The New Carnival of the Vanities Is Up

I've never linked to this, but I do so now since friend-of-the-site Pundit Guy is hosting this week. It's a big link-fest of some of the most interesting stories in the blogosphere.

I especially liked this bit from Libertarian leanings, noting how the press has gone from a "Hang 'em high" attitude regarding the Plame affair when they assumed it would be Bush officials going to jail...

... to a now more-nuanced stance that two reporters might be imprisoned. A reporter now writes:

As most everyone knows, Valerie Plame was outed as a spy in contravention of an obscure, misguided and highly controversial 1982 law meant to stop that sort of thing even at the risk of criminalizing free speech...

Well! I wish I had known that the law was "obscure, misguided and highly controversial" back when it was being used as a bludgeon against the Bush Administration!

Now, lemme see if I get this right. Someone leaked Plame's name to the media. The media printed Plame's name. The media then raised a stink about whether it was legal for the leaker to leak the name, accusing the Bush administration of all sorts of treachery.

Then, the media demands an investigation into the leak and identification of who did the leaking. So, when the administration investigates the leak and demands the media disclose their sources, they refuse and are shocked, shocked to find themselves on the wrong end of the stick.

Of course, they could have avoided this all along by telling their readers who told them who leaked Plame's name to them. Idiots. What did they think would happen? That some Bush administration fellow would suddenly step forward and say, "It was me who told you who Plame was, I'm sorry and I'm resigning."

I'm taking a sabbatical from rightous indignation for awhile, the Liberal Evil Empire is getting to me again. Sometimes I just have to ignore it all.

William, astute analysis.

Press: "Disclose the leak!"

Administration: "Uh, no one here wants to volunteer for federal PMIA prison. He/she leaked to you, you tell us."

Press; "We CAN'T tell YOU!"

Administration: "OH. OK. Case closed."

Press: "It's a COVER-UP!"

What is the UK Regime's plan for protecting the citizens from the savage criminals they've foisted on the populace? They offer NONE. They do, however, have a plan for protecting the savage criminals from the citizens: The citizens must STAY CALM and not get angry and not share videos of citizens being attacked by savage criminals.
The public keeps saying "protect us from the foreign savages you have imported against our wishes and over our objections" and the UK branch of The Regime keeps proposing plans to protect the foreign savages from the public. Soclose to what the public is demanding, just, you know, the complete opposite.
Just a thought: Maybe you wouldn't have to worry about the public attacking the savage criminals if you actually introduced a plan to protect the public from the savage criminals. Maybe they wouldn't feel as if it was necessary for them to protect the public through self-help.
