It's Only Politics, GuysTerrible, terrible story of man so despondant over the re-election of George W. Bush that he committed suicide-- at Ground Zero. There's been savage partisanship -- and real partisan insanity -- starting around 1996 or so. I can't claim I wasn't a part of that. I grew to believe Clinton was a pretty sleazy character sometime around 1996, and then I grew to hate him the thirtieth time he and his minions lied about Monica Lewinsky and trashed the reputations of any man telling the truth. Hate's a strong emotion, and not generally a productive one. It can be productive -- there's no acceptable response to Al Qaeda savagery except hatred directed by intellect. But as to domestic politics-- liberals should bear in mind what I should have borne in mind from 1996-2000: This country is pretty nicely set-up. It takes more than a man you loathe in the Oval Office to destroy it. Clinton set back government integrity, but he did not undo our constitutional republic. And, liberals, neither will George Bush, even if all the fairly nutty things you believe about him are actually true. There's no need to flee to Canada, no need to stock canned food and water in your basement for the time when Bush declares a fascist theorcacy. And, Paul Krugman-- no reason to fear that Bush is going to cancel elections and rule this country as the head of a military/oil-industry junta. Bush thought he was losing, as most of us did, from 1pm to 8pm on November 2nd. I don't remember hearing tanks rolling through Manhattan, and if they rolled in the streets of DC, I think I'd've heard something about it. Relax. It's only politics. Your lives go on. Just as it really makes little concrete difference in your life whether or not your home team wins the championship, so too does it make very little difference who, in particular, is running the country. At the margins? Sure. Different policies from those you might prefer? To some extent, yes. The death of freedom and the creation of a theocratic tyranny under Emperor George W. Bush, El Jefe Maximo por vida? Ummm... not so much. It didn't happen under Clinton, though a lot of otherwise lucid Americans thought it might. And it won't happen under Bush. You have lives, and presumably there is more to your lives than passion about which particular incompetent/criminal/huckster/liar/chimp is running the executive branch at any moment. Concentrate more on the former. Just a friendly word of honest, non-sarcastic advice. I've been there. It wasn't pleasant and it didn't do me much good in the end. Plus, you know, there's always another election four years away. And when you finally win -- as, alas, you probably will -- it's all the sweeter for the waiting. Thanks to Michael Williams/Master of None. posted by Ace at 06:36 AM
CommentsOhh Ace you are such a compassionate conservative. Posted by: KimR on November 7, 2004 08:17 AM
Hate to act as a spellchecker, but it's "vida" not "viva". Posted by: madne0 on November 7, 2004 08:43 AM
I rarely disagree with you Ace, but personally I don't feel in any position to tell the Left to calm down, it's only politics. I looked at this election as a decision between standing and fighting versus chickening out like Spain. If the majority of my countrymen had chosen to be Spain I was ready to turn my back on national politics and just worry about my state. Had Kerry won, listening to the Left tell me it's all just politics, let's come together, etc. would have just been salt in the wound. I can't chastise the Left for their anger, as mine would have been at least as great. Posted by: JeffK on November 7, 2004 09:04 AM
Consider the source. Newsday is a vile partisan rag that makes the New York Times look like the Federalist. Posted by: Sailor Kenshin on November 7, 2004 09:19 AM
I don't want to be non-compassionate, but I saw this story last night and even then I thought they must have left out a few obvious facts. This guy was obviously suffering from serious long term depression, not just depression over the election. Rational people don't commit suicide when faced with four more years of Clinton or Bush, even if they feel depressed afterwards. It'slikely the election results heightened his anxiety and depression, but that's because it was already a pronounced state. And he should have been receiving treatment. Just like any other illness. If we could survive: A James Buchanan who stood by in December 1860 while southerners took over federal installations and federal property without doing anything... U.S. Grant, whose administration, by ANY yardstick, really WAS the most corrupt in history... Calvin Coolidge who'se response to the stock market crash in 1929 was to raise tarriffs on imports, thus making a bad situation worse... FDR who tried to pack the Supreme Court by supporting legislation to expand the Court's numbers to 13, thus overcoming conservative judges who put the breaks on some of his more radical New Deal programs... Richard Nixon...(nuff said)... Jimmy Carter...(more than nuff said)... The point is exactly what Ace has posted...our Constitution was set up to survice just about anything. Posted by: superhawk on November 7, 2004 09:30 AM
Had Kerry won my anger and despair would have been intense also. I would have said, no more mister nice guy. My perception is that too many on the conservative side won't go down to the anything goes level even though it is obvious that the other side has. They didn't win this time, but they're still playing anything goes politics. Bush and Rove play smashmouth better than them and in their minds that justifies all the fake but accurate dirty tricks. They politicized the war on terror and put winning that war at risk. They did everything they could to choke off and lie about the economic recovery. They are willing to make things worse to gain power. That's a line the right won't let itself cross (so far). My impression is that most of the left believes the right crossed that line long ago. Even though Nixon conceeded a close election despite evidence of voter fraud and later resigned rather than put the country through impeachment, he is still portrayed as deliberately trying to destroy the constitution. They are over that line and until they go back there's no sympathy or reaching out from here. I don't believe the constitution would survive both sides playing anything goes so I demand they get back in line! Posted by: Boris on November 7, 2004 09:41 AM
I know, its only politics, but I like it like it yes I do. I said I like it. Let's be honest. Posted by: senator philabuster on November 7, 2004 09:56 AM
The best line in the article comes from an interviewed Democrat: Posted by: Josh Martin on November 7, 2004 10:13 AM
Superhawk - The Constitution is a nice, wise, even visionary document, but not perfect. Otherwise, we would not have to have fought a civil war or had to enact over 30 Amendments to patch it up. It's a piece of the core of America, but not THE CORE. People that venerate one collection of writings and claim it is perfect, like the Qu'ran, the Bible, or the US Constitution - need to pop their heads up and see what else is out there. Nor were the Founding Fathers omnipotent - the Constitution followed their failure to make the Articles of Confederation work. ACE - If Democratic masses want to move to Canada, more power to them! But they will find that Canada doesn't want slackers or mootches coming in unless they happen to be Muslim refugees. I can see the immigration interview: Canadian official: So, tell us a little about yourself, Mr. errr...Jowowski...You seek to come North, eh? Mr. Jowowski, also known as "Juice" to his friends: "It's simple. I don't want to live in a fascist state under the Bush-Hitler." Official: What about Canada's higher tax rate? Does that bother you? "No, that's all cool. I've never paid taxes in my life. Why should it bother me?" Official: Well, that seems a perfect beginning to tell me what you do for a living? Jowowski: "A little of this and that. Whatever it takes, man. Store clerk, pay guitar for spare change, a little house-painting if the weather is nice or I'm not working on grad classes or protesting. Enough money for pizza, beer, and more piercings. I have 13 you know, 6 on my face and the other 7....." Official: Well, that's interesting! I see we have all your paperwork done and Her Majesty's... Jowowski: "You have a Queen up there? What's her name?" Official, slightly brusque: Not really, but as I was saying, we have all the pertinent information on your application and the counselate will notify you sometime in 2005 or early 2006 of our decision. Now you have a nice day, Mr. Jowowski!

These days they don't actually spit on returning soldiers or call them baby-killers, (ok Mike Moore does), but their rhetoric this cycle gave the Islamofacists the idea that we were beaten and ready to quit...encouraging them to hold out and fight harder until Kerry won the election. They would rather see us fail in the Middle East than have GWB re-elected. The Democratic party is defined by their kook fringe. Ronald Reagan was twice the conservative that GWB is, but had to deal with half the vitriol. They are a very dangerous group...things have changed. Posted by: Blacknimbus on November 7, 2004 10:24 AM
How long before Mikey the Hutt blames the President for this poor soul's death? Posted by: zetetic on November 7, 2004 10:32 AM
Superhawk - I think you are a little mixed up on your presidents. Hoover was president during the 1929 crash. He took office in January that year after the 1928 election. Coolidge was only president until inuaguration day. Most corrupt administration is usually applied to Warren G. Harding (He of Teapot Dome). But your point stands. And don't forget Woodrow Wilson, who ran for re-election on an anti-war platform, flip-flopped, then, at the culmination of the negotiations after WWI, became secretly incapacitated and letting his wife run the presidency! Not to mention his League of Nations idea that still plagues us in another form today. Posted by: Axolotl on November 7, 2004 10:46 AM
I am glad we have the FBI setup to catch terrorists. The left's hate will only get worse. We will see organized assignations, bombings and valdalism. If there were any grownups in the Democrat Party, they would be calling for the end of hate and violence now. Posted by: Jake on November 7, 2004 10:51 AM
Exactly, Jake. This was a waste. This poor bastard bought so deeply into the Adolf "Chimpy" AntiChrist message that he felt this was his only way out. It is terrible, but maybe the rational members of the opposition will stop saying that the President of the United States is going to ressurrect the Nazi totalitarian state. I mean, I am all for a spirited debate of the issues, but that sort of talk doesn't contribute anything except high emotions and eventually violence. Posted by: on November 7, 2004 11:03 AM
Sorry, forgot to sign that one. Posted by: Alex on November 7, 2004 11:03 AM
Josh Martin: that was the line that jumped out at me as well. I take it he would have preferred a military coup that installed John Kerry? Posted by: Joe R. the Unabrewer on November 7, 2004 12:07 PM
Two points of constitutional nitpickery: Cedarford: The Constitution is a nice, wise, even visionary document, but not perfect. Otherwise, we would not have ... had to enact over 30 Amendments to patch it up. Since "over 30" means "at least 31," what are the four they passed without me noticing? The 27th Amendment, preventing Congressional pay raises from becoming effective until after an intervening election, was finally ratified in 1992 after lying dormant for more than 200 years. It's the last one I'm aware of. Axolotl: Hoover was president during the 1929 crash. He took office in January that year after the 1928 election. No, he took office in March. Inauguration Day was moved up to January by the Twentieth Amendment in 1933. Posted by: Dave J on November 7, 2004 12:31 PM
Joe - I wouldn't go that far. I just think he's an idiot. Posted by: Josh Martin on November 7, 2004 12:45 PM
Wanna see a true "compassionate conservative"? I've got a brief analysis of this situation up... Posted by: fat kid on November 7, 2004 03:18 PM
Talk about putting your money where your mouth is.... Posted by: Joe Mama on November 8, 2004 12:06 PM
I am sorry to hear of the death of anyone, "for if a clod of earth falls into the sea, England is the less ..." Cumbaya! But they politicized the war on terror and put winning that war at risk. And we can NOT afford to allow them to destroy our will to resist The Islamic Threat to Western Civilization, for we shall need every bit of it to hold back their Barbarian Hordes that are gathering at our gates. Therefore: who cares what happens to people like that? Posted by: 72VIRGINS on November 8, 2004 12:27 PM

If I understand this, the left-wing Democrat assassin attempted to get into the White House Correspondents Association dinner, and was stopped at the magnetometers, which detected his gun. I guess he pulled out the gun and was shot by Secret Service agents. Erika Kirk was present.
