Carnival of Corpses on TourThe Urban Grind is a bit down on it all, feeling it's just another example of the Art of Outrage. But I've always had a taste for the macabre, myself. Three tours of preserved corpses are touring the US: The corpses in all the exhibits were preserved through “plastination,” which replaces body fluids with liquid plastic. The plastic is hardened, leaving tissues intact. Bodies can then be displayed without formaldehyde or glass containers, so onlookers can come within inches of exposed organs. More gory details at the link. A cheap and macabrely-lurid thrill masquerading as art and/or science? Probably. Almost certainly, actually. But hell, they're dead anyway. They were once used for a legitimate medical purposes; if sick bastards like me can't help but want to gawk, why not? posted by Ace at 01:43 AM

Unusual show Posted by: Russ on May 10, 2005 03:02 AM
One of my friends is a pathologist, and he had a whole bin of these plasticized organs at his house one day (he was making a presentation that weekend). I held a brain, a kidney, a liver and a heart (human, of course). Very gross, and very cool. Posted by: Roland on May 10, 2005 07:34 AM
There's a really good joke about Ace and Karol's show in here somewhere, but it's not coming to me. Posted by: Megan on May 10, 2005 09:06 AM
plasticized organ - isn't that just another way of saying DILDO? See what can happen when you donate your body to science kids? I would think the liberals would be screaming about this process, cuz you know plastic's not biodegradable Is it unethical to recycle a human body? My guess is that there are some necrophiliacs with plastic fetishes that are very 'happy' right now. I'll also bet that these corpses are taken straight out of California. Aren't most women already mostly plastic there anyway? Posted by: compos mentis on May 10, 2005 10:10 AM

I much prefer the 100 naked women. When I was a ladm, all we had were cheap tinotypes and nickelodean type devices where the pictures were all of a roll and you had to crank them, but the good thing was if you really liked a scene you play it over and over. But to us it was scandalous! Posted by: old fool on May 10, 2005 10:51 AM

old fool - use of the word crank is most appropriate. And I'd like to add to all of Ace's readers that the lot of you are deranged, twisted, and highly entertaining freaks. Cheers! Posted by: compos mentis on May 10, 2005 11:27 AM
The 72 NAKED VIRGINS are much prettier than the 100 German women. We frolic and gambol in Allah's paradise, heh, heh! Who would want 100 dour old German bimbos, especially in a place like Valhalla? Posted by: 72 NAKED VIRGINS on May 10, 2005 11:42 AM
These bodies were donated to science. Instead of disected for research and education they were transformed into an art form to display the truely amazing human body. In a time of gore and horror flicks at an all time high in popularity, I find it ironic the digust generated by this art. It just reflects the immaturity and superficiality of our society as a whole. There is a metaphor in this debate. Think about it. I would donate my cadaver for this project. Posted by: Sid Crawford on May 10, 2005 11:43 AM

Were any of those corpses a certain radio show? Posted by: Dogstar on May 10, 2005 12:03 PM
If my arteries are going to be hardened, it's going to be the fun way - with lots of bacon and Krispy Kremes. Dead bodies, zombies, et al in film are different from the real thing. It's fantasy. In this case, the transition from fantasy to reality is difficult. They don't mix well. I don't know that it has anything to do with immaturity or superficiality. Maybe the 'disgust' isn't so much with the educational aspect as it is with the way it is being presented? Posted by: compos mentis on May 10, 2005 12:07 PM
To me its disheartening that fantasy is easier to accept than the science. Is it better to see photographs or a tasteful presentation of the real McCoy? Why should the transition be so difficult is my question. There is no blood and violence in this art. This may be reaching as an example, but lets use National Geographic for example. We look at a pride of lions killing and feasting on a water buffalo in the magazine and are facinated and admiring of the photography in an art form. But if you were on a safari and observed the same with your own eyes, would you be repulsed? To me I would have a greater respect for the harsh reality of nature just as I feel I would have a greater respect for the human body after seeing this art show. I think the presentation is very tasteful and mind opening personally. Posted by: Sid Crawford on May 10, 2005 12:25 PM
Brought on by the "plasticized organ" remark: Overheard one day while out on the pavement smoking, two young women, one quite distressed due to her breakup with her young man. She'd been detailing their argument to her friend, then sort-of wailed, "And then he said I used him like a protoplasmic dildo!" Posted by: Dianna on May 10, 2005 12:26 PM
Call me an old fashioned, straight laced old geezer, but I find the exhibitionist aspect of this the most disturbing. Also to respond to one of the commenters here who compared this exhibit to photos of animals devouring their prey in National Geographic magazine, all I have to say is there's a difference between human beings and animals. It has to do with being created in G-d's image. On the other hand, I can understand the comparison if you view humans as nothing more than sophisticated animals. Posted by: Zelda on May 10, 2005 12:53 PM
Dianna Posted by: 27 DYSLEXIC VIRGINS on May 10, 2005 12:54 PM
Humans are wired to set themselves apart from other animals. Seeing big cats kill a water buffalo is 'natural.' Seeing them kill a human would not be. As long as you are able to keep from thinking of the buffalo's fear and pain, you can view the scene as a normal thing. When we see dead humans, being human ourselves, the feeling and nature of death hits much closer to home, so to speak. People see horror flicks, squirm in their seats, scream, cringe, etc. but when they walk out of the theatre, they know no one really died or was hurt. When people actually see a display of a skinned human, they immediately 'feel' the process. At least that's how I view it. Then there's the whole 'the human body is a sacred temple' thing, which I understand. Maybe if tastefully done this will catch on. It's going to take some 'hardening,' so to speak : ) Posted by: compos mentis on May 10, 2005 12:54 PM
Call me an old fashioned, straight laced old geezer, but I find the exhibitionist aspect of this the most disturbing. That was my first reaction too. But afterthought says "so what is wrong with it?" Rationally speaking, nothing. I guess that's where the rub is. I wonder what the church says about it all? Posted by: F Scott on May 10, 2005 12:59 PM
I think the difference in the two point of views is quite possibly as simply as you put it, compos. The body being viewed as a temple. I personally feel once I am dead my body is no longer of use... ashes to ashes, dust to dust. My spirit has left and the shell is empty. I have no problem with the idea of being cremated where as some people find the idea horrifying. Not to say there shouldn't be enormous respect for anybody's remains. Then again I dont view a donated body as desecration if thats what the individual wanted. I actually have huge respect for those individuals who left their remains for science. Science as Art, quite the controversial topic for certain. Posted by: Sid Crawford on May 10, 2005 01:34 PM
Hypothetical quesion - What if you attend one of these presentations and you recognize one of the 'models' as someone you had sex with? What if you see the person and say, "Holy Hell! That's Bob!!" And before the women can chime in, let's just get the "Well there he is, stiff at last" comment out of the way. Posted by: compos mentis on May 10, 2005 02:53 PM
My friend had the opportunity to see both the German [original] exhibit and later the Chinese knock-off. She pronounced the German one fascinating. Respectful of both the human body in itself and the particular [voluntary] subjects. Her response to the chinese exhibit differed; a poorly done process and a niggling doubt that the subjects of the process were voluntary. Posted by: Claire on May 10, 2005 03:01 PM
