Guardian UK: Maybe Bush Was Right

Hell just got a little nippier. I mean, it's still sweater-weather, but it's not balmy like it was before:

The greatest danger for those of us who dislike George Bush is that our instincts may tip over into a desire to see his foreign policy objectives fail. No reasonable person can oppose the president's commitment to Islamic democracy. Most western Bushophobes are motivated not by dissent about objectives, but by a belief that the Washington neocons' methods are crass, and more likely to escalate a confrontation between the west and Islam than to defuse it.

Such scepticism, however, should not prevent us from stepping back to reassess the progress of the Bush project, and satisfy ourselves that mere prejudice is not blinding us to the possibility that western liberals are wrong; that the Republicans' grand strategy is getting somewhere.

...

My own contacts say that the situation is improving, but remains precarious. They suggest that criminal anarchy is gradually being stemmed. The recruitment and training of Iraqi security forces is going a little better.

...

It seems wrong for either neocon true believers or liberal sceptics to rush to judgment. We of the latter persuasion must keep reciting the mantra: "We want Iraq to come right, even if this vindicates George Bush."

Thanks to OgreGunner.

These guys just can't say it. You'd think they were on ledges or something.

Wait a minute ... is this limey prick suggesting that liberals want things to go bad, with people getting hurt or even killed just to spite Bush????

They would never do that. Never.

'Cause that would mean that they are nothing but a bunch of hate-filled, unprincipled, self-absorbed, hypocritical assholes who put their own petty kneejerk emotions ahead of other people's welfare.

'Cause that would mean that they have no affirmative agenda of their own and define themselves solely as anti-Republican.

And that's just plain wrong.

This voice will soon be drowned out by the same revisionists who say Reagan accomplished nothing.

But seeing them eat even a light snack of crow is so wonderful.

As things get better "over there" (a big if) we're going to see a lot more of this Liberal recanting.

As JFK famously said: Victory has a thousand fathers, while defeat is an orphan and since he stole the credit for this line he didn't create, he ought to know.

Keep in mind al-Guardian is a traditional Labour paper.

There is a big election days away in the UK, if yuh haven't noticed!.

They don't want the New Democrats who are rapidly anti-war to badly hurt the Labour Party. So a little bucking up the Labour base to stay Labour makes perfect sense for The Guardian.

Err ....not rapidly....rabidly....like Blair will be dancing around like a rabid monkey if the Labour seats win by greater than 5%.

First there was admitted liberal, Mark Brown saying he might vote Republican in 2008 while asking, "What if Bush has been right about Iraq all along?"

Then Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid admitted current Western liberal thinking was sinking the DNC.

Now The Guardian, the British left-wing newspaper that advocated the assassination of President Bush last Fall has an article postulating that liberals may be wrong and conservatives may be right.

Think the Left has their iPods tuned to R.E.M. right about now?
