Killin' Stuff Real Good From Your BarcaloungerSliding his computer mouse around until he locates a moving target, the hunter sets the animal in his sites and pulls the rifle's trigger with a click of his finger. Down goes a wild boar. Another trophy bagged. Yet in this case it's not a video game. It's a new kind of hunting experience in which people anywhere in the world can sit at home and target real game by controlling a gun in a remote location. To supporters, it's a way to allow the disabled, among others, to enjoy the thrill of hunting. But critics see it as a form of video slaughter. "Disabled"? Is laziness a disability now? If so, where's my check? I've gotta side with the PETA crowd on this one. If you're going to plug something, at least have the common courtesy of showing up for the kill. Indeed, the concept of live-action hunting - done over the Internet - is raising the hackles of everyone from animal-rights activists to hunting groups to gun advocates. As a result, lawmakers in 14 states are now trying to ban the practice, including Texas, where the only such online hunting facility exists. I don't see this as spreading like wildfire, so this legislation is probably unnecessary. I'm just curious what "libertarians" have to say about this. Under the system, a person can control a camera and a firearm, shooting at real targets in real time, from a computer anywhere. For an additional fee, the meat or head can be shipped to the hunter. Here's an alternative version of "the system:" You get to scan around an already-shot video taken from an episode of Field & Stream Video Diary. You get to pull a "trigger," which then advances you to already-shot video of an animal being killed, or two lions humping each other, depending on whether or not your "shot" is anywhere near the target. If you pay an additional fee of $150, they'll buy you some $3.59/lb buttsteak from the local A&P and send it to you labled "Here's that 'bear' you shot, jagoff." Uggghhhhh. I'm personally offended that these resources aren't being devoted to finding some sort of digital-masking technology that will allow me to watch porn without being assaulted every three seconds by the sight of hairy man-ass (HMA). Thanks to LauraW. Important Nanotech News! Scientists have just developed a new nanotech "pet," the "Really Little Buddy," which responds to a wide variety of commands, including "1" and "0." posted by Ace at 05:45 PM

I don't actually see the ethical problem here. Posted by: lauraw on April 12, 2005 05:53 PM
I guess it's not an ethical problem per se. Who cares how something gets killed, if you intend to kill it anyway? It's just... goofy. I object to this based on the fact that it is irredeemably goofy. Posted by: ace on April 12, 2005 05:55 PM
Oh, wait. You were probably referring to Hairy Man Ass. Posted by: ace on April 12, 2005 05:55 PM
Yeah, goofy. Yeah. Posted by: lauraw on April 12, 2005 06:03 PM
i thought we just passed a law last week here in texas banning this... Posted by: johnny on April 12, 2005 06:08 PM
yep, it's been banned already: http://www.ksat.com/news/4361262/detail.html Posted by: johnny on April 12, 2005 06:13 PM
Yeah, I find this all kinds of offensive. Don't get me wrong, we Air Force pukes have no problems killing people via remote control and watching their vehicles brew up on closed-circuit TV. But c'mon, those are TERRORISTS. What did that bear ever do to you? Now, is it time for my steak yet? Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on April 12, 2005 06:38 PM
Let's go with this concept, to a slightly different place: Suppose you could "fuck" by controlling a penis and "thrusting it" remotely, via Internet connection? And for another $200, they would mail you some sticky pubes and soiled t.p.? Posted by: Dogstar on April 12, 2005 06:50 PM
Ace, you should really check out my blog sometime. You would have had this story April 6th. http://rightwingsparkle.blogspot.com/2005/04/here-is-idea-i-would-never-have.html Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on April 12, 2005 06:58 PM
RWS, You should check out ACE's blog sometime. You'd realize ace wasn't even HERE on April 6. dingleberry. (oops, that just slipped) Posted by: hobgoblin on April 12, 2005 07:06 PM
You almost put your finger on it yourself, Ace: If you're going to plug something, at least have the common courtesy of showing up for the kill. I myself would never kill an animal under any circumstances (I let other people do that for me), but the idea of someone sitting in a remote, bloodless location and clicking a mouse is really, really sick. Posted by: CraigC on April 12, 2005 07:06 PM
Actually, this is a great idea for disabled hunters. If limited solely to those who were physically incapable of stalking game, there's no problem. From a personal morality standpoint though, they should be REQUIRED to pay for ALL the meat to be shipped to their physical address. Hunting is for meat, not for sport. Posted by: hobgoblin on April 12, 2005 07:10 PM
No thanks. I'll just keep on buying my meat and leather shoes at the store, like always. I was under the impression that part of the "thrill of the hunt" was the actual going outside and hunting part. I mean, I guess some people get a real jones from 1) playing video games, and 2) getting packages of dead animal heads in the mail, and maybe this small group of... humans are a market of some sort for this sort of thing. But I can't see any normal videogame player/hunter wannabe really getting into this. Then again, my estimation of human nature is always being revealed as too pollyannish. Rightwingsparkle, I do check out your blog from time to time. I try to keep an eye on the right wing honies. But my busy schedule trolling for porn and making crank calls to Oliver Willis sometimes interferes with my blog-reading. Posted by: ace on April 12, 2005 07:17 PM
Look, people, I AM LAZY. I've said this a thousand times. DO you not believe me? If you got somethin' good, tip me. Shoot me an email. It saves me the bother of all that readin'. Posted by: ace on April 12, 2005 07:18 PM
Ace, I sure hope you meant "honey's" and not homies there....;-) Now you could have been trying to be all "honied" or "honeyed" with me, which means to cajole with sweet talk. (no, pervs, there is no 'r' in that word) Us southern girls are all about that. Posted by: Rightwingsparkle on April 12, 2005 08:23 PM
I think this service is offensive. It makes hunting into a kind of pornography. The point of hunting is to hunt, not just to kill. It involves some skill. It requires practice. It helps you participate in nature rather than just observe it. It involves the smell of the early morning air in the woods, watching the sun come up, listening to the cacaphony of the birds at dawn.

Ace, I'd like to thank you for opening my eyes to the nanotech revolution. I had been hearing about it for a long time but never really looked into it until yesterday. I've been day-trading since I retired so I can pay my taxes and part of everyone else's that thinks conservatives are greedy so I bought a good-sized block of Accelrys yesterday and it went up 25 cents today. That's a 4.55% one day return, not too bad for a nanovirgin. Now I can pay more of someone else's taxes and afford T-sirts too! Got any more tips? Posted by: bullwinkle on April 12, 2005 08:26 PM
Ace i enjoy your blog and you might possibly enjoy ours. it's not video and you might even wonder what the hell some of it is. i know sometimes i do and i help create it. i promise my hairy ass is nowhhere to be seen. c.g, [SERIOUS CONTENT WARNING: The link below the post leads to an erotica site. I'm not deleting it, but be aware it contains some hard-core shots. Seriously. WARNING. - -added by Ace] Posted by: Lili G and CJG on April 12, 2005 08:37 PM
To me, this ranks up there with the guys who tie down game and shoot it. I guess the idea of trapsing through the woods and having to have the skill to stalk prey, and the skill to shoot is too much for them. Posted by: Cracka Jack on April 12, 2005 08:40 PM
Lile G & CJG, I actually saw your site from a link through technorati. It's, ummm, certainly one of the more interesting blogs I'm linked on. But please do me a favor and provide a CONTENT WARNING to your comments if you include a link. I talk a little dirty here, but I have a rule about linking actual erotica. Well, it's a rule that has gotten bent a few times, but it's a rule. Posted by: ace on April 12, 2005 08:49 PM
Uh, Ace, they already came up with a digital masking technology to get rid of HMA. It's called "girl on girl action". You might want to look into it... Posted by: Squatch on April 12, 2005 10:07 PM
Actually, Slashdot mentioned some guy who claimed to let you control his Christmas lights on the internet... he even ended up on CNN and FoxNews. It turned out, in the end, that it was a giant hoax. So, it wouldn't shock me if this sort of thing was a hoax as well. I've been hearing about this one for quite some time though, so I have a feeling it's the real deal. Posted by: Dave S on April 12, 2005 10:37 PM
Hobgoblin: Actually, this is a great idea for disabled hunters. If limited solely to those who were physically incapable of stalking game, there's no problem. States are getting away from special deals for the disabled. Think of the people you see with handicapped parking privileges. Many just too fat to walk. No outdoors sports followers wish to see disabled people shooting animals from airplanes, pick-up trucks, by remote TV. Same with allowing whole families with ATVs wreck "trails and tranquility" in state and national parks - because half of them, including the 8 and 10 year old - weigh over 200 lbs and have diabetes, thus need a "special permit" ATV to push their masses around, and then the family, to accompany the huskers, gets their special treatment and gets to ride ATVs to accompany the "handicapped ones" ripping 30 MPH swaths through mountain meadows. From a personal morality standpoint though, they should be REQUIRED to pay for ALL the meat to be shipped to their physical address. Making them eat the meat won't give them a feeding of morality. Hunting is for meat, not for sport. Spoken like someone who has never hunted. Even subsistence hunters allowed in Alaska have a hunting code. Hunting is a sport. If it was all about the meat - then salt licks, jacklighting, snares and use of dog packs would be legal. For waterfowl, then nets and shooting them on the water would be OK. All that is illegal in most jurisdictions because hunting is a regulated sport. Same as fishing. If fishing was all about the meat, you would simply poison or dynamite a pond or stream, and scoop up all the ones you thought you wanted to eat. Unless you are a native American elegable as a subsistence hunter, the only "just for meat", not at all for sport, hunting allowed is down your supermarket aisles. Not that game meat isn't welcome, even stretch your expenses in rural areas...an elk, moose can save hundreds of dollars in grocery costs....but hunting is still a sports activity. Ace, I think you may have missed one of the best angles to this story-- now you can hunt down Ice-T from the comfort of your living room! Cheers, Posted by: Dave at Garfield Ridge on April 13, 2005 09:34 AM
Here's the story of a man paralyzed from the neck down who used the service. Posted by: Hubris on April 13, 2005 02:08 PM
Cedarford, why must you be an ASSHOLE every time you open your mouth? I actually agree on the "huskers stuff, but then you throw in "Spoken like someone who has never hunted. " I hunt Elk every year. Without bait, without scent (except to cover) with a rifle, and in the Coast Range. It's a HUNT, not a "sport" in the sense of the term that it's NEVER all for shits and giggles, and leave to meat, take the head. If you knew anythign about hunting, maybe you'd realize that. There is a difference between "hunting" and "sport hunting" the examples of which (spotlighting, etc) you cite yourself. Indeed, you sir, seem to be someone whose only claim to holding a gun is masturbating your inch long stiffy. Why must you be such a cocklord? It's tiresome and reflects incredibly poorly on both your upbringing and maturity. I mean, flames based on something are one this, But the spittle flying from your shit each and every post is just fucking lame. Posted by: hobgoblin on April 13, 2005 02:29 PM
Hobby - Hunting is for meat, not for sport. Despite your establishing your hunter "bona-fides", the above quote of yours was still a dumb thing to say. I understand your distinction and I would personally key the car of any guy I know that killed a deer and left the meat to rot or be scavanged, or just took the head for a trophy. But reducing it all down to "it's just about obtaining the meat" is unfortunate in communicating the sport of hunting to non-hunters. Its pretty expensive meat if you look at it that way, and ignores 95% of the rest of the pleasure of hunting. And ignores certain varmints like coyotes that no one eats, but are a challenging hunt and a necessary hunt out West to reduce their numbers. It's a fine day in Arizona when you nail a few on a glorious day of stalking and hiking around your uncle's ranch.. I suppose we could actually have a decent hunt together, but I do imagine that you would go further in talking to someone that never hunted and explain "its for meat, not for sport" requires further elaboration. Posted by: Cedarford on April 13, 2005 02:51 PM
cedarford, thank you for an intelligent and thoughtful reply. point taken see how nice this makes things? And you're right about varmint hunting, though I've only done that once for gophers outside Albequerque (sp?). That's a "livestock protection" thing, and while I didn't bag any gophers (that I know of with an iron sighted .22LR), I'd still rather not just leave varmints to rot in the fields. Though a 1000 yard shot is a bit far to walk to clean up an underground-rat. So see, we CAN agree on something once in a while. Posted by: hobgoblin on April 13, 2005 03:05 PM
