Another Superb Rip On that CJR "Bloggergate" PieceI found this particularly interesting: Pein tries to argue that the mainstream media talked to various friends and associates of President Bush after the CBS scandal broke, and identified them as such, but somehow did not sufficiently portray them as "right wing," etc. For example: Liberal reporters believe passionately in disclosing all possible credibility-eroding partisan biases of Republican sources. As for liberal sources-- well, they're content to identify them only by their job-- "Havard law professor," "budgetary expert," etc. And as for themselves-- no disclosure about their own leanings. Why is this? One would think that if the public were served by disclosing the possible biases and agendas of sources, that rule should extend to practically everyone, including liberals' favorite liberal go-to sources, and of course to liberal reporters themselves. If the public would be served, as Corey Pein maintains, by examining Joe Allbaugh's partisan leanings, why would it not equally be served by disclosing his own partisan leanings? And of course he does have them. The Wardrobe Door does a small amount of checking and finds that Pein doesn't pass the same test of maximum disclosure he's advocated for Joe Allbaugh: So what about Pein himself? Where do you think his politics fall? Well it turns out he was an editorial intern for the liberal magazine The American Prospect [an avowedly liberal advocacy magazine; the blogger quotes the mag's mission statement as evidence for its admitted liberal activism-- ed.] Now, were these "shadowy links" of Pein's disclosed in his piece? By the Way: Sorry for late start on blogging. The Mu.Nu posting site was down for a bit, and then the actual site was briefly down as well.] Update: Blaster notes: [Quoting from the Pein hackery:] It classifies Burkett as a member of the “loony left,” based on his Web posts. In these, Burkett says corporations will strip Iraq, obliquely compares Bush to Napoleon and “Adolf,” and calls for the defense of constitutional principles. These supposedly damning rants, alluded to in USA Today, The Washington Post, and elsewhere, are not really any loonier than an essay in Harper’s or a conversation at a Democratic party gathering during the campaign. Corey Pein just doesn't see it that way, Blaster. Michael Wolff, a confirmed idiot, has already been quite clear on the liberal position on Rathergate: We all know it's true, so who cares if we have evidence for it? He's stated this nearly explicitly. When a veteran journalist informed him, patiently, that journalism wasn't about what "we all know" but what we can actually verify, Wolff pooh-poohed him as if he were calling some ticky-tack holding call. Which would seem to be Andrew Sullivan's position on Susan Sontag's assumed homosexuality-- We all know she was a lesbian. Since we all know it, can't we dispense with confirmation or authoriatative citation and the like? Look, we know it. Shouldn't that be enough? Alas, no. It shouldn't be enough. Partisans -- particularly liberal partisans posing as reporters -- "know" an awful lot of things that they either cannot prove or are flat-out provably false. Hey, look, gun to my head-- sure, I'm thinking that Sontag was a lesbian. I think most rumors are true. But just because I think that most rumors are true doesn't mean I think the press should be permitted to traffic in them, citing them as genuine, just because four out of five liberals agree that they're true. posted by Ace at 02:40 PM
CommentsOne of the most fun things, for me at least, was watching people twist themselves into pretzels trying to argue that these obviously forged memos either 1) weren't forgeries, 2) may be forgeries but were generally true anyway, or 3) may as well be considered true since no one could "prove" beyond all shadows of doubt that they were forgeries, as if that was some new burden of proof (since no one has ever shown me definitive proof that John Kerry has not had sex with a monkey, I'm going to assume he has). Get over it: the documents were fake and Bush's guard service , while maybe not perfect, was largely free of any serious wrong-doing. Posted by: Jason on January 5, 2005 04:02 PM
Wow, my first link! Thanks Ace! I hope the on-coming Acelanche doesn't destroy my poor little blogger site. You have, as always, gleaned the need to know out of an issue and the blogsphere's thoughts and provided an Andrew Sullivan smackdown into one neat little post. Congratulations, I stand in awe of your "Vikingnese" and your hammer slicing ability! Posted by: Aaron Earls on January 5, 2005 04:33 PM
Disagree. Sontag, for better and worse, was regarded by the NYTimes, secular Jews, and campus intelligensia as a leading commentator on culture, and Jewish life. One of the most important feminist theoreticians and leaders. A woman of towering intellect. Perhaps her obituary best avoids a note on her conversion to lesbianism....but any biography or biographical article would be remiss in not discussing her journey into feminism and the role feminism played in her going lez...or vice versa... Tomorrow is March 25th, "Tolkien Reading Day," because March 25th is the day when the Ring is destroyed in the book. I think I'm going to start the Hobbit tomorrow and read all four books this time.
The only bad part of the trilogy are the Frodo/Sam chapters in The Two Towers. They're repetitive, slow, and mostly about the weather and terrain. But most everything else is good. Weirdly, the Frodo-Sam chapters in Return of the King are exciting and action-packed and among the best in the trilogy. (Though the chapters with everyone else in Return of the King get pretty slow again. Mostly people talking about marching towards war, and then marching towards war.)

US decimation of Iran's ICBM forces is due to Space Force's instant detection of launches -- and the launchers' hiding places -- and rapid counter-attack via missiles
AI is doing a lot of the work in analyzing images to find the exact hiding place of the launchers. Counter-strikes are now coming in four hours after a launch, whereas previously it might have taken days for humans to go over the imagery and data.

Update: Reports say The Warthog has been deployed against men
Thanks to fd. Yeah, thanks a bunch, Chief.
Reports: The A-10 Thunderbolt, better known as The Warthog, has been unleashed on Iran
It's a heavily armored (the pilot sits in a titanim bathtub) slow-and-low loitering plane with a massive minigun firing depleted uranium rounds. The capability it brings is the ability to just fly big circles over the country waiting for a target to present itself. This is a weapons platform for eliminating vehicles and personnel. Its first task might be strafing the seas, clearing out any remaining attack boats and minelayers.
Update: My ballpark estimate for a reasonable cost for a wildlife overpass (suitably padded to sate the thirst of Democrat grifters) was $15 million. Turns out, that was a good estimate. That's how much it cost Denver to build one.
