One Last Dig At Dan Rather

Click on "Dan's Next Job."

Courage, Dan.

Thanks to RatherBiased.com, who must just be drooling to hear Dan Rather say the words that will make the Rathergate-Watergate correspondence almost perfect:

You won't have Dan Rather to kick around anymore.

And... Meet the New Dan, same as the Old Dan. He began his career as someone only passingly interested in honest reporting:

Rather went on the air with a local Methodist minister who made a stunning claim: Children at Dallas's University Park Elementary School had cheered when told of [President Kennedy's] death.

The tale was perfect for the moment, reinforcing the notion among distant media elites that Dallas was a reactionary "City of Hate." ... Finally, for the ambitious Rather--a native Texan and then a Dallas resident--the account represented the very sort of revealing, local dirt that the throngs of out-of-town competitors would have to work far harder to get.

Except that it wasn't true, and Rather knew it, Barker says.

Approached earlier by the same minister with what was a second-hand account, Barker himself had run the story by the school's principal and some teachers, all of whom denied it outright. Because of the shooting, which took place at 12:30 p.m., the principal had decided to close the school early, though without telling the students why. The children at the school--including three of Barker's own--were merely happy to be going home early, he was told. There couldn't have been any spontaneous cheering at the news of Kennedy's murder, because no such news had been announced.

Undaunted, the dogged minister--"a very, very strong liberal and a very, very strong Kennedy supporter," Barker says--moved on to Rather.

"Rather came to me, and I said, 'My kids are in school there, and I checked it out, and there's not a darn thing to it,'" says Barker. "He said, 'Well, great--I'll just forget it.' But instead of forgetting it, he went out and did this gut job on Dallas and its conservatism," with the preacher's story at the center of his report.

Nixon didn't say that during Watergate. He said it after losing the 1962 Caliornia Gubernatorial race.

Ahh, yes!

That's where it all started... "Fake, but accurate!"

Funny how at that time they considered JFK a liberal and now he may be a conservative. He did cut taxes, try to confront communism (although not real effectively) and did authorize numerous wiretaps. When one looks back he can see how far left on the political scale both parties have swung. JFK and W would be pretty close on the scale in a lot of areas.

Ol'BC, I don't think JFK was actually considered the liberal in that race. Humphrey was the civil rights hero, Johnson the southern populist, and Stevenson the classy intellectual. Kennedy's big issue was a promise to beef up defense spending and close the (nonexistent) "missile gap" with the Soviet Union. And he appointed an Attorney General whose previous experience had been working as an aide to Joe McCarthy. The notion of "liberal Kennedy" is one of those self-serving liberal myths that doesn't hold up to close examination.

ACE - WE should all thank God for blogging, it would be much harder for the MSM to get away that kind of shit today!

I was in the 8th grade when Hinkley shot Reagan. I learned about the shooting because some kid when running down the hall at school cheering "Reagan was just shot."

When I got how, and relayed that story to my family, my mom told me the "kids cheered Kennedy getting shot" story.

Thanks for the link to the story.

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
