De-Linking: A Distasteful But Sometimes Necessary Measure

Fat Kid (who posts a link to a boardgame you definitely wouldn't want to play; it's genuinely offensive) tells me that Michele at ASV is inviting guest bloggers to post about their favorite song-writers.

Michele has pre-emptively ruled out any possibility of a discussion of the enormous gifts and contributions of Mr. Paul Anka.

I don't want to de-link Michele. I really don't. But what choice do I have?

When good men do nothing, evil men are permitted to rule.

On the other hand, doing nothing is a lot easier than doing something. Doing nothing... I don't know. It just "feels right" to me, somehow.

And maybe evil men should be allowed to rule, come to think of it. They generally seem to be highly-motivated and good at organizing.

Ah, the hell with it. I'm a Republican. I pretty much exist to insure that evil men rule.

Fine. Let me hear what you have to say about Paul. Who am I to stand in the way of you and your evil Paul Anka Republican magic?

Ace, I gotta hand it to ya. When you get your back up, you slice like a fuckin' hammer.

Posted by: Cynical Nation on March 24, 2005 03:13 PM

Well Ace, we all know that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

Wise words.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

Michele,

Naaaahhh. "Doing nothing" sounds really good right now.

Just kidding, you know. I talk about Paul Anka enough. I sure don't want to write an essay about him.

Posted by: ace on March 24, 2005 03:14 PM

I know four Paul Anka songs, and "My Way" is two of them, and "She's Having My Baby" is the other two.

Posted by: ace on March 24, 2005 03:15 PM

Ace, will minstrel-themed ephemera ever get beyond the "nazi death's head" status of imago non grata?

B/c there's a certain amount of teh funny there, I just don't know if it was all at the expense of blacks at the time or if this is how blacks in the south amused themselves on occassion. I guess the game is pretty clearly playing to a white, racist audience, but not all such stuff is.

Really, some of the stuff (not this game, really, b/c it's just crude is visually amusing and expresses the interdependence and even love that was created under an oppressive and evil system. Old Southern folks' love of their black "mammy" was real and sweet. I just have trouble figuring out if any of this is acceptable anymore.

So really, this is like the Virgin's question about the logo, only more vague.

Dave,

Funny and true. Is that your own line, or is it from a movie or book?

Posted by: ace on March 24, 2005 03:17 PM

I got your back Ace.

You write up Anka.

Dave @ GR oughta write up Neil Diamond.

Maybe I'll write up Pat Boone.

As I told Michele, no list is complete without them.

Or maybe, I'll hit the Beatallica well once more and do an essay on the effect the Hetfield/McCartney songbook has had on my life.

SO many possibilities....

the words of Dark Helmet, from Spaceballs

he was a true sage

Posted by: johnny on March 24, 2005 03:28 PM

I got Wayne Newton! No blog, though, so I can't do it.

Other Anka songs include "Lonely Boy" and "The Tonight Show Theme".

Dave's line is from Spaceballs, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet. I win the quiz!

Posted by: See-Dubya on March 24, 2005 03:29 PM

I'll offer up Nat King Cole.

And I'll offer up myself, being a somewhat competent dirty songwriter.

Jack: You think I'm worthy?

Posted by: KCTrio on March 24, 2005 03:43 PM

KCTrio,

I think you actually have to have a hit song, or perhaps even a string of them, in order to be considered on the list Michele is making.

So, in this case, whether I think you are worthy of inclusion is pretty meaningless.

But hey, Nat King Cole? As long as you can make him rock as hard as Paul Anka or Pat Boone, I'd say go for it.

Posted by: Jack M. on March 24, 2005 05:38 PM

Well, Jack M:

My post was sort of meaningless, or rather a weak attempt at pawning off my doggerel as actual songwriting.

But let me ask you this: Ever here Orange Colored Sky? That may not rock, but it sure as shit kicks some ass (in a jazzy sort of way).

So, the offer stands; I pretty much am an NKC lickspittle/sycophant/toady/fawning cock worshipper, I'd do a pretty swell job of crafting an homage to my hero.

Posted by: KCTrio on March 24, 2005 06:41 PM

Ace--

One Neil Diamond write-up, per request.

Man, that Michele is one tough cookie to deny the Jewish Elvis his rightful place in the pantheon of rock & roll gods. Or, in this case, Jehovah's.

Cheers,
Dave at Garfield Ridge

After all of this Anka stuff I just remembered. I once defragged his hard drive. About six years ago I was doing freelance IT work and got called over to his office to work on the PCs there.

His manager kept trying to set me up with tickets for a local performance and I kept having to find excuses without saying I couldn't imagine sitting through such a show and remaining conscious.

Posted by: Eric Pobirs on March 25, 2005 01:52 AM

Eric,

Man...I can't believe you turned down the chance to see a living legend in action!

And by "living legend" I mean, of course, frequent Ace commenter "Man of Substance", the greatest lightman Anka ever had.

How do you sleep nights????

Posted by: Jack M. on March 25, 2005 02:00 AM

Soundly.

If there's any problem I put an Anka CD on and soon I'm snoring away.
