UNbelievable: FBI Agent Has Tapes Implicating Kofi?

Norm Coleman (best damn freshman Senator, evah!) is asking hypothetical questions as if they're not quite completely hypothetical.

Paul Volcker is doing his best to prevent the FBI agent (one of the pair who resigned over the matter) from testifying before Congress, claiming some sort of "diplomatic immunity."

Diplomatic immunity? Where's Danny Glover when you need him?

Uhhhhh... last I heard, diplomatic immunity is possessed by the person, no the country. If a diplomat wants to waive immunity and accept an arrest, I think he may do so.

And... how the heck does diplomatic immunity apply to a US citizen after the termination of his association with the UN? For how long does Volcker imagine this "immunity" persists for?

Anybody With a Wife This Hot Must Know What He's Talking About Update: Not too shabby.

I'm thinking, about this, Danny Glover would be barricading the "Immunity Forevah" conference room doors.

I agree about Coleman, though.

I love Minnesota, my birthplace.

Too bad I live in sucky sucky MD now.

Norm... or as I call him "Noam".

Coleman's been quite the bulldog on this, hasn't he? I'm sure he's thinking about boosting his visibility and career prospects, but that's not inconsistent with doing a good job. The guy's worth six Mel Martinezes.

Of course, Johnny Coldcuts is worth six Mel Martinezes. I'd pop out right now and buy a baloney sandwich, but I've got nothing smaller than a ten and that's worth at least a dozen junior Florida senators.

And, it just could be that Volcker has alluded to the pact with the Dev...err, with, um, you see, there was this great big desk in an empty room with a fire blazing in one corner atop a high, pointy sky scraper in Manhattan where Al Pacino liked to dance around and sing, "It Happened in Moneterey" and then he had a party and with all these beautiful, important people and someone promised diplomatic immunity for as long as the giant plaster thing above his desk upstairs continued to writhe, and then...

We must get Bolton and his ferocious moustache on this immediately.

Posted by: Monty on May 2, 2005 05:08 PM

If the inquiry is above board and Volcker's connections to that Canadian company that had Oil-For-Food dealings aren't relevant, why would the inquiry board members even require immunity? Kind of weird Coleman starts asking these hypotheticals and exploring the possibility of getting Agent Parton to testify, and Volcker and the UN start asking for immunity that overrides a subpoena.

Posted by: Moonbat_One on May 2, 2005 05:09 PM

This is an interesting story that I believe will get more interesting. Maybe it's all about nothing, but it's hard for me to come up with a sensible reason for Volcker's words/actions here.

Have you ever seen Norm's wife? Holy crap, my penis is majestic.

Master: I had no idea :O

My penis is hilarious.

Well, if the UN says the law says one thing, and the US says it means another, who wins?

Unfortunately the answer to that is no longer as cut-and-dried as I might like.

Posted by: See-Dubya on May 2, 2005 06:00 PM

Help me out here-
If the investigation is supposed to be independent from the UN, how can diplomatic immunity be invoked in the name of the UN for the 'independent' investigators??

Posted by: Uncle Jefe on May 2, 2005 06:03 PM

In that pic...doesn't Coleman look a little too much like the Green Goblin.

Posted by: Joel B. on May 2, 2005 06:09 PM

I didn't notice what HE looked like.

Posted by: Master of None on May 2, 2005 06:11 PM

Coleman's wife....

She looked so familiar...I knew I remembered her from somewhere. Many at the Repub National Convention were talking about her.

I don't understand how diplomatic immunity can apply in this case. Parton is not a foreign diplomat or member of a foreign government. This is a really unfortunate move by Volcker in so many ways. Diplomatic immunity is already under fire and this just plays to the image that it is a frivalous smoke-screen for wrong doing. The UN absolutely needs to start taking a "Caesar's Wife" view of its virtue and should be bending over to avoid any stonewalling of any investigation into potential wrong doing. This stonewalling makes it so much easier for the unilateralists to argue that the UN is and should be irrelevant.

Norm's wife is smoking hot.

Posted by: vonKreedon on May 2, 2005 06:15 PM

His wife is an actress who participated in the Vagina Monologues. ....interesting

Posted by: tinkerbelle on May 2, 2005 06:22 PM

I'm pretty certain there's some way for a foreign government (or organization treated like a foreign government for these purposes, like the UN) to give diplomatic immunity even to US citizens while they are in fact diplomatic agents of that country or NGO... but I can't imagine it lasts forever.

Posted by: ace on May 2, 2005 06:22 PM

Ok, Norm looks A LOT older than her. What is the story? Is she the 2nd trophy wife or what?

"Too bad I live in sucky sucky MD now."

What part of Maryland? I used to live in Montgomery County (Olney School District), and it seriously sucked. The ratio of assholes to the general population (roughly 40%) is about 5 times what you would expect in a normal county, and about 11 times what you would encounter anywhere in Texas, based on my experience.

The problem is that Montgomery County is almost entirely populated by civil servants and people who, directly or indirectly, are government contractors. It's hard not to throttle your neighbors when they believe their role in life is to write regulations to help the rest of the nation lead their lives.

On the other hand, when you get out of the D.C. 'burbs, Maryland is really beautiful and the people are great. The state politicians are totally corrupt (remember Spiro Agnew?), but so what, it's a gorgeous place.

Is it me, or does anyone else wonder why we have to go to an *Australian* newspaper to read about this?

Posted by: johnd01 on May 2, 2005 09:54 PM

You're not the only one john.

But remember, the only media bias we have to worry about is conservative bias. Just ask Al Franken.

Tsunami: Prince George's County, or as I like to call it, "Montgomery Ghetto".

I'm finally graduating from the school system in a few weeks. Lord is it awful.

I think Coleman knows there's no tapes and is bluffing to try to stir up enough ink to reenergize the issue. Hooorah for him, that takes balls and smarts. Unfortunately for us, besides diplomatic immunity, Kofi is a black african and therefore has double race card immunity. If he were a white american, he'd have resigned a long time ago under immense pressure.

Posted by: 72 DRUNKEN VIRGINS on May 3, 2005 11:41 AM

If Coleman knows there is no tape and is blowing hot air that is shameful demagoguery, the creation of a hot issue with no substance. It is not something that responsible citizens should encourage.

Yes, yes, I know that people on the left do this. It is shameful then also.

Posted by: vonKreedon on May 3, 2005 01:34 PM

vonKreedon

The facts already speak for themselves. And if he can breathe life back into a stalled, whitewashed investigation by blowing smoke to attract a PC world press that gives a pass to black africans simply because they are black africans, more power to him!
