posted by: on May 20, 2005 01:39 PM

Peretz was a big Gore booster (Gore was his protege after all), but P. really hated/hates Kerry. Which is neat.

Just call them the "Naughties," snicker once lightly, and then slap yourself really hard for snickering at that stupid name.

But still call them the "Naughties," because you can't help but appreciate anything that lets us take ourselves a bit less seriously.

I have been calling the years after the ninties the decade of the zero's.

Barcelona one of my favorite films. Dialogue like that ain't easy to write. Ted and Fred's various discussions are truly great.

Whit Stillman (writer/director) also did The Last Days of Disco, which was pretty good. I've never seen his first film, Metropolitan.

Guy can sure write, though.

As for which character I identify most with, it is, unfortunately, Ted. I always aspired to be Fred, though. And in my journeys in Europe, I always managed to offend people like Fred.

Metropolitan - Studying for college finals, decided to walk to a local theater and sit through a movie, any movie - just needed something to help turn off my brain for a bit. Sat down for Metro not knowing/caring a thing about beforehand, somthing I never do. Turned into one of my best, favorite moviegoing experiences. Up there with Raiders of Lost Arc as a kid for me.

Stillman writes the fuck out of his stuff. Read somewhere he took 4 years on the script to Barcelona. And while I don't think people really talk like he writes - real people aren't that literary - I don't care. (Much the same way I don't think people really talk the way Mamet writes.) It's just so good.

Stillman may be my favorite modern fimmaker (though if Was Anderson ever gets over his own cutesy 'creativity', he'll give him a fight) and I think he must also be a conservative, his characters struggling with how to live moral or worthy, meaningful lives amidst 'feels-good' amorality - the only real struggle left in our cushy, nature conquered, American lives.

Anyway, don't think Metro's out on DVD yet, but if you can find it, it's wonderful.

"What we'll call them after 2010 is anyone's guess."

The Bush years.

And Stillman rules, but Last Days of Disco sucked.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
