Quake Rocks SoCal

A magnitude of 6.0.

I'm mentioning this just in order to explain why I didn't mention this before -- or, for that matter, why I don't cover obviously important stories.

For one thing, I assume that, for most, Ace of Spades HQ remains a second or third stop at best on the information superhighway. I don't bother linking stories that I assume everyone knows about from normal LLM channels or other, bigger blogs (like Instapundit).

For another thing, I usually don't link stories I have nothing to contribute to. The slaughter in Darfur is horrific; and of course I hope for a minimum of destruction and deaths due to this earthquake. As I similarly hoped for Florida and the Gulf Coast during this savage storm season.

But I think that's pretty obvious. True, sometimes the obvious just needs to be said anyway. But I try to keep in mind that this is a political/comedy blog, and not really a one-stop source for links on breaking news.

At any rate, my best wishes to California readers and their families -- and all Californians, of course -- during this tremulous time.

Ace--

Humorous earthquake story, 100% true, happened this afternoon.

My brother just took a job out in Sunnyvale and has lived out there for a few weeks now. When news of the quake hit Drudge, I sent him an email asking him if he felt the quake:

----
"The REALLY weird thing is that I was in a meeting with a bunch of people who handle all of [his company's] payment processing. One of their team members was going through their major project list for 2005, and one of them was to upgrade our capacity for redundancy, “just in case of earthquake, fires, et cetera”. I swear, the MOMENT the word “earthquake” left her mouth, the room started shaking.

As soon as the room stopped shaking I immediately turned to her and said

“That was COOL!... Say ‘hurricane’! Come on… say ‘hurricane’!”"
----

I've been in a few dingers myself, having lived in L.A. for a while.

Ace, I dunno if you've ever had the, ah, pleasure of being in one, but even if you've never been in one before, you can instantly tell it's a quake (and not a truck passing by, or something similar). It's that alien of an experience to feel everything-- the floor, the walls, the *air* begin to shimmy.

My favorite quakes are still the ones I felt in *Chicago* back in grade school, and here in Virginia just last year (felt while up in my 13th floor office). You just don't expect quakes to happen there, but the moment they happened, I instantly knew it was a quake.

Kinda fun, actually, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody or break anything.

Cheers,
Dave

You're the first stop for me:

Alphabetical. Order.

6.0? That was nothing. I slept through the Northridge earthquake. No big deal.

Darn. I thought you were organizing an Ace-of-Spades LAN party. I could really use 50 straight hours of gaming right now...
