Another Fusion: The Beatles & Marvin Gaye's Coolest Track, Ever

I was at The Party That Must Not Be Named on Wednesday. (First Rule of the Party That Must Not Be Named: Don't talk about The Party That Must Not Be Named.)

I heard this great "cover" of the Beatles' If You Won't See Me (one of my favorites, of course).

It turned out to not be a cover at all, but rather a fusion re-mix. It's a mix of If You Won't See Me and Marvin Gaye's awsomely-cool Got to Give It Up, called You Won't Give It Up, by a DJ called "Voicedude" aka DJ Joel-Steven.

The mix can be heard and downloaded here.

Thanks to Irwin Chusid of WFMU for supplying the CD to the Party Which Must Not Be Named and identifying the track for me.

"Mash-ups" -- that's apparently what the kids are calling them these days -- for the entire Beatles' album Revolver (again, one of my favorites) can be heard here. Right now I'm trying Got to Get You Into the Mood -- Beatles plus Glenn Miller.

I ain't exactly hard-core. So kill me.

Update: Mixing the Beatles and Glenn Miller is a lot like mixing tequilla and Friendly's Fribbles. Crap.

On the other hand, the Beatles plus The Cure seems to work a little better.

Yes, I'm becoming more of a whiny pussy by the moment, but hey, it's got a cool beat.

And a mash-up of Goldfrapp, Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky, and the Beatles' I Want To Tell You is.... well, it's okay. Alas, it's not as good as any of the other songs it's mashing together.

Mixing The Jam, Beck, and Taxman together is a bit better. Thanks for "Lipstick Dynamite" for suggesting I listen.

Okay, This is Cool: Nancy Sinatra's theme from the James Bond film You Only Live Twice mixed with Tomorrow Never Knows. You younger kids may recognize the You Only Live Twice theme from its sampling on Robbie Williams' Millenium.

Man, I love it when people take my geek obsessions and put them all together into one neat package.

I've listened to that Revolver mash up. Hit and miss, but that Taxman/Beck one is a great song. Sunshine a Go Go pretty good too.

Ray..I'd be careful using that "Lipstick Dynamite" name...you might find yourself drawing the attention of Downtown Lad.

Anyway, I did like the Beatles/Marvin Gaye "mash" (these kids and their groovy hep cat language) but this "Revolved" album, to me, is just an example of the dangers of easy access to studio mixers combined with way too much free time.

Besides, if there isn't any Cthulhu, all the mashin' in the world can't make it rock.

Lyrics:

Beatles/Marvin Gaye
“If You Won’t See Me/Got to Give It Up”
Voicedude

--What have you done in New York, and what do you hope to see while you’re here?
What can I say.
Well, we’ve been out to a couple of clubs, you know; because we just like listening to rock when we’re not working, anyways.
And we hope, I’m hoping some of our favorite artists will come up.
--Who is your favorite artist, American artist?
Well, there’s a lot; you know, Marvin Gaye.

And I played him a little bit of this.
And, uh, I think he liked it.
I think he’s a bit shocked when his, sort of, voice came in, you know.
Is it, it, it is a change, for us, you know, that black kind of voice, so, it is a little bit of, a, you know, culture shock.

When I call you up
Your line’s engaged
I have had enough
So act your age
We have lost the time
That was so hard to find
And I will lose my mind
If you won’t see me
(You won’t see me)
You won’t see me
(You won’t see me)

I don’t know why you
Should want to hide
But I can’t get through
My hands are tied
I won’t want to stay
I don’t have much to say
But I can’t turn away
And you won’t see me
(You won’t see me)
You won’t see me
(You won’t see me)

Time after time
You refuse to even listen
I wouldn't mind
If I knew what I was missing

Though the days are few
They’re filled with tears
And since I lost you
It feels like years
Yes, it seems so long
Girl, since you’ve been gone
And I just can’t go on
If you won’t see me
(You won’t see me)
You won’t see me
(You won’t see me)

[musical interlude]

Time after time
You refuse to even listen
I wouldn’t mind
If I knew what I was missing

Though the days are few
They’re filled with tears
And since I lost you
It feels like years
Yes, it seems so long
Girl, since you’ve been gone
And I just can’t go on
If you won’t see me
(You won’t see me)
You won’t see me
(You won’t see me)
You won’t see me
(You won’t see me)
You won’t see me
You won’t see me

Thanks, but those are just the words to "If You Won't See Me," of course. The only words from Got to Give it Up are "You should be dancin'" in the fade-out.

Here is a good mash up of the Temptations vs Aerosmith called My Girl Walks This Way

Interesting... when you posted that, I had no interest at all. I sort of hate My Girl. But it's surprising how well the two songs lay over each other.

Anyone who knows something about music would probably tell me I'm an idiot, and that the basic structure of songs (especially rock songs) lends itself to just this sort of lay-over pretty easily, but ignorant me, I'm surprised that My Girl and Walk This Way seem to fit so well together.

Goldfrapp. Cool. Need sleep.

Hey gang!

Thanx for all the kind words about two of my Mash Ups. What a nice birthday present it was reading them. You can download or stream "My Girl Walks This Way" directly here:

http://musicbuilder.net/music/bands/1130

...along with a James Taylor / Prince mash.

My two newest ones are here:

http://musicbuilder.net/music/bands/1132/

"It's Alright The Second Time" - The Impressions Vs. Shalamar
"Let's Get It Over" - Marvin Gaye Vs. Crowded House

Interesting story on the quotes I used at the top of the Beatles / Marvin Gaye mash: The Lennon quote is taken from an interview disc from their '65 American tour (I think), but the McCartney quote is actually from a 70's solo project. I used it because he taked about a 'black voice' and all. I loved the fact that Lennon named Marvin Gaye first and foremost.

Do you want to hear more? My online storage site (and that's ALL that it is) for the rest of my Mash-Ups is:

http://f2.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/joel-steven@sbcglobal.net/lst?&.dir=/Mash-Ups+Of+DJ+Joel-Steven&.src=bc&.begin=9999&.view=l&.order=&.done=http%3a//f2.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/joel-steven@sbcglobal.net/lst%3f%26.dir=/Mash-Ups%2bOf%2bDJ%2bJoel-Steven%26.src=bc%26.view=l

Keep checking back into the site from time to time for new ones (they'll always end up at the top). If you have any problems with the site (that confounded SBC!), try again later as it usually sorts itself out. I've also got Halloween and Christmas themed ones located elsewhere.

Thanx again for the support!
Feel free to contact me with any comments.
