The Vicious Left: CafePress Offered "Kill Bush" Shirts

Just a bit of harmless "protected political speech," as the Ninth Fucking Circuit instructs us.

Michelle Malkin has a pic of the "Kill Bush" t-shirt, as well as other fine products available from the Homicidal Left.

And she links to Powerline, featuring an article on a pro-assassination "art" exhibit.

A caveat: I am searching for this stuff myself, to confirm that Cafe Press actually offered this crap. I have not yet been able to find it. The pop-up says the offering was pulled and is no longer available. I guess I'd like to see a cached page of it.

I'm running with it, though, not quite nailed down and solid, because I pretty much trust Malkin.

I know a lot of bloggers sell merch through Cafe Press, and I wouldn't want to depress their sales. But... if this is real, there should be a permanent boycott against Cafe Press by all people -- not just conservatives -- who believe that political differences should be solved by political processes, rather than a lunatic's rifle.

I suppose Cafe Press has a defense -- they don't check to see what's being offered on their site before it goes up, and they do seem to have pulled it. I'd like a full explanation and apology, though.

Confirmed: By commenters, who saw this yesterday. Drudge linked and Limbaugh mentioned. That's enough.

Cafe Press had better issue a grovelling apology and a promise to patrol its political material much more carefully or I swear we will drive these bastards out of business within a month.

Self-Serving Mercenary Greed Update: Why not protest Cafe Press by buying a snazzy t-shirt from a guy who takes a firm position against political violence?

Uhhh... yeah, I know, the Mencken quote. Metaphor, you retards.

Remember... the ordering period may be closed at any moment.

EDIT: I'm just linking Michelle Malkin right now for the t-shirt. I've been told that Cafe Press likes suing bloggers right off INTERNET.

Sorry to be a pussy, but I don't feel like dealing with it. Michelle's got juice; she can take these guys on.

I saw it yesterday on the cafepress site. (I think I got there from LGF.) Not that you'd take my anonymous word over Michelle Malkin's anyhow. But for that it's worth, I can confirm that they really were selling that shirt.

Posted by: SJKevin on April 13, 2005 02:15 PM

Limbaugh mentioned this in the first hour of the program; a caller said that he checked the site a little later and Cafe Press had a note that the item was removed and then even a little later it now is routed to "Pro Bush" items.

Posted by: JFH on April 13, 2005 02:17 PM

They had a ton of anti/kill bush stuff there. When Drudge first posted the link, it took you right to the sales site.

Posted by: Iblis on April 13, 2005 02:18 PM

Just sent you some screenshots of stuff still available on CafePress.

Y'know, I'm just not buying that Ace is really all that worked up about a stupid T-shirt. I think he's just trying to distract us from the homo thing.

How many votes do we have for getting back to squeekholes and lesbians with cocoa butter?

Aye.

Posted by: Michael on April 13, 2005 02:34 PM

Yes, the Mencken quote is a metaphor, but that's the exactly the type of subtlety that would get lost in the shuffle if Cafe Press did decide to "patrol its political material much more carefully."

I don't see any reason to hate on Cafe Press. Their about page says "[r]oughly 14,000 new, unique items are added each day." I don't think it would be feasible for them to police everything, even if it were desirable.

Direct the rage toward the person who made the shirt; who, of course, is just some random asshole in his basement, presumably.

Posted by: Hubris on April 13, 2005 02:41 PM

Nay, michael, nay.

Posted by: hobgoblin on April 13, 2005 03:07 PM

Nay, michael, nay.

No fair trying to vote twice.

Posted by: Michael on April 13, 2005 03:17 PM

Blaming Cafe Press for carrying that shirt is like blaming Amazon for carrying Michael Moore. If you're going to demand groveling apologies from CafePress, you're going to have to demand groveling apologies from just about every other service provider and retailer out there. And CafePress carries both left- and right-wing items as well as scads of non-political stuff. See, for instance, the Sore Loserman gear.

I'm not defending the shirt's message; like Hubis, I think you just shouldn't confuse CafePress with the guy who made up the shirt.

BTW, ManSansQ tips me off to what appears to be the shirt-maker's statement on withdrawing the item.

(Yeah, yeah, full disclosure, the site I work at offers its stuff through CafePress. It's not like I see a dime off it, though. Sigh.)

Posted by: Maxie Zeus on April 13, 2005 03:32 PM

It's only b/c the cocoa butter seems to necessarily imply the squeakholes.

I was just voting emphatically, not twice (runs away to Philadelphia where it's OK to vote twice)

Posted by: hobgoblin on April 13, 2005 03:51 PM

Maxie,

This is a whole different breed of dog. This was a t-shirt that endorsed the assassination of an American president.

That's a bit, uhhh, over the line, is it not?

I hated Clinton, and I NEVER would have peddled a t-shirt like that, nor written anything for public consumption suggesting such a hateful and DANGEROUS thought.

Posted by: ace on April 13, 2005 03:59 PM

Y'know, our democracy is preserved by tradition and civil political norms, not by the Constitution, which is just a piece of paper. A great piece of paper, but a lot of Latin American countries have had great pieces of paper, too, and they quickly degenerated into civil war or rule by savage military juntas.

We tread on very dangerous ground when we begin treating invitations to political violence as just something we have to live with.

Posted by: ace on April 13, 2005 04:02 PM

I saw your reponse on the other thread, thanks; came back here so I wouldn't be guilty of switching the topic of that thread.

I absolutely agree with your point that the shirt is wrong, I just don't see Cafe Press as "peddling" it in the traditional sense. That is, they didn't create it, nor did they choose it to include in their wares. I see Cafe Press as a tool that people use to become merchants themselves. It's more comparable to accessible printing press machinery with automatic attendant self-advertising than a publishing house making editorial decisions.

They derive income from the sales, but if someone uses the tool in a foolish fashion, I don't blame them any more than I blame gun manufacturers when someone uses a weapon foolishly.

Ace,

what did you think of Ann Coulter's questioning of whether Clinton should be assassinated or impeached in "High Crimes and Misdemeanors"

Posted by: izzadem on April 13, 2005 04:16 PM

what did you think of Ann Coulter's questioning of whether Clinton should be assassinated or impeached in "High Crimes and Misdemeanors"

I remember no such comment, and I suspect you will be unable to provide a cite, as it is almost certainly a liberal urban myth.

If she actually did make such a comment, I would condemn it as dangerous and vicious.

'kay?

Posted by: ace on April 13, 2005 04:21 PM

Hubris,

I did say they had a defense along the lines you suggest.

Nevertheless, an apology is required.

Posted by: ace on April 13, 2005 04:23 PM

First, an oops: I got this item mixed up with the "Suicide Delay" T-shirt. So, never mind on that Goodwin link. [/emily litella]

I think the shirt is so far over the line that it leaves the line in some other dimension. But I think the problem is with the dipshit who designed the shirt, less so with CafePress. Was it poor judgement on CafePress's part to carry it? Hell, yes. You want to boycott them? That's fine, though I don't like boycotts for the same reasons you eloquently give in the next post up. But concentrating your fire on CafePress seems to me like concentrating it on booksellers or publishers instead of on idiot authors. That's all I'm saying. There's a much more deserving target. CafePress may be stupid and mercenary for offering it, but the real evil lies elsewhere.

Posted by: Maxie Zeus on April 13, 2005 04:28 PM

No doubt.

But I've apologized for stuff that's appeared on my site, even though I might not have written it.

I don't know if there's some legal responsibility here, but I know there is a moral and ethical one.

Shit, there's a mercenary PR one. And if they can't apologize-- well, fuck 'em. Their crap sucks anyway.

Jeez, I was nearly done with a line of Hellary mdse: A tee with her (worst) pic on the front - with the motto "Buy A Stake In Hellary", and picture of a wooden stake and maul on the back. Also available; authentic wooden stake and maul made by an American craftsman (me). Could be limited, numbered edition. Free enterprise or hate speech?

This is happening at the right time huh?

Tom DeLay just spoke at a conference which suggested that it was jutifiable to kill federal judges! One person surely suggested that the Stalin idea "no man, no problem" was a good idea when dealing with "activist judges".

They are more or less telling people to kill judges they don't agree with. It's awful weird that Rush and Michelle Malkin both decided to talk about this and not that!

Don't belive me? Google that Stalin quote and you'll find it.

If she actually did make such a comment, I would condemn it as dangerous and vicious.

Well, I can't find an actual page citation - and I'm not going to go buy the damn thing and actually read it. But here's the quote:

"In this recurring nightmare of a presidency, we have a national debate about whether he 'did it,' even though all sentient people know he did. Otherwise there would be debates only about whether to impeach or assassinate."

Perhaps one of the honest souls here who actually owns a copy can verify or deny it?

BTW, I think the shirt is immature, stupid, and disgusting.

Posted by: izzadem on April 13, 2005 06:55 PM

Please provide a citation that Delay has called for the death of federal judges. Sen. Coryn, also from Texas, made some recent comments that got dowdified into sounding like he advocated violence, but that kerfuffle has since died down since the Left realized it was going nowhere.

As for CafePress, this Godwin guy's site is still there. If they meant their terms of service, they'd stop doing business with him, and people like him. As long as the only punishment for doing this sort of thing is a slap on the wrist, they deserve all the flack they get.

And I see we've got two posting in a row from people who can make nasty accusations, but are too lazy to back them up. Can't let reality intrude on our little Leftwing fantasies, can we?

No wonder you Leftists are held in such low esteem outside your little enclaves.
