Breaking: Chief Justice Rehnquist at Bethesda for Cancer Treatment

Drudge has a slug. Jen says his condition is "serious," and she's trustworthy, so she must have heard that on tv or the radio.

BREAKING: Underwent surgery-- a tracheotomy.

Pray for the man's life. The article says that he'll be on the bench when the Court resumes its work next Monday, but it sounds to me like he's likely to retire.

I question the timing of this cancer.

Posted by: blaster on October 25, 2004 12:24 PM

He had cancer removed from his neck. Thyroid/Trachea and is expected to be fine. However he is 80 and surgery on an 80 year old is never easy. If he comes off the ventilator easily it will be ok. But that is usually the danger. Putting them to sleep. The SCOTUS is saying he will be back to work Nov 11. i think that is generous. But it isn't like they are going to say anything else.

Bush needs to win so this gentleman can retire and live the rest of his life at leisure.

Everyone needs to vote.

Posted by: Jennifer on October 25, 2004 12:25 PM

Jennifer nails it: We must vote! Also with whatever time remains, persuade undecideds and make plans to help friends and neighbors get to the polls next Tuesday. If the thought of Kerry appointing Bill and/or Hillary to the Supreme Court doesn't motivate you, nothing will.

Posted by: The Old Coot on October 25, 2004 01:00 PM

Whoever wins gets to make 3-4 SCOTUS appointments.

If Kerry wins but the Republicans control the Senate, I can easily see him giving Hillary a seat on the Court, along with 3 Ginsburg clones - and Bubba being his designated foreign policy Statesman and diplomat extraordinaire. Bubba blew his own SCOTUS seat by lying under oath.

Bush wins? He will ineptly appoint one Souter, one O'Connor, and two conservatives. But he's better than Kerry!

Think of it as Ford vs. Carter. Ford was a subpar President, but people voted for Carter and change, and got a worse President.

Go to the polls thinking...."Bush may not be that good, but Kerry would be awful".

ABC says he's expected to be back at work by Monday.

I just told a liberal friend of mine the news, and was rather surprised to see the look of unrestrained glee on his face.

Posted by: Sobek on October 25, 2004 01:57 PM

Cedarford,

Hope you're joking... Hillary has about the same chance of getting on the Supreme Court as I do right about now. The most she could hope for (and this is a big maybe) is a federal district court judgeship.

Not that she'd ever want it, anyway. She's got her hopes pinned on electoral ascendency.

Posted by: Russell Wardlow on October 25, 2004 02:04 PM

He's a tough old guy. He'll be back on the bench in no time.

Posted by: Scout on October 25, 2004 02:18 PM

Russell -

You neglect a long tradition of appointing Justices who have NOT toiled in lesser courts - but come right out of high political office or academia.

And Hillary just wants to change the country. Why go through the hassle and uncertainty of running for office to effect national changes fitting a liberal agenda? Why should she be busting her copiuous ass fighting all the moderates and conservatives opposing her, with 110+ hour White House workweeks? When you can legislate all you want from the bench, with no risk, instead, Kicking back in complete security and putting bankers hours in.

Besides, as I said, this scenario only plays out if Kerry wins. Hillary can't run in 2008 against an incumbent (Dems agree that Teddy's 1980 run hurt them badly, so never again in the name of Party loyalty)- and since Hill would be in her late 60's assuming her 1st opportunity would be after Kerry's 2nd term - in 2012.

Posted by: Cedarford on October 25, 2004 03:13 PM

If Kerry wins, get ready for Chief Justice Hillary Rodham Clinton!

Posted by: Greg Schreiber on October 25, 2004 05:00 PM

The moonbats are already saying it's a put-up job to scare conservatives into the voting booths

Tomorrow is March 25th, "Tolkien Reading Day," because March 25th is the day when the Ring is destroyed in the book. I think I'm going to start the Hobbit tomorrow and read all four books this time.
The only bad part of the trilogy are the Frodo/Sam chapters in The Two Towers. They're repetitive, slow, and mostly about the weather and terrain. But most everything else is good. Weirdly, the Frodo-Sam chapters in Return of the King are exciting and action-packed and among the best in the trilogy. (Though the chapters with everyone else in Return of the King get pretty slow again. Mostly people talking about marching towards war, and then marching towards war.)

[A]n asshole is somebody who looks at a painting of two toddlers doing something totally normal for toddlers and decides that it represents homosexuality and then thinks that publicly saying that is somehow edgy and clever. Instead it is doing what we accuse the Left of, that is sexualizing young children. If that describes you, own it.

Reports: The A-10 Thunderbolt, better known as The Warthog, has been unleashed on Iran
It's a heavily armored (the pilot sits in a titanim bathtub) slow-and-low loitering plane with a massive minigun firing depleted uranium rounds. The capability it brings is the ability to just fly big circles over the country waiting for a target to present itself. This is a weapons platform for eliminating vehicles and personnel. Its first task might be strafing the seas, clearing out any remaining attack boats and minelayers.
Update: My ballpark estimate for a reasonable cost for a wildlife overpass (suitably padded to sate the thirst of Democrat grifters) was $15 million. Turns out, that was a good estimate. That's how much it cost Denver to build one.
