The Real King Arthur, and Real Buried Treasure

Just because we're arguing about the "real King Arthur" in the comments... VonKreedon (who played a fantasy role-playing game while in jail, remember) suggests anyone interested check out this site about the "historical" Arthur.

I like this tip from Fat Kid a little more:

Friends Find Buried Treasure in Backyard

METHUEN, Massachusetts (AP) -- It's the stuff of fantasies, and Tim Crebase found it buried under two feet of earth in his own backyard.

..

Crebase said the find came three weeks ago when he and Villcliff were trying to dig up a small tree.

Crebase, 23, heard a thud and saw that he'd hit a piece of wood. Another look, and he saw the wood was part of a two-foot-wide box.

He ripped the top off and found nine rusted cans that he and Villcliff, 27, cracked open to find about 1,800 bills, including more than 900 $1 bills, 200 $2 bills, and 300 $20 bills dated from 1899 to 1929.

There were also piles of gold and silver certificates and scores of notes from local banks in Methuen, Haverhill, Amesbury, Newburyport and beyond.

[The treasure was subsequently valuated by an expert as being worth in excess of $100,000.]

"I'm a pessimist; I was waiting until I got a professional review before I jumped to any conclusions," Villcliff said. "Tim, however, was singing and dancing. He was ranting like a rabid monkey."

I'm glad these guys found it. They deserve it.

Historical, my tail. There's not even ONE mention of Monty Python.

For what it's worth...I have a book I use for research on the History of Cornwall by F.E. Halliday that talks about Arthur. Talks about Tristan and how his romance with La Beale Isoud becomes interwoven with the history of Arthur and how Tristan goes on to become one of the knights of the roundtable.

First mention of Arthur is in Histora Britonum, a compilation of the year 685 which is known by the name of Nennius who said that the Saxons increased in numbers in Britain until they were checked by Arthur or Arthurus who used to fight against them in company with the kings of Briton. Arthur defeated the Saxons in 12 battles, the sites of which cannot be identified with certainty.

The last battle was at Mons Badonis, the Badon Hill victory of about 500. Supposedly “960 men fell before the assault of Arthur and no one felled them save he alone.” This is said to have started the legend of Arthur.

The “historical Arthur” link is a good reference too.

"SithChick"? Ace, you have a new alias for when you're trolling the star wars forum?

if so, you just pulled another "hoke" and forgot who you were...

Say it with me folks: "Salivating... "

Sorry to disappoint you, fatkid, but I'm not Ace, just a loyal servant of the Empire.

Um, Arthur is the product of a 60 year error in the Venerable Bede. Gildas' On the Ruin of Britain doesn't ever mention him, only Aurelius.

Sorry.

Nennius is frequently spelt "Ninius." Bad joke. Very bad joke, but one I enjoy.

Can I just say...any blog that can have intelligent commentary on the Venerable Bede ...AND make squeakhole jokes....

It's...it's like I've died and gone to heaven.

*sniff*

It happened in Massachusetts, so I imagine their fortune will be taxed to death. They'd have been better off just reburying it.

Is found treasure taxed as a capital gain or is it considered income?
After all, he had to DIG to get it. That's labor, right?

Whoops!

Those guys got arrested. Not their money.

Just read the same news item over at The Corner on NRO and came bustling over here to inform Ace. Damn you're quick, lauraw.
