I Hate To Be Johnny-One-Note, But...

Slublog notes that the media has a new obsession: the difficulty the armed forces are having in meeting recruitment goals.

You will not be surprised to learn that they weren't quite such bears on the topic when it reared its head -- repeatedly -- when Clinton was in office.

Dammit Ace! There's a freakin' war on!

I just don't get how this relates....

This is a problem that is largely affected by the current media focus and interpretation.

Soldiers join for many reasons, patriotism, college money, the cool hats (do not ignore the power of cool hats), but they stay for other reasons.

Over time (and interestingly enough, as they mature) those interests tend to morph into a weird, pragmatic, idealistic whole. Not everyone is like that, but enough to give it a unique military ethos.

Soldiers are both more conservative, and more cosmopolitan than the general public as a whole. Those that stay, usually do because they like the mix.

NYT story:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/03/national/03recruit.html?8hpib

Note how "1999, the last year [the Army]missed its active-duty recruitment goal" is skillfully buried in the 9th paragraph.
